Since airline safety depends significantly on the role of pilot, the importance of airlines' training qualified pilots and investing in the training program grows. This study aims to analyze the determinants of the commercial airline pilot competencies during the transition course. To this purpose, one-year training evaluation results of 215 new airline pilots in the JET transition course of Company K in 2019 are studied with correlation coefficient analysis, factor analysis, ANOVA, and regression analysis. Undergraduate major and Uljin-trained pilots show higher final-stage scores in PROC, AUTO, and CRM. Due to Uljin-trained pilots' higher first-stage scores, their score increase during the course is limited. Uljin-trained pilots' MANUAL scores in the final stage are lower than those of undergraduate major and overseas-trained pilots. Influence of trained location is found greater than English competency, undergraduate GPA, and ground school scores on commercial airline pilot competency evaluation scores during the program. The results will be useful in establishing scenario-based training focusing on different background to apply competency-based training and assessment.

Due to the recent aircraft accidents both in Ethiopian airline and Malaysian airline, almost all the media are focusing the importance of the airline safety. Especially, media's eyes and ears are interested in the reasons why Malaysia airline's missing presumed as by either terrorist attack or pilot's mistake. Safety Behaviors of pilot are viewed as the most important human factor issues among researchers. This is because, if it were the case of a commercial airline, pilot's safety behavior would be directly related to the lives of couple of hundreds passengers. This paper considers the antecedents of this safety behaviors as pilot's leadership, pilot's leadership and self-efficacy. This paper has tried to find out which human factors of a pilot would have significant impact on their safety behaviors. According to the empirical research result from SEM (Structural Equation Model), it was found out both the leadership and self-efficacy of a pilot had direct impact on their safety behaviors through safety motivation. Thus it could be concluded that flight crew must follow the instruction of a pilot who had the authority of the flight operation. The managerial implication are discussed in the conclusion part of this paper. As an implication, this paper concluded that it would be necessary to do further research on pilot's leadership and self-efficacy.

Recently industries have started to recognize the importance of word-of-mouth marketing and human resource management especially for airline industries who suffer from pilot shortage. Pilots are very important component of airline company and require a lot of money and time to assession, training and maintaining certified license validity. This study is to test the effect of airline pilot's organizational identification, emotional exhaustion and perceived justice on turnover intention and negative word-of-mouth on airline union pilots returned from the strike. This study used both literary method and empirical method. The researcher did literary study based on the previous study, designed the research model and hypothesis, did questionnaire survey to the Union member pilot from year 2005 strike for the subject of study to verify hypothesis and analysed empirically the finding using SPSS12.0 program. The major findings of this study may be summarized as follows, (1) organizational identification has a negative effect on turnover intention and negative word-of-mouth, (2) emotional exhaustion has a positive effect on turnover intention and negative word-of-mouth, (3) perceived justice has a negative effect on turnover intention and negative word-of-mouth.

The commercial pilot retirement age has continued to 65 since the International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO) amended the recommended age limit from 60. The target of this review is to analyse whether aged pilots have an increased age-dependent risk of medical incapacitation. Medical in-flight incapacitation is actually very rare event and the demonstrated annual incapacitation rate provides an acceptable risk within the criteria known as 1% safety rule for a pilot undertaking air transport operations while some controversies exist. There is a possibility that the accident rate has decreased due to the improved skill by increasing pilot's age. At the decision of flight or not for elderly airline pilot the interacting factors of personal health status, piloting experience and new flight environments should be considered to define job limit criteria than mere the age. Results of a survey led by airline pilot association in Korea shows 65% of airline pilots are willing to fly without any age limit and 87% agreed that age limit is worthy to extend beyond current standard on the basis of medical examinations. Only 11% agreed to maintain current age limit.

Due to the rapid growth of domestic and overseas airline markets, the demand for airline pilots has also been growing fast. Meeting such a market needs, central government, Ministry of Land and Transportation has set up civil airline pilot training center at Ulgin airport to train and provide the market with commercial airline pilots. Not only central government but universities in Korea also have tried to train pilots by operating flight training academies. Even though there are more than a dozen of flight training centers including colleges and private academies, there have been less efforts to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the flight training school's curriculums compared to other scholar majors in a university. Therefore this paper tried to evaluate the educational effectiveness of the curriculums using the Kirk-Patrick measurement model, which has been regarded as one of the most popular and accurate measurement tool for an empirical research in social science. According to the empirical research, it was found out the inter-personal relationship between an instructor pilot and flight trainee was perceived as the most important factor to have an impact on learning abilities and student's behaviors.

The pilot's role is absolutely critical to the safety of an airline. It can be predicted that there is a difference in the acquisition of pilot competency required in actual flight at the initial flight training stage. In this study, the progress and effects of education and training for each background are analyzed, and differentiated competency-based training is to be studied. By sampling a sample of civil airline pilots, we are trying to determine whether there is a difference in the results of the regular proficiency check among the eight competencies defined by ICAO according to military and civil backgrounds. Accordingly, an independent t-test was conducted to test the average difference between the two groups, from the military and civilian origin, to confirm the average difference in the piloting competency between the groups. Based on these results, it will be helpful to design future training courses.

This study aimed to quantify the causes of Korean airline pilots' medical disqualification during 2015~2019. The airline pilot disqualification data is important for grasping what health problems are common to pilots and establishing preventive health care programs. We were able to obtain data from official sources at the Korean Civil Aviation Authority during 2015~2019. The total number of pilots was 29,095, and the number of disqualified professional pilots in Korea was 36. Looking at airline pilots' status by age group, the 40s were the highest with 38%. However, the disqualification rate per 1,000 pilots was the highest in the 60s, at 4.6. When the different diagnostic categories classified the disqualification results, cardiovascular disease was the highest with 12 cases (33.3%), followed by eye disease, malignancy, neurology, psychiatry, otorhinolaryngology, and respiratory disease. The total number of pilots during 2015~2019 was 29,095, and the overall disqualification rate of 1.6/1,000 pilots.

At the choice of aviation company, safety appears as biggest variable than expenses, speed and comfort so these are concerned not only aviation companies but also countries and customers. Until now, ICAO has been making effort to reduce the flight accident through the safety advice of aviation part, establishment of standard, education, training and develop of navigation aids. Especially in 2008, they emphasize that the flight accident is reduced through researches and applications about SMS as safety regulation. Important primary factor to give influence about promotion of SMS is practice of organization and for this, to investigate recognition about safety management and culture of members. At point of this, this research analyze the recognition degree about how to manage safety and SMS for pilots an mechanics of Korea.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) reduces airline passengers, which leads to a sharp decline in airline sales. They are concerned about the dismissal or unpaid leave of the flight pilot and crew, and the management of the passengers is also under great stress. Stress management methods for COVID-19 can be divided into general stress management such as 'Let's change me', 'Let's find the source of life', and 'Let's ask for help', and mental health management in a disaster situation.

It is often misled that Multi Pilot License is introduced by International Civil Aviation Organization for the shortage of pilots. The truth is, however, that the license is focused on efficient training of co-pilots in the airline transportation system which an autopilot system is increasing in the Multi Crew environment. ICAO has been researching on the license since 1982, and made it international standard on 2006. Currently, co-pilots trained under Multi-Crew Pilot License courses are continuously increasing over the world. Although the license has introduced to Korea in September 10, 2009, it has not won popular support yet. This paper will lead people to precise understanding of Multi-Crew Pilot License and suggest its introduction plan.
