친환경형 중온 폴리머 개질 아스팔트 바인더의 상대적 물성 비교평가 (Relative Property Evaluation of Pro-Environmental Warm Polymer-Modified Asphalt Binder)

  • In this paper, warm asphalt binder was proposed as a substitute for the polymer-modified asphalt binder to get higher viscosity than that of the polymer-modified at the same temperature. Performance grade test and rotational viscosity of warm asphalt binder were conducted to evaluate the property variations due to the addition of admixture. Research results showed that the viscosity of warm asphalt binder at $100^{\circ}C$ was similar to that of the conventional asphalt binder. The performance and durability of warm asphalt binder were also comparable to those of the polymer-modified. It is considered that the active applications of warm asphalt binder can reduce environmental damages due to less diffusions of carbon dioxide compared to the conventional.

재생 첨가제를 활용한 재활용 아스팔트 바인더의 실내 공용성 평가 (Laboratory Performance Evaluation of Recycled Asphalt Binders with Differing Rejuvenators)

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to investigate the properties of recycled asphalt binders with five different rejuvenators, in order to evaluate the applicability of the recycled asphalt binders compared with the original asphalt binder. METHODS : In order to simulate recycled asphalt binders, fresh asphalt binders are aged by various Superpave aging procedures, such as the rolling thin-film oven (RTFO) and the pressure aging vessel (PAV). Then, selected rejuvenators are added to the aged asphalt binders in the amount of 5%, 10%, and 15%. The asphalt binder properties are evaluated by the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), the rotational viscometer (RV), and the bending beam rheometer (BBR). In this study, AP-5 (penetration grade 60-80, PG 64-16) asphalt binder is used. A total of five types of rejuvenators are employed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : When considering aged asphalt without a new asphalt binder, it seems that the percentage of rejuvenator used in Korea is a bit too low, and that it fails to possess the characteristics of the original binder. From the current practice of evaluating the properties of recycled binder based on penetration ratio only, the amount of rejuvenator required is similar for the long-term-aged binder, but is excessive for the longest-term aged binder, causing deterioration of workability and stiffness of the recycled binder.

폐비닐을 함유한 아스팔트 바인더 물성의 실내 시험 (Laboratory Testing of Material Properties of Asphalt Binder Containing Wasted Vinyl)

  • PURPOSES: In this study, various laboratory tests were performed to investigate the suitability of wasted vinyl as a modifier of asphalt binder. METHODS: Based on the ASTM specification, variations in material properties of asphalt binder such as penetration, flash point, softening point, ductility, penetration index (PI), and performance grade (PG) with vinyl content were tested and analyzed. RESULTS: Lavoratory tests revealed that penetration and ductility of the asphalt binder increased with the vinyl content. The flash point, softening point, and PI decreased, and PG changed from 64-22 to 70-22 with increase of the vinyl content. CONCLUSIONS: Wasted vinyl modified the material properties of the asphalt binder. However, the asphalt binder with vinyl content over 6.0% was unsuitable as a pavement material.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 중온화 첨가제(LEADCAP$^{(R)}$)를 사용한 중온 아스팔트 바인더의 노화 방법에 따른 물성 변화 특성을 평가하고자 하였다. 아스팔트 바인더의 노화 거동을 모사하기 위해 단기노화인 RFTO를 실시하였으며, 햇빛에 의한 자연 노화 거동을 알아보기 위해 자외선 경화기를 이용하여 자외선에 의한 열화거동을 모사하였다. 이러한 열화 중온 아스팔트 바인더의 역학적인 물성과 유변동학적인 특성을 시험하기 위해서 만능시험기(UTM)과 동적전단유동기를 이용하여 직접인장력과 유변동학적인 거동을 평가하였다. 또한, 열분석 장비를 이용하여 온도에 따른 중온 아스팔트 바인더의 특성을 평가하여, 자외선 노출에 따른 열화가 발생하여도 온도에 따른 물성 변화가 많이 발생하지 않음을 발견하였다. $70^{\circ}C$에서 중온화 첨가제가 첨가한 단기노화 중온 아스팔트 바인더의 경우, PG 등급에서의 고온 등급의 기준값을 만족함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 저온에서 중온 아스팔트 바인더의 인장 특성을 평가한 결과, 인장강도 향상과 함께 인장력이 증가됨을 알 수 있었다.

동전단 마스터곡선을 이용한 아스팔트 바인더의 노화 특성 평가 (Characteristics of Dynamic Shear Modulus Mastercurve of Aged or Unaged Asphalt Binders)

  • PURPOSES: To characterize the aging effect on asphalt binder, dynamic shear modulus mastercurve of two typical asphalt binders are developed. METHODS: To develop dynamic shear modulus mastercurve, dynamic shear modulus at high temperature and creep stiffness at low temperature are measured by temperature sweep test and bending beam rheometer test, respectively. RESULTS: It is observed that the aging effect on asphalt binder can be clearly observed from dynamic shear modulus mastercurve and the mastercurve can be utilized to predict behavior of asphalt binder at wide range of temperature. CONCLUSIONS: It is confirmed that SBS 5% modified binder has more desirable mechanical property at low and high temperature as a pavement material comparing to PG64-22 binder and the mastercurve is an effective tool to evaluate the property of asphalt binder.

아스팔트 콘크리트의 노화 후 추출한 바인더의 물리적 특성 변화 (Change of Physical Properties of Binder Extracted from after Artificial Aging of Asphalt Concretes)

  • 아스팔트는 노화에 따라 물리적 특성변화가 일어난다. 하지만 같은 수준으로 노화시킨 아스팔트 혼합물들임에도 골재와 결합재 등에 따라 서로 다른 강성이나 취성을 보인다. 이는 노화에 의한 바인더 특성 변화의 차이에 기인한 것인데 이와 같이 혼합물 내에서 바인더의 물리적 특성 변화 차이에 영향을 주는 요인에 대한 연구는 별로 없다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 아스팔트 혼합물의 노화 후추출한 바인더의 물리적 특성을 측정하고 물성 차이에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석하였다. 폴리머 3종류와 골재 두 종류, 두 가지 입도, 두 종류의 아스팔트를 사용하여 32종류의 혼합물을 제조하고, 이를 장 단기 노화 처리하였다. 각 혼합물의 노화 후 Abson recovery 방법으로 바인더를 추출 회생하고 바인더 물성 시험(침입도, 동점도, 절대점도)을 수행하였다. 이를 SAS를 이용하여 통계 분석하였다. 바인더 시험에서 골재 종류와 폴리머가 노화시 물성변화에 차이를 가져오는 심각한 요인임을 알 수 있었고, 입도는 점도 변화에 큰 영향을 미치는 인자인 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구 결과, 혼합물 내의 바인더 물성은 골재 종류, 입도, 개질제의 종류, 바인더의 종류 등의 다양한 요인에 의해 많은 영향을 받는 다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Development and Characterization of the Asphalt Binder with Low-heat and Crosslink Structured Additive

  • In this study, a low-heat additive with a crosslink structure was dispersed in asphalt to simultaneously lower the production temperature of, and to modify the asphalt binder. This low-heat additive was prepared by different feeding ratios of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and polyvinylchloride (PVC) as polymer modifiers, and ZnO as a crosslinking agent. In order to confirm the crosslinking density and compatibility of the crosslink structured low-heat additive with asphalt, surface free energy, swelling ratio, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) parameters were carefully investigated to examine this relationship, and the role of the crosslink structured low-heat additive. In addition, by measuring the penetration and softening point of the asphalt binder, it was confirmed that it corresponds to PG 64-22. With increasing ZnO in the crosslink structured low-heat additive, the swelling ratio decreased, leading to an increase in crosslinking density. The crosslink structured low-heat additive and the asphalt binder were found to be compatible with each other by DSC and SEM analysis.

중온화 액상형 화학첨가제 개발과 이를 적용한 중온 아스팔트의 성능 평가 (Development and Performance Evaluation of Liquid-type Chemical Additive for Warm-Mix Asphalt)

  • PURPOSES: The liquid-type chemical warm-mix asphalt (WMA) additive has been developed. This study evaluates the basic properties of the additive and the mechanical properties of WMA asphalt and mixture manufactured by using the newly developed chemical additive. METHODS: First, the newly developed WMA additive was applied to the original asphalt by various composition of additive components and dosage ratio of additive. These WMA asphalt binders were evaluated in terms of penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity, and PG grade. Based on the binder test results, one best candidate was chosen to apply to the mixture and then the mechanical properties of WMA mixture were evaluated for moisture susceptibility, dynamic modulus, and rutting and fatigue resistance. RESULTS : According to the binder test, WMA asphalt binders showed the similar properties to the original asphalt binder except the penetraion index of WMA additive was a little higher than original binder. From the Superpave mix design, the optimum asphalt content and volumetric properties of WMA mixture were almost the same with those of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixture even though the production and compaction temperatures were $30^{\circ}C$ lower for the WMA mixture. From the first set of performance evaluation, it was found that the WMA mixture would have some problem in moisture susceptibility. The additive was modified to improve the resistance to moisture and the second set of performance evaluation showed that the WMA mixture with modified chemical additive would have the similar performance to HMA mixture. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the various laboratory tests, it was concluded that the newly developed chemical WMA additve could be successfully used to produce the WMA mixture with the comparable performance to the HMA mixture. These laboratory evaluations should be confirmed by applying this additive to the field and monitoring the long-term performance of the pavement, which are scheduled in the near future.

PE Wax를 첨가한 아스팔트 바인더의 물리적 특성 (Evaluation of the Effect of PE Wax on Asphalt Binder Properties)

  • 일반적으로 아스팔트 개질재의 경우 아스팔트 바인더의 고온 점성을 증가시킬 뿐만 아니라 믹싱 및 포설온도에서의 점도 또한 증가시켜 높은 생산온도 및 시공온도를 요구하게 된다. 이와 달리 Wax의 경우 아스팔트 바인더의 강성을 증가시키기도 하지만 일정 온도가 넘으면 물처럼 유동성을 확보해 믹싱 및 포설온도에서의 점도를 낮추어 작업성을 높이는 효과가 있다. 본 연구에서는 실내실험을 통해 PE Wax가 아스팔트 바인더에 첨가되었을 경우 그 특성을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 SBS, 폐타이어 고무분말 개질 아스팔트 바인더와 비교 분석하였다. 또한 Wax가 기존 개질재인 SBS, 폐타이어 고무분말과 함께 사용되었을 경우 그 효과를 분석하였다. 실험 결과, Wax type I은 내유동성 강화에 큰 효과가 있으며 작업성 개선에 약간의 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. Wax type II는 아스팔트 바인더의 작업성 개선에 크게 기여하고, 상온에서 부드러운 특성으로 균열에 대한 저항성을 증진시키는 것으로 나타났다.

MSCR을 포함한 PG 실험법을 이용한 고분자 개질 바인더의 성능평가 (Performance Evaluation of Polymer Modified Asphalt Binder with PG Testing Protocols)

  • PURPOSES: SUPERPAVE binder grade tests including Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery(MSCR) test are applied to evaluate rheological properties of four polymer modified binders. METHODS: To evaluate grade of four modified binders, PG testing protocols, such as DSR, BBR and MSCR are employed. RESULTS: It is observed that MSCR test shows different performance grades especially on modified binders. Both DMP and EG binder show similar high temperature performance to SBS 5% modified binder. CONCLUSIONS: Binder Grading system in Korea need to be reviewed to properly reflect the performnace of modified binders. The binders modified with DMP and EG can be possible alternatives SBS 5% modified binder considering its performance and cost.
