  • Although the surface of aluminum alloy has good corrosion resistance property, the surface of the aluminum rolling stock should be painted for good appearance and protection of the body. For better painting of the aluminum carbody, the surface must also be well pretreated. In this paper, painting process of the aluminum rolling stock is described and the test results of the painted surface is presented. As accumulated data concerning to the painting technology for the aluminum rolling stocks are absent in our country, the presented test results will be helpful for mass production of aluminum rolling stocks in the near future.

  • Auto industry has employed resistance spot welding(RSW) to join steel sheets for structural rigidity of automobile body. Driven by the need to reduce weight and fuel consumption, car companies have been evaluating aluminum intensive vehicles(AIVs) as a way to reduce vehicle weight without downsizing. During the transition from all steel-construction vehicle body to aluminum intensive body, joining aluminum to steel sheets emerges as a serious contender in automobile body. This paper deals with application of transition material to RSW aluminum to steel. Placing transition material insert between the aluminum/steel interface was found very effective to overcome physical incompatibility between aluminum and steel. Use of transition insert allows for two separate weld nuggets to be formed in their respective aluminum/aluminum and steel/steel interfaces. This RSW processes was monitored with the aid of dynamic resistance sampling. Typical patterns in sampled dynamic resistance curves indicated formation of sound nugget. The growth of two separate nuggets was examined by micro-cross section test.

  • The affection of activated carbon on the dissolved aluminum ion in drinking water has been observed. In addition, the aluminum ion removal capability of activated, alumina, chitosan, and ion exchange resin have been investigated. Experimental results indicated that the coal based activated carbon released considerable amount of aluminum ion to the water while coconut shell based activated carbon didn't. However the release was not continuous. Activated alumina didn't show any recognizable removal capability for aluminum ion in water. Particulate chitosan has removed aluminum ion although dissolved chitosan has not. However it need to development a regeneration process for chitosan to be an effective mean for aluminum ion removal. Ion exchange resin showed a reliable aluminum ion removal capability. The ion exchange capacity was 2.63 meq/g resin for the aluminum ion in drinking water.

  • Aluminum and CFRP tube is light-weight material representatively but collapse mechanism is different under axial loading. Aluminum tube absorbs energy by stable plastic deformation under axialloading. While CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics)tube absorb synergy by unstable brittle failure but its specific strength and stiffness is higher than that of aluminum tube. In this study, for complement of detect and synergy effect by combination with the advantages of each member, the axialcollapsetests were performed for combined aluminum CFRP tubes which are composed of aluminum tubes wrapped with CFRP out side aluminum square tubes. Collapsecharacteristics were analyzed for combined square tubes which have different CFRP orientation angle and thickness. Test results were compared with that of aluminum tubes and CFRP tubes.

  • Biomass of non-living brown seaweed Sargassum fluitans pretreated by different methods is capable of taking up more than $10\%$ (11 meq/g) of its dry weight in aluminum at a pH of 4.5. It is indicated that the biomass sequestered the aluminum in the form of polynuclear aluminum species. The fraction of $Al(OH)_3$ Precipitated in the aluminum nitrate solution without biomass at pH 4.5 increased as the Al concentration increased. Aluminum-alginate complex precipitated in the solution as alginate was partially released from the biomass. External colloidal precipitate occurring in native and protonated S. fluitans biomass sorption systems caused a significant difference in Al sorption isotherms determined by standard and desorption methods, respectively, Sodium ions added for pH adjustment were not sorbed at all in the presence of aluminum ions.

  • Press formabilities of aluminum sheets for automobile body were investigated. Plane strain stretching test (called RIST-PSST), cupping test and U bending test were performed to assess the press formability of aluminum sheets respectively. The results showed that aluminum sheets are generally inferior to cold-rolled steel sheet of deep drawing quality (CSP3N) in press formability. The limiting punch height (LPH) and limiting plane strain (FLCo) of aluminum sheets are 50%-70% level compared to that of CSP3N. Moreover, the limiting drawing ratios(LDR) of aluminum sheets are ranged between 1.95 and 2.1. The poor press formability of aluminum sheets is responsible for low values of total elongation and plastic anisotropy parameter in tensile characteristic. The shape fixability of aluminum sheets evaluated in U bending test is very poor due to its low elastic modulus compared to CSP3N.

  • For the axial crushing tests of various shape of tubes, it was reported that composite tubes need trigger mechanism to avoid brittle failure. In this study, static axial crush tests were performed with the new aluminum/GFRP hybrid tubes. Glass/Epoxy prepregs were wrapped around aluminum tube and co-cured. The failure of hybrid tube was stable and progressive without trigger mechanism, and specific energy absorption was increased to maximum 34% in comparison with aluminum tube. Effective energy absorption is possible for inner aluminum tube because wrapped composite tube constrain the deflection of aluminum tube and reduce the folding length. The failure of hybrid composite tube was stable without trigger mechanism because inner aluminum tube could play the role of crack initiator and controller. Aluminum/Glass-Epoxy hybrid tube is suitable for the vehicle front structure due to effective energy absorption capability, easy production, and simple application for RTM process.

  • This paper investigates the effect of plasma treatment of aluminum on the fracture toughness of aluminum/CFRP composites, The surface of the aluminum panel was treated by a DC plasma. The plasma treatment was carried out at volume ratio of acetylene gas to nitrogen gas of 5:5 and the treatment times used was 30 sec. The fracture toughness of plasma-treated aluminum/CFRP' composites was compared with that of untreated aluminum/CFRP composites and The fracture surface of aluminum/CFRP composites was compared with SEM. The results showed that fracture toughness of plasm-treated aluminum/CFRP composites was about 50% higher than that of untreated aluminum/CFRP composites.

  • The Application of powder metallurgy (PM) aluminum structural parts is at its early growing stage, despite of some automotive applications. The market potential for PM aluminum, however, is large. Growth is expected from the market expansion of the existing applications and new applications, including the replacements of aluminum and zinc based castings and some ferrous PM automotive parts by PM aluminum. Compared to castings, PM is an efficient mass production technology. The PM aluminum is more competitive than die casting for some automotive applications. Besides weight saving leading to performance improvement, the total cost increase for aluminum PM parts is less than 15% compared to ferrous PM automotive parts. The future is promising for PM aluminum.

  • This work investigated fatigue characteristics of aluminum repaired by CFRP composites. Three specimens, cracked aluminum, cracked aluminum patched by CFRP, and plasma-treated aluminum patched by CFRP were used for the fatigue tests. The results showed that the fatigue crack growth behavior of cracked aluminum was improved by repairing the cracked area with composite patch. Specifically, the specimen repaired by composite patch showed about three times more fatigue life than the cracked aluminum. The plasma-treated aluminum repaired by composite patch showed about five times more fatigue life than the cracked aluminum.
