  • In this paper, an efficient contrast enhancement algorithm using histogram specification is proposed. Histogram equalization and its modified methods have been effective techniques for contrast enhancement. However, they often result in excessive contrast enhancement. Besides conventional histogram specification also has a problem to get the desired histogram. We propose a method that utilizes a simple high frequency filter to get the desired histogram. The proposed technique not only produces better visual results than conventional contrast enhancement techniques, but is also adaptively adjusted to the statistical characteristics of the image.

  • In this paper, we present a method to define a color similarity between color images using Octree-based quantization and similar color integration. The proposed method defines major colors from each image using Octree-based quantization. Two color palettes to consist of major colors are compared based on Euclidean distance and similar color bins between palettes are matched. Multiple matched color bins are integrated and major colors are adjusted. Color histogram based on the color palette is constructed for each image and the difference between two histograms is computed by the weighted Euclidean distance between the matched color bins in consideration of the frequency of each bin. As an experiment to validate the usefulness, we discriminated the same clothing from CCD camera images based on the proposed color similarity analysis. We retrieved the same clothing images with the success rate of 88 % using only color analysis without texture analysis.

  • Educators have found that the concept of randomness is often misunderstood by students. Chance recently pointed out that students should be introduced to the concept of randomness through the use of simulations. In this article, we studied various aspects of the probability distribution off linear random path in a circle and introduce some related simulations to guide student exploration and discovery. Consider a random line segment that crosses a circle with a certain radius. Perhaps it can be considered to be a path that an airplane shows up and flies into a random direction in a monitor. What is the expected amount of flying distance through the monitor, and the expected variation\ulcorner Are we monitoring what we see scientifically\ulcorner This article studies the probability distribution and some related aspects of a linear random path within a circular monitor. Some simulative activity is also introduced which can be used in a statistics or probability classes.
