  • Marine aquariums are excellent venues for accomplishing the purpose of marine education, and school field trips conducted at non-formal settings continue to be an important part of K-12 education. The purpose of this study is to provide quantitative data regarding the extent and quality of marine aquarium field trips conducted by elementary school teachers in Seoul. A web survey designed to explore elementary school teachers' experiences and perspectives on aquarium field trips identified several concerns regarding Korean marine aquarium education. Discussions for both Korean aquaria's educational roles and Korean elementary schools' successful field trips to aquaria are presented with the goal of improving the quality of Korean marine aquarium education.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the nutrition composition and physiological changes, and to evaluate the food quality of live fish in cultured and wild fishes which have been kept in an aquarium tank. The moisture and lipid content of wild and cultured fishes when kept in an aquarium tank for seven-days storage was found to be lower than those of the initial stage storage(zero day). The breaking strength was also rapidly decreased in all of live fishes tested in this study as the periods of storage extended. The protein content did not differ significantly. However, the content of cortisol, which is a indicator indicating a stress reaction in tissues, was apt to increasing as the periods of storage extended. The cortisol content of wild fishes were higher than those of cultured fishes. On the other hand, the activity of activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which is also a indicator indicating a stress reaction, were not changed in the serum of wild and cultured fish, suggesting the ALT and AST activity dose not directly related with a healthy loss originated from stress. The death ratio of wild fishes were higher than cultured ones due to limited activity and stress during the storage in a aquarium tank.

  • The zebra shark Stegostoma fasciatum which had been reared in the commercial aquaria was found dead and submitted for postmortem examination. A pure bacterial culture was isolated from pale and enlarged liver. The analysis of ureC and 16S rRNA genes confirmed the isolate as Photobacterium (P.) damselae subsp. damselae and this pathogen was sensitive to gentamicin. Although, no mortality in mouse was observed in the experimental infection study, the isolation of this pathogen in aquarium fish is significant because it can act as a reservoir to other aquatic animals and can also be zoonotic potential to human during aquarium management. This paper describes the first isolation of P. damselae subsp. damselae from zebra shark.

  • To study the influence of background color and substratum on hypermelanosis of starry flounder, we compared the daily food intake (DFI), the feed efficiency (FE), the survival, the growth, the ratio of pigmented area on the blind side and the ratio of hypermelanic fish duplicately reared for 180 days in dark-green FRP aquarium (control), white FRP aquarium together with dark-green substratum. The ratio of pigmented area on the blind side was significantly higher at the dark-green group than at the white group. DFI, FE and growth were higher in the dark-green substratum. Pigmented area rate and ratio of hypermelanic fish were significantly higher at the dark green group than at the high dark-green substratum. The results suggest that bright tank color and substratum bottom could inhibit the hypermelanosis.

  • The aqua-pet industry has been growing rapidly in the world's developed countries as well as Japan and Europe, but it was a small scale in compared with fisheries part, and political interest came mainly limited to food industry and research in Korea so that it has not been activated. Recently, a paradigm change for fisheries policy bring to have a interest in the aqua-pet industry as future growth power source. Therefore, this study shows that the advanced aqua-pet industry of Japan would be researched and analyzed in historical background, national interest and current aquarium market scale in order to predict the domestic aqua-pet industry rapidly developed in Korea.

  • The coastal water of Korean Peninsula is the major habitat for finless porpoises. However, hundreds of finless porpoises are currently caught incidentally by stow-net fishery every year. To prevent the mass mortality of finless porpoises and conserve marine animals, Busan Aquarium has been designated as a "Marine Life Ex-Situ Conservation Institution and Marine Animal Conservation Center," and Cetacean Research Institute, under the National Institute of Fisheries Science have started RRR (rescue, rehabilitation and release) project together since 2011. From 2012 to 2013, four individuals of finless porpoises had been rescued and two of them finally released to their original habitat after fully recovered in July 2013. As a result, according to growth curve of finless porpoise of Korea more than 140 cm of body length, 38 kg of total weight referred to adult, results of observation of the change in the hormone revealed that mating time of finless porpoises is January, Jun and July. To become the initial institution which rescues, treatment, husbandry and releases finless porpoise in Korea.

  • The object of this study is to differentiate the reproductive behaviors of Pungitius sinensis and P. kaibarae inhabiting the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. We collected P. sinensis from Jusu stream, Okkyemyeon and P. kaibarae from Sacheon stream, Sacheon-myeon both in Gangwon province and subsequently raised and observed them in an aquarium. At the beginning of the reproductive season, male P. sinensis got tinged with dark green, made a territory, and built nests on the bottom. On the other hand, male P. kaibarae became black all over, its white ventral spines became conspicuous and built nests on the stems of waterweed off the bottom. In the courtship dance, male P. sinensis made frequent attempts to entice females into their nests after many bitings, while male P. kaibarae mostly did this with conspicuous jumpings. In courtship behaviors, the body's angle of male P. kaibarae with his head down was larger than that of male P. sinensis by 50-60 degrees. During courtship, the biting frequency as an index of aggressive behavior was greater in P. sinensis and the jumping frequency as an index of sexual behavior was greater in P. kaibarae. During the courtship dance, bitings tended to suppress jumpings, for P. sinensis, but not for P. kaibarae.

  • To study the influence of light intensity on blind-side hypermelanosis of starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus, we compared growth, glucose, cortisol, ratio of malpigmented blind-side area, ambicolored fish ratio and expression of mch mRNA for 60 days in 0 lux(darkness) and 20 lux(low light density). The test was done in duplicate at 50 fish/tank with the selected ordinary juvenile flounder. The rearing was performed in FRP aquarium tanks ($H100cm{\times}L100cm{\times}W100cm$). Growth was higher in the 0 lux. The ratio of malpigmented blind-side area and ambicolored fish ratio were significantly higher at the 0 lux than at the 20 lux. The result suggests that 20 lux could inhibit the hypermelanosis. The expression level of MCH 1, 2 mRNA was significantly lower in 0 lux, indicating that MCH 1, 2 and light intensity are related to blind-side hypermelanosis of starry flounder.
