Simulation Study for Electromagnetic Pulse by High-Altitude Nuclear Explosion (고고도핵폭발 전자기펄스 피해 분석을 위한 전산모사 연구)

  • This paper describes computer simulation program of high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP). The HEMP is produced by the gamma rays form high-altitude nuclear explosion. The gamma rays generate a current of compton electron that leads to the production of electromagnetic fields. In case of high altitude nuclear burst, the electrical fields at the earth's surface are strong enough to be damaged for electrical and electronic device over a very much larger area. Therefore, national infrastructure will be serious damage such as power grid and communication network. In this paper introduce simulation program for calculation of HEMP and present to simulation study results of high altitude nuclear explosion experiment from U.S. and U.S.S.R.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) is achieving the Korea Space Launch Vehicle(KSLV) program according to National Space Technology Development Program. KSLV-I will be composed to liquid propellant(first stage) and solid propellant(second stage) propulsion system. The propulsion system of KSLV-I second stage is solid kick motor with high expansion ratio and its starting altitude is 300km high. In order to verify the performance of upper stage propulsion system designed to operate in the upper atmosphere, test facility which can simulate high altitude is needed. High Altitude Simulation Test Facility is composed to Thrust Measurement System, Control & Measurement system, Diffuser, SKID for cooling water supply to diffuser, CCTV, fire protection system and so on. This paper introduces TMS adapted to High Altitude Simulation Test for KSLV-I Kick Motor Development and results of hot firing test for its performance verification.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) performed the preliminary design of liquid rocket engine high-altitude simulation firing test facility for the development and qualification of LRE for the 2nd stage of KSLV-II. The engine high-altitude simulation firing test facility, which are to be constructed at Goheung Space Center, will provide liquid oxygen and kerosene to enable the high-altitude simulation firing test of 2nd stage engine at ground test facility. The high-altitude environment is obtained using a supersonic diffuser operated by the self-ejecting jet from the liquid rocket engine.

  • A high altitude test facility which includes supersonic diffuser and ejector has been developed to simulate atmospheric pressure at 25 km using a 500 N class small scale liquid rocket engine. Also high altitude simulation test for the small scale liquid rocket engine was performed to verify the facility's performance. The experimental facility consists of high altitude simulation device, propellants supply system and coolant supply system. Low pressure condition corresponding to about 27 km(0.021 bar) altitude atmosphere was successfully simulated and a small scale liquid rocket engine thrust level was confirmed at the simulated condition by the high altitude test facility verification test.

The Effect of Altitude Errors in Altitude-aided Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS) (고도를 고정한 GNSS 위치 결정 기법에서 고도 오차의 영향)

  • This paper analyzed the precision and accuracy of the altitude-aided GNSS using the altitude information from digital map. The precision of altitude-aided GNSS is analysed using the theoretically derived DOP. It is confirmed that the precision of altitude-aided GNSS is superior to the general 3D positioning method. It is also shown that the DOP of altitude-aided GNSS is independent of altitude bias error while the accuracy was influenced by the altitude bias error. Furthermore, it is shown that, since the altitude bias error influenced differently to each pseudorange measurement, the effect of the altitude bias error is more serious than clock bias error which does not influence position error at all. The results are evaluated by the simulation using the commercial RF simulator and GPS receiver. It confirmed that altitude-aided GNSS could improve not only precision but also accuracy if the altitude bias error are small. These results are expected to be easily applied for the performance improvement to the land and maritime applications.

  • Upper stage propulsion system designed for operation in the upper atmosphere should be tested under nozzle full flow conditions to verify its performance on the ground. KARI has carried out high altitude simulation test of KSLV-I kick motor using cylindrical supersonic exhaust diffuser. Also cold and hot flow test for the sub-scaled diffuser have been conducted to verify the design of real scale diffuser and to study its operating characteristics. This paper deals with the results obtained from these high altitude simulation tests.

  • Gas turbine engines for aircraft are usually operated at the altitude condition which is quite different from the ground condition. In order to measure the precise performance data at the altitude condition, the engine should be tested at the altitude condition by a real flight test or an altitude simulation test with an altitude test facility. In this paper, the present state of the altitude test facility and the test technologies at urn(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) will be introduced.

  • Mars exploration demands aerodynamic computations for a proper design of missions of spacecraft carrying instruments and astronauts to Mars. Both Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method play a key role for this purpose. To the author's knowledge, the altitude separating the fields of applicability of CFD and DSMC in Mars atmosphere entry is not yet clearly defined. The limitations in using DSMC at low altitudes are due to technical limitations of the computer. The limitations in using CFD at high altitudes are due to thermodynamic non-equilibrium. Here, this problem is studied in Mars atmosphere entry, considering the Mars Pathfinder capsule in the altitude interval 40-80 km, by means of a DSMC code. Non-equilibrium is quantified by the relative differences between translational temperature and: rotational (θt-r), vibrational (θt-v), overall (θt-ov) temperatures, anisotropy is quantified by the relative difference between the translational temperature component along x and those along y (θx-y) and along z (θx-z). The results showed that θt-r, θt-v, θx-y, θx-z are almost equivalent. The altitude of 45 km should be the limit altitude for a proper use of a CFD code and the altitude of 40 km should be the limit altitude for a reasonable use of a DSMC code.

  • Flight control design for the autonomous waypoint navigation of aircraft is presented in this study. The waypoints are defined in terms of desired longitude and latitude. The control design is conducted in longitudinal and lateral directions, respectively. The lateral control is based upon coordinated turn strategy for which no sideslip is allowed under the turning maneuver. The longitudinal control is mainly focused on altitude hold during navigation. Neural network control approach is applied to the altitude-hold mode control. Simulation of the proposed control strategy has been performed under various conditions. A graphical simulation tool was developed to visually demonstrate the control technique developed in this study. A method to simulate the gas turbine transient behavior is developed.   • Unmanned Helicopter has several abilities such as vertical Take off, hovering, low speed flight at low altitude. Such vehicles are becoming popular in actual applications such as search and rescue, aerial reconnaissance and surveillance. These vehicles also used under risky environments without threatening the life of a pilot. Since a small unmanned helicopter is very sensitive to environmental conditions, it is generally known that the flight control is very difficult problems. The nonlinear adaptive fuzzy controller design procedure and its applications for altitude control of unmanned helicopter were described in the paper. This research was concentrated on describing the design methodologies of altitude controller design for small unmanned helicopter acquiring autonomous take off and vertical movement. The design methodologies and performance of the altitude controller were simulated and verified with an adaptive fuzzy controller. Throughout simulation results, I showed that the proposed adaptive controllers have enhanced control performance such as robustness, effectiveness and safety, in the altitude control of the unmanned helicopter.
