  • This paper is concerned with forming of Al-Zn-Mg-Sc aluminum alloy bolts, focusing on the effects of heat treatment and age-hardening on the formability and ductile damage evolution. Both experimental and finite element studies were performed. From the experiments, it is observed that the heat treatment or the normalization of Al-Zn-Mg-Sc aluminum alloy increases its formability dramatically resulting in successful bolt forming, while the effects of age-hardening at room temperature on the stress-strain relationship and formability are not very critical. Deformation characteristics such as distribution of effective stress and strain, material flow, and ductile damage evolution during bolt forming are examined using a commercial finite element package, Deform-2D. It should be noted that the extrusion load predicted by the finite element method matches well the experiment results. The finite element predictions on the deformation characteristics support the experimental observations such as fracture of bolt head flange, material flow, and distribution of hardness.

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been widely used for aerospace and power generation applications because of low density and attractive mechanical and corrosion resistant properties. However, the titanium alloy bolt is generally manufactured by cutting and rolling because of their poor workability. In order to achieve the mass production of titanium alloy bolts, it needs to be solved some manufacturing problems such as the sticking between workpiece and dies, the formation of the forming defects during the forging and so on. In this study, the manufacturing technology of titanium alloy bolts using warm forging process was introduced. The aim of present work is to develop a warm forging technology for high strength Ti-6Al-4V bolts.

  • Since fastener bolt for airplane require high specific strength and corrosion resistance, Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used. However, the Ti-6Al-4V bolt is generally manufactured by cutting and rolling because of their poor workability. The aim of present work is to develop hot forming technology for high strength Ti-6Al-4V. Various heat-treatments were applied to specimen in order to increase hot-workability and prevent galling with die Multiple forging were simulated with FE code to determine optimum process parameters including specimen temperature, strain rate, local strain, and thermal shrinkage. Forged samples were heat-treated again to increase their mechanical properties.

  • The aluminum alloy 6061-T6 has been successfully used in structural applications especially the pressure vessel of the Advanced Neutron Source research reactor. And aluminum alloys, including 6061-T6, have a face-centered-cubic crystals structure. Under normal circumstances face-centered-cubic crystal structures do not exhibit cleavage fractures even at very lo9w temperatures. In aluminum-based structures, plates frequently find use as connecting links. Mechanical fasteners are often utilized in instances where ease of application, familiarity with fabrication processes, and severe dynamic loading are of concern. Plates frequently find use as connecting elements in structures built from aluminum alloys. Many structural elements employ mechanical fasteners. Twenty and twenty aluminum alloy 6061-T6 plates, representing four different bolt patterns, were mechanically deformed. And variable materials such as A1 6061-T6, Al 2024-T3, Carbon/Epoxy, Glass/Epoxy Composite and Woven fiber composite, are used as patch materials. From this experiment, it has been shown that the strength of patch-repaired specimens is different with the patch materials.

  • The use of aluminum alloy parts in the automotive industry has been increasing recently due to its low weight compared with steel to improve fuel efficiency. Companies in the auto parts' manufacturing sector are expected to meet the government's strict environmental regulations. In this study, manufacturing process of aluminum alloy bolt has been designed from forming to heat treatment. Bolt forming process is composed of cold forging for body and rolling for thread. In this study only cold forging process is considered by employing the finite element method. In the cold forging process, preform shape was designed and damage value was considered for die design. Two steps of forging process has been developed by the simulation and a prototype was manugactured accordingly. As a final process, solution heat treatment and aging process was employed. A final prototype was found to meet the required specifications of tensile strength and dimension.

  • Ti alloys are used in a wide range of applications, especially for aviation and medical purposes, because of their high specific strength and excellent corrosion properties. When subjected to various manufacturing processes, one of the most popular Ti alloys, Ti-6Al-4V, exhibits a variety of microstructural and mechanical properties that makes it an attractive lightweight metal. The purpose of this study was to analyze the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti alloy wires. Subsequently, the microstructure and electrochemical behavior of Ti alloy bolts produced from these wires were analyzed. The Ti alloy wires are manufactured with different diameters (6.22, 7.81 mm alloys), and their microstructures are measured using electron backscatter diffraction. Recrystallization was observed to occur significantly in the 7.81 alloy than in the 6.81 alloy, and the strain distribution of 7.81 alloy is seen to be likely more uniform than 6.22 alloy. Ti alloy bolt was then forged under moderate temperature by using the 7.81 alloy. Results of the electrochemical analysis indicate that the Ti alloy bolt has excellent corrosion resistance.
