  • The use of high-strength aluminum alloys is increasing in shipbuilding industry, particularly for the design and construction of war ships, littoral surface craft and combat ships, and fast passenger ships. While various welding methods are used today to fabricate aluminum ship structures, namely gas metallic arc welding (GMAW), laser welding and friction stir welding (FSW), FSW technology has been recognized to have many advantages for the construction of aluminum structures, as it is a low-cost welding process. In the present study, mechanical properties of friction stir welded aluminum alloys are examined experimentally. Tensile testing is undertaken on dog-bone type test specimen for aluminum alloys 5083 and 5383. The test specimen includes friction stir welded material between identical alloys and also dissimilar alloys, as well as unwelded (base) alloys. Mechanical properties of fusion welded aluminum alloys are also tested and compared with those of friction stir welded alloys. The insights developed from the present study are documented together with details of the test database. Part of the present study was obtained from the Ship Structure Committee project SR-1454 (Paik, 2009), jointly funded by its member agencies.

  • The utilization of aluminum scrap is a subject of great importance in terms of reducing energy consumption and environmental protection. However, aluminum scrap contains impurities, which can degrade the properties of aluminum alloy, especially corrosion resistance. This study examines the effect of scrap charge rate of aluminum alloys about microstructures and corrosion characteristics. According to the metallographic examinations, Mg2Si tended to become coarser and its uniformity was decreased by increasing aluminum scrap charge rate. The immersion test exhibited corrosion progressed through the eutectic areas due to micro-galvanic interactions. Electrochemical measurements revealed that excess aluminum scrap could reduce the intergranular corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. Results showed that the scrap charge rate is important factor in the design of corrosion resistance of aluminum die casting alloys.

  • This study deals with the characteristics of wire-cut EDM(Electrical Discharge Machining)process in aluminum alloys. Besides 2 series and 7 series of aluminum alloys for aerospace applications, porous aluminum is tested, which is used for sound absorbing matherial and interior and exterior material of building. Jinyoung JW-30 wire cutting machine was used in this experiment. Tap wate passed a filter and ionization was used as the discharging solution. An immerision method was applied as a cooling method because it separates chips effectively and machinability is good even with low value of electric current. The speed of fabrication was estimated by measuring the travel distance of the work piece and time spent for the movement. As pulse-on-time increased the fabrication speed decreased. On the other hand, as peak voltage of peak current increased the fabrication speed increased. In general 7075 aluminum alloy resulted in higher fabrication speed.

  • Mechanical and thermal properties of spray-cast hypereutectic Al-20wt.%Si-xwt.%Fe alloys (x=0, 1, 3, 5) were investigated. After the spray-casting, hot extrusion was performed at $400^{\circ}C$. Intermetallic compound (${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$) and primary Si are observed in the spray-cast aluminum alloys. The size of primary Si and intermetallic compound of the spray-aluminum alloys became finer and more uniformly distributed than that of the permanent mold cast ones. Ultimate tensile strength of the spray-cast aluminum alloys increased by increasing Fe contents, but that of the permanent mold cast aluminum alloys decreased by increasing Fe contents possibly due to increased amount of coarse intermatallic compound. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTEs) of the aluminum alloys became lower with finer primary Si and intermetallic compound, and this is attributed to the increased amount of interfacial area between the aluminum matrix and the phases of finer Si and intermetallic compound.

  • Aluminum alloys are extensively employed in several industries, such as automobile, aerospace, and architecture, owing to their high specific strength and electrical and thermal conductivities. However, to meet the rising industrial demands, aluminum alloys must be designed with both excellent mechanical and thermal properties. Computer-aided alloy design is emerging as a technique for developing novel alloys to overcome these trade-off properties. Thus, the development of a new experimental method for designing alloys with high-throughput confirmation is gaining focus. A new approach that rapidly manufactures aluminum alloys with different compositions is required in the alloy design process. This study proposes a combined approach to rapidly investigate the relationship between the microstructure and properties of aluminum alloys using a direct energy deposition system with a dual-nozzle metal 3D printing process. Two types of aluminum alloy powders (Al-4.99Si-1.05Cu-0.47Mg and Al-7Mg) are employed for the 3D printing-based combined method. Nine types of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys are manufactured using the combined method, and the relationship between their microstructures and properties is examined.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as a corrosion inhibitor on the pitting corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys used in electric vehicle battery cooling systems within a mixture of ethylene glycol and water (EG-W) coolant. Potentiodynamic polarization testing revealed unstable passive film formation on the aluminum alloys in the absence of SDBS. However, the addition of SDBS resulted in a robust passive film, enhancing the pitting corrosion resistance across all examined alloys. Pitting corrosion was predominantly observed near intermetallic compounds in the presence of Cl? ions, which was attributed to galvanic interactions. Among tested alloys, A1040 demonstrated superior resistance due to its lower areal fraction of precipitates and donor density. The incorporation of SDBS inhibitors mitigated the overall pitting corrosion process by hindering Cl? ion penetration. These findings suggest that SDBS can significantly improve pitting corrosion resistance in aluminum alloys employed in battery coolant environments.

  • The binary Al-Mg alloys are the basis for the 5000 series of non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys. In general, 5000 series of aluminum alleys have a high strength, good welding characteristics and a high resistance to corrosion, especially under the seawater. Thus the aluminum alloys are adopted in the hull material of hovercraft that is required light in weight as well as high strength. It is very important that the weldability problem of these alloys caused by high thermal conductivities welding deformation, porosity and so on. in this study, auto-welding equipment was applied for aluminum welding automation. Also, optimal welding data were studied by investigating welding characteristics for various shapes of weldment to use Al 5083 that is representative structural materials of the 5000 series of aluminum alloys.

  • In a view point of earth environmental protection and social requirement, adhesively bonded structures of aluminum alloys have become to be employed for the purpose of decreasing fuel ratio by weight reduction and to improve performance in various engineering fields such as aircrafts, automobiles, rolling stocks and so on. In spite of such wide applications in adhesively bonded structures of aluminum alloys, the quantitative fracture criterion and evolution method of its bonded strength have not been established yet. The objective of this paper is to establish fracture criterion considering stress singularity at interface edges in adhesively bonded structures of aluminum alloys. Through the analyses of boundary element method and static fracture experiments with three different types of specimens in the adhesively bonded joints of aluminum alloys, its fracture criterion was proposed and discussed about strength evolution of adhesively bonded structures.

  • It is well known that iron is one of the most common impurity elements found in aluminum and its alloys. Iron in the aluminum forms an intermetallic compounds such as $FeAl_3$. The $FeAl_3$ particles on the aluminum surface are one of the most detrimental phases to the corrosion process and anodizing procedure for aluminum and its alloys. Trial and error surface treatment will be carried out to find the preferential and effective removal of $FeAl_3$ particles on the surfaces without dissolution of aluminum matrix around the particles. One of the preferable surface treatments for the aim of getting $FeAl_3$ free surface was an electrochemical treatment such as cathodic current density of $-2kAm^{-2}$ in a 20-30 mass% $HNO_3$ solution for the period of 300s. The corrosion characteristics of aluminum surface with $FeAl_3$ free particles are examined in a $0.1kmol/m^3$ NaCl solution. It is found that aluminum with free $FeAl_3$ particles shows higher corrosion resistance than aluminum with $FeAl_3$ particles.
