  • The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performance of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. The purpose of this study is to investigate and to model the air-side particulate fouling characteristics of the heat exchangers using accelerated particle loading system. The main variables of the modeling equation are face velocity and dust concentration. The modeling equation shows good agreements with the experimental results at the face velocity of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 m/s and the dust concentration of 1.28 and $3.84\;g/m^3$. It will be very useful to predict fouling characteristics such as variations of pressure drop and heat transfer capacity in finned-tube heat exchangers of air conditioners.

Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. An empirical modeling equation is derived from the experimental results using accelerated tests and it shows good predictions of the fouling characteristics of the slitted finned tube heat exchangers. • The air-side particulate fouling of the HVAC heat exchangers degrades the performance of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fouling characteristics using accelerated particle loading system. The fouling characteristics are analyzed as functions of a dust concentration, a face velocity and a wet or dry surface condition. The pressure drop increases with increasing test operation and reaches constant asymptotic level. For the saturated condition due to particle loading, the pressure drop across the slitted finned-tube heat exchangers at the face velocity of 1 m/sec increases up to 57% and the cooling capacity decreases about 2%. The cooling capacities are not affected greatly by the presence of the fouling deposits if the thickness of the fouling deposits can not change substantially the flow pattern through the fins.

  • The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performance of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fouling characteristics trough accelerated tests. The fouling characteristics are analyzed as functions of a dust concentration (1.28 and 3.84 $g/m^3$), a face velocity (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m/s), and a surface condition. The cooling capacity in the slitted finned-tube heat exchangers at the face velocity of 1 m/s decreases about 2% and the pressure drop increases up to 57%. The rate of build-up of fouling is observed to be 3 times slower for this three-fold reduction of dust concentration whilst still approaching the same asymptotic level.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of air-side fouling and cleaning on the performances of various condenser coils used in unitary air-conditioning systems. A total of six condenser coils with different fin geometry and row number were tested. Performance tests were performed at three different conditions: clean-as-received, after fouling, and after cleaning. In all cases, it was observed that the fouling was mostly confined to the frontal face of the heat exchanger as reported in the previous investigations. The amount of deposited dust was more dependent on fin geometry for the single-row heat exchangers than for the double-row heat exchangers. The predominant effect of fouling was to cause a more significant increase in air-side pressure drop than a degradation in heat transfer performance. For the single-row heat exchangers, the pressure drop increased by 28 to 31%, while the heat transfer performance decreased by 7 to 12% at the standard air face velocity of 1.53 m/s depending on fin shape. For the double-row heat exchangers, the pressure drop increased by 22 to 37%, and heat transfer performance decreased by only 4-5% at the same air face velocity. Once the contaminated coils were cleaned according to the given cleaning procedure the original performance of the heat exchangers could almost be recovered completely. The pressure drop could be restored within 1 to 7% and the heat transfer performance could be recovered to within 1 to 5% of the originally clean heat exchangers. Therefore, it is concluded that a periodic application of the specified cleaning technique will be effective in maintaining the thermal performance of the condenser coils.

Therefore an modified modeling equation is proposed and it shows good predictions of the actual fouling characteristics of finned-tube heat exchangers.

  • Fouling and cleaning tests are performed for a uniquely designed 7,000 ㎉/hr fluidized bed heat exchanger for exhaust gas heat recovery. Fuel rich condition is maintained in the combustor for a limited time period to generate soot that is to be deposited on the heat transfer surfaces (fouling) and 600 Um glass beads are circulated inside the heat exchanger system for cleaning and enhancing the heat transfer performance. According to the present experimental study, performance degradation mode could be monitored and the effect of particle circulation on the heat transfer improvement could be identified. Through the present study, it is demonstrated that circulating particles contribute not only to the fouling reduction in gas side, but also to the heat transfer enhancement of the unit, while other possible aging factors including water side corrosion seemed to contribute to the accumulated performance deterioration.

  • Pressurized membrane used for side-stream MBR process requires fouling control strategy both for normal and abnormal operation conditions for stable operation of the facilities. In this study, $85m^3/day$ of pilot-scale side-stream MBR process was constructed for the evaluation of fouling mitigation by air bubble injection into the membrane module. In addition, fouling phenomena at abnormal operation conditions of low influent and/or loading rate were also investigated. Injection of air bubble was found to be effective in delaying transmembrane pressure (TMP) increase mainly due to scouring effect on the membrane surface, resulting in expanded filtration cycle at a high flux of $40L/m^2{\cdot}h$ (LMH). At abnormal operation condition, injection of PACl (53 mg/L as Al) into the bioreactor showed 19% reduction of TMP increase. However, inhibition of nitrifying bacteria by continuous PACl injection was observed from batch experiments. In contrast, injection of powdered activated carbon (PAC, 0.6 g/L) was able to maintain the initial TMP of $0.2kg/cm^2$ for 5 days at the abnormal conditions. It may have been caused from the adsorption of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which was known to be excessively released during growth inhibition condition and act as the major foulants in MBR operations.
