  • This paper presents a fault detection and data processing algorithm for acoustic sensor systems using the multiple sensor algorithm that has originally developed for the wireless sensor nodes. The multiple sensor algorithm can increase the reliability of the sensor systems by utilizing and comparing the measurements of the multiple sensors. In the acoustic sensor system, the equivalent sound level($L_{eq}$) is used to detect the faulty sensor. The experiment was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the multiple acoustic sensor algorithm, and the results show that the algorithm can detect the faulty sensor and validate the data.

  • In shooting training, an impact point identification system that uses the impact wave of the bullet to check the impact point in the target plate has been recently used. Acoustic sensors used in these systems must be able to detect shock waves of high sound pressure levels and be both waterproof and dustproof for rainy weather and dusty environments, respectively. In this study, membranes with excellent waterproof, dustproof, and sound transmitting characteristics were selected through a characteristics test; a protection cap was installed to install the selected materials. After coupling the produced protection cap to the acoustic sensor housing, the sensitivity and phase characteristics of the acoustic sensor were checked. Through the waterproof and dustproof test, the performances of its sensitivity and phase characteristics were confirmed. Finally, the normal shockwave of a 5.56 mm diameter bullet was measured using a shockwave detection signal collecting plate equipped with a prototype of the acoustic sensor at a 100 m firing range.

  • Acoustic signal is emitted from a vessel and received by a cylindrical array sensor at some distance from the vessel. Acoustic signal is the source for a cylindrical array sensor which is designed to detect the acoustic signal. Cylindrical array sensors seldom have an ideal hydrodynamic shape and are not sufficiently robust to survive without some protection and they are normally housed in a sonar dome. Reflected signals by some structure inside a sonar dome make unwanted signals. Therefore, an acoustic baffle is used to minimize unwanted signals. The performance of the acoustic baffles can be determined from the acoustic numerical analysis at the design stage. In this study, finite element method was used to analyze the acoustic field around the cylindrical array sensor and baffle effects. The baffle performance can be defined the echo reduction. To show the baffle performance, the specimens were made for pulse tube test and echo reductions were measured during the test. In this paper, the effect of echo reduction of the acoustic baffle was discussed.

  • In this paper, the results of underwater vibration experiment are analyzed to verify platform vibration-induced noise isolation characteristics of a hull-mounted acoustic sensor. The experimental condition causing platform vibration-induced noise is generated using the mock-up hull, where the acoustic sensor is installed, with shaker in an acoustic water tank. The performance indices of ATF (Acceleration Transfer Function), AVS (Acceleration Voltage Sensitivity), and IL (Insertion Loss) for the acoustic sensor are calculated from the output of the standard accelerometers, which are installed on the mock-up hull and the acoustic sensor, and the output signal of the acoustic sensor. The frequency-dependent noise isolation characteristics of the acoustic sensor are analyzed based on the calculated performance indices and an effectiveness of the experiment is examined.

  • A pressure wave created by the photoacoustic effect is affected by the medium and by laser parameters. The effect of these parameters on the generated pressure wave can be seen by solving the photoacoustic wave equation. These solutions which are examined in the time domain and the frequency domain should be considered by researchers in acoustic sensor design. In particular, frequency domain analysis contains significant information for designing the sensor. The most important part of this information is the determination of the operating frequency of the sensor. In this work, the laser parameters to excite the medium, and the acoustic signal parameters created by the medium are analyzed. For the first time, we have obtained solutions for situations which have no frequency domain solutions in the literature. The main focal point in this work is that the frequency domain solutions of the acoustic wave equation are performed and the effects of the frequency analysis of the related parameters are shown comparatively from the viewpoint of using them in acoustic sensor designs.

  • Throughout CGL (Continuous Galvanizing Line) in steel works, zinc-coated steel sheets are produced which are used where long-running corrosion resistivity is required. During the galvanizing process, top dross is created and floated on the zinc pot. Because the dross leaves ill patterns on the coated sheets, a robot system is developed to automatically collect and remove the top dross. It consists of a robot and its carriage system, a pot level sensor, a system controller, and special robot tools. For the first time the level of zinc pot must be measured and fed back to the robot controller to avoid submersion of the robot hand into the hot zinc pot. In this paper, acoustic distance sensor is tested as a candidate for the pot level sensor in the view point of hot environment. Some considerations on the use of the acoustic distance sensor will be denoted.

  • The hybrid acoustic sensor for implantable hearing aid has the structure in which a sound pressure based acoustic sensor (ECM) and a vibration based acceleration sensor are combined. This sensor combines the low frequency sensitivity of an acoustic sensor with the high frequency sensitivity of an acceleration sensor, allowing the acquisition of a wide range of sound from low to high frequency. In this paper, an acceleration sensor for use in a hybrid acoustic sensor has been proposed. The acceleration sensor captures the vibration of the tympanic membrane generated by the acoustic signal. The size of the proposed acceleration sensor was determined to diameter of 3.2 mm considering the anatomical structure of the tympanic membrane and the standard of ECM. In order to make the hybrid acoustic sensor have high sensitivity and wide bandwidth characteristics, the aim of the resonance frequency of the acceleration sensor is to be generated at about 3.5 kHz. The membrane of the acceleration sensor derives geometric structure through mathematical model and finite element analysis. Based on the analysis results, the membrane was implemented through a chemical etching process. In order to verify the frequency characteristics of the implemented membrane, vibration measurement experiment using external force was performed. The experiment results showed mechanical resonance of the membrane occurred at 3.4 kHz. Therefore, it is considered that the proposed acceleration sensor can be utilized for a hybrid acoustic sensor.

  • We have designed and made three kinds of FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) Acoustic Transducer using Hopper type WDM on the use of recently developed FBG in Korea. The newly designed three kinds of FBG Acoustic Transducer using Hopper type WDM have an excellent merit of practical use with simple structure of sensors arm as well as the merit with existing fiber sensors. It was possible to detect sound waves in the range of 10 Hz to 18 kHz through the newly designed three kinds of FBG Acoustic Transducer and also, possible to detect its signal within the maximum range of 8.6 m by the use of most suitable resonance condition of the transducer. Especially, we can expect the utilization of low-frequency signal detection instead of existing acoustic sensor in the environment of electric noise and inferior condition. Furthermore, they can be developed as the high-sensibility and multi-point signal detection system through the sensor array system.

  • Event detection in wireless sensor networks is a key requirement in many applications. Acoustic sensors are one of the most frequently used sensors for event detection in sensor networks, but they are sensitive and difficult to handle because they vary greatly depending on the environment and target characteristics of the sensor field. In this paper, we propose a learning-based improvement of CFAR algorithm for increasing node-level event detection performance in acoustic sensor networks, and verify the effectiveness of the designed algorithm by comparing and evaluating the event detection performance with other algorithms. Our experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm by increasing the detection accuracy by more than 45.16% by significantly reducing false positives by 7.97 times while slightly increasing the false negative compared to the existing algorithm.
