  • Airframe maintenance is regarded the most important maintenance action in airlines as the aircraft is the most valuable asset in their operation though the volume of airframe maintenance is the last in MRO market. In the selecting process of airframe MRO provider many kinds of evaluation criteria should be considered such as quality, expenses, TAT, capability, and customer support. This paper will suggest the way to select the airframe MRO in airlines and MRO business sectors using AHP.

  • An important trend in the sustainment of military aircraft is the transition from preventative maintenance to condition based maintenance (CBM). For CBM, it is essential that the actual system condition can be measured and the measured condition can be reliably extrapolated to a convenient moment in the future in order to facilitate the planning process while maintaining flight safety. Much research effort is currently being made for the development of technologies that enable CBM, including structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. Great progress has already been made in sensors, sensor networks, data acquisition, models and algorithms, data fusion/mining techniques, etc. However, the transition of these technologies into service is very slow. This is because business cases are difficult to define and the certification of the SHM systems is very challenging. This paper describes a possibility for fielding a SHM system on legacy military aircraft with a minimum amount of certification issues and with a good prospect of a positive return on investment. For appropriate areas in the airframe the application of SHM will reconcile the fail-safety and slow crack growth damage tolerance approaches that can be used for safeguarding the continuing airworthiness of these areas, combining the benefits of both approaches and eliminating the drawbacks.

  • The air transport industry is experiencing unprecedented fluctuations in aviation demand through the Covid-19 pandemic, and is more focused than ever on maintaining and generating business profitability. During the pandemic, demand for air cargo has soared, and the conversion business from passenger aircrafts to freighters(P2F) is drawing attention as a new business in the aviation maintenance industry. This study derives important factors to be considered in order to successfully carry out the P2F project through a wide range of cases and related literature, and analyzes the relative importance of each factor using the analytic hierarchy process. Through a survey of 33 aviation maintenance experts with more than 20 years of field experience, the importance of main factors and their sub factors was determined and implications were drawn. As a primary result, in order to succeed in the P2F project, the main factors were identified in the order of skill, finance, and location. The most important sub factors for each main factors were identified in order of securing airframe modification skill, securing infrastructure construction cost, and creating P2F business complex and district. The quantified success factors suggested the critical direction for the successful development of Korea's P2F business, and presented viable and specific business strategies and implementation plans for each factors.

  • In this paper, we have proposed novel technique to improve maintainability for training vehicle of underwater weapon system. In case of under water weapon, the fire procedure is related with operation of expulsion system in submarines. So the submarine crews should practice the complex fire procedure of weapon system by using training vehicle, which is safer and cheaper than operational weapon. After emitted from submarine, the training vehicle rise to the surface and should be withdrawn from the sea. The recovered training vehicle is transported to maintenance depot and pass through the recycling procedure including disassembling the vehicle, data acquisition & analysis, battery charge, replacing expandable components, testing the captive equipment, and assembling the vehicle. The disassembling & assembling of training vehicle which is composed of watertight section or airframe, is time-consuming work. So in this paper, we have studied the elements of recycling procedure and propose the method to exclude the assembling & disassembling work for maintainability improvement.

  • The effect of symmetric and asymmetric micro regenerative pump impellers on their pressure performance was studied. The shut off head of the pump with the symmetric impeller was about 2.5 times as that with the asymmetric impeller. The computation of the internal flow was performed to clarify the cause of the increase of the head. It was found that the contribution of the angular momentum supply was larger than that of shear stress for the head development in both cases. The larger head and momentum supply in the case of the symmetric impeller were caused by larger recirculated flow rate and larger angular momentum difference between the inlet and outlet to the impeller. The larger recirculated flow rate was caused by smaller pressure gradient in the direction of recirculated flow. The decrease of the circumferential velocity in the casing was attributed to the smaller local flow rate in the casing.

  • FOD(Foreign Object Debris) has the potential threat to damage aircraft during critical phases of take-off and landing roll with some objects including metal on the runway. FOD can be found anywhere on an airport's air operation areas such as runway, taxiway and apron. It can lead to catastrophic loss of life and airframe, and increased maintenance and operating costs. In this paper, we defined FOD and surveyed its riskiness and necessity of automatic FOD detection system. We compared the requirements of the environment in Korea to the FAA advisory circular. Also we analyzed operation methods of FOD detection systems already installed at some airports. Based on the surveys mentioned above, we propose hybrid type of FOD detection system considering the environment in Korea which uses millimeter wave radar, optical camera and thermal imaging camera to detect FOD efficiently. In management approach, fixed type of the system should be installed for real-time monitoring, and mobile type of the system can be used additionally.

  • The paste-type adhesive can be stored for a certain period of time and can be cured at room temperature. So it is mainly used for crack patching repair of aircraft airframe structures. This study analysed the influence of environmental factors and evaluated the adherence strength characteristics according to the adherence delay time of the paste-type adhesive. The test specimens were made of aluminum alloy(AL 2024-T3) with reference to ASTM D1002 which is generally performed to measure the adherence strength of the adhesive used for metal bonding. As a result of analysing the influence of temperature and humidity, it was found that the optimal temperature range is $24.5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and the optimal humidity range is $71{\pm}1%$ for maintenance work of the aircraft using EA-9320 adhesive. In addition, the adherence strength did not decrease with the inherent application time of the EA-9320, but it was found that the adherence strength dropped rapidly when the applied time exceeded the inherent application time of it.

  • The fatigue happening during the road riding of the vehicle and for the moment the aircraft lands on the runway is closely related to the life cycle of the landing gear, the airframe, the vehicle's suspension, etc. The multiple loads acting on the wheel are longitudinal, lateral, vertical, and braking forces. To study the dynamic characteristics and fatigue stiffness of the vehicle, the dynamic fatigue simulator generally has been used to represent the real road vibration in the lab. It can save time and cost. In hardware, the critical factor in the hydraulic fatigue simulator structure is to decouple each axis and to endure several load vibration. In this paper, the inverse kinematic analysis method derives the magnitude of movement of the hydraulic servo actuator by the coupling after rendering the maximum movement displacement in the axial direction at the center of the dummy wheel. The result of the analysis is that the coupling between the axes is weak to reproduce the real road vibrations precisely.
