  • Optimizing the performance of a composite sensor array is necessary when the number of sensors to choose from is large. In this paper, we present a chemical sensors array optimization method using Wilks Lamda algorithm applicable a device to detect low concentration of alcohol from driver's exhale breath for interlocking engine ignition preventing drink-driving. More than 20 chemical sensors fabricated different synthetic stuffs and heater temperatures by collaborators were nominated, 5 sensors were selected for optimal sensors array using the method, and alcohol samples were well discriminated from the interference gases inside the vehicle. It has been confirmed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA).

  • In this paper, the 2-dimensional uniaxial force sensors array is introduced to detect the distributed force using fiber Bragg gratings. Uniaxial force transducer was designed to avoid the chirping and micro bending which degrade the performance of the sensor. The Brags wavelength shift of the sensor was estimated using the finite element analysis. Using this uniaxial force sensor, the uniaxial force sensors array $(3{\times}3)$ was fabricated, and the Performance of this sensors array was evaluated. The Presented sensors may has very simple configuration and its wiring is very simple compared with any other force sensors arrays.

  • Pulse diagnosis is one of the representative diagnostic methods in Oriental medicine. In this study, a pulse pressure sensor array coated with silicone, which includes 6 piezo-resistive sensors and 1 thermistor, is fabricated for pulse measurement. It is necessary to coat the pulse sensor array with silicone to avoid the fracture or damage of pressure sensors when the sensor is in contact with the skin and a constant pressure is applied. However, the silicone coating on the pulse sensor array can cause signal interference among the sensors in the pulse sensor array. The interference number (IN), a calculation for expressing the degree of interference among channels, is changed according to the silicone thickness on the pulse sensor array. The IN is increased by a thick silicone coating, but the fabrication error, an important index for the mass production of the sensor array, is reduced by the thickness of the silicone coating. We propose that the thickness of the silicone on the pulse sensor array is an important consideration for the performance of the fabricated sensor and manufacturing repeatability.

  • In this paper, an iterative array shape estimation technique is presented, which is based on the use of the least squares polynomial fitting to the data from heading sensors. The estimated polynomial shape model is then used for calculating the hydrophone positions on the assumption that the arc distances between sensors are constant. In order to verify the applicability of the proposed algorithm, numerical simulations are performed using two types of non-linear array shapes. In addition the noise effects of heading sensors on the array shape estimation results and the performance of beamformer are also investigated.

  • A method for increasing the difference of side-lobe level in spherical microphone array is presented. In array signal processing, it is known that narrow interval between sensors can increase the difference between main lobe and side-lobe of array response which eventually increase the source recognition capability. Recent commercial array being used, however, have shown certain limitation in using the number of sensors due to its costs and geometrical size of array. To overcome this problem, we have adapted MEMS sensors into spherical microphone array. To check out the improvement, two different types of spherical microphone array were designed. One array is composed with 32 regular instrument microphones and the other one is 85 MEMS sensors. Simulation and experiments were conducted on a sinusoidal noise source with two arrays. The time history data were analyzed with spherical harmonic decomposition and beamforming technique. 85 MEMS sensors array showed the improved side-lobe level suppression by more than 4 dB above the frequency content of 2 kHz compared to 32-sensor array.

  • In order to prevent drink-driving by detecting concentration of alcohol from driver's exhale breath, twenty chemical sensors fabricated. The one of purposes for sensor array which consists of those sensors is to discriminate between target gas(alcohol) and interference gases($CH_3CH_2OH$, CO, NOx, Toluene, and Xylene). Wilks's lambda was presented to achieve above purpose and optimal sensors were selected using the method. In this paper, step-wise sensor elimination based on Euclidean distance was investigated for selecting optimal sensors and compared with a result of Wilks's lambda method. The selectivity and sensitivity of sensor array were used for comparing performance of sensor array as a result of two methods. The data acquired from selected sensor were analyzed by pattern analysis methods, principal component analysis and Sammon's mapping to analyze cluster tendency in the low space (2D). The sensor array by stepwise sensor elimination method had a better sensitivity and selectivity compared to a result of Wilks's lambda method.

  • The geometrical and electrical errors of array sensors can severely degrade the performance of array sensor system. Various calibration techniques are developed to alleviate this problem. In this paper, two different calibration methods with respect to location, gain and phase of array sensors are presented. One method applies the first-order Taylor series expansion to approximate the true steering vector from the nominal values of array sensors. Then a set of equations is formed by using the null characteristics of the MUSIC spectrum to estimate errors of location, gain and phase of array sensors. Another method estimates these errors based on the data covariance matrix of pilot sources. From the simulations, it is demonstrated that two calibration algorithms calibrated an array system successfully. In addition to that, Fistas and Manikas's algorithm is more robust against noise than Ng and Lie's one when SNR is from 10dB to 50dB.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to obtain a linear characteristic using soft computing for systems which have array sensors of nonlinear characteristics. Also a procedure utilizing the pattern information of array sensors without additional sensors is proposed to reduce disturbance effects. For a typical example, even a single CdS cell for CdS array has nonlinear characteristics. Overall linear characteristic for CdS array is obtained using fuzzy logic for each cell and overlapped portion. In addition, further improvement for linearization is obtained applying genetic algorithms for the parameters of membership functions. Also the effect of disturbing external light changes to the CdS array can be reduced without using any additional sensors for calibration. The proposed method based on fuzzy logic shows improvements for position measurements and disturbance reduction to external light changes due to the fuzziness of the shadow boundary as well as the inherent nonlinearity of the CdS array. This improvement is shown by applying the proposed method to the ball position measurements of a magnetic levitation system.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm to design the non-linear array so as to form efficiently the one-shot beam with relatively less sensors for acoustic measurement. In this algorithm, according to the spatial sampling theory the part for high frequency(HF) band has equispaced sensor array and the sensor distances below the HF band are decided as a function of number of HF sensors. As the results of the simulations, the mean and variances of directivity index(DI) of non-linear array which has less sensors are similar to those of linear array. and the DI variation for beam steering angle is very small. And the beam width at -2dB point is 6.8°. Thus it is confirmed that the design algorithm for non-linear array which is proposed to have less sensors can be efficiently used in acoustic measurement.
