  • We have observed the nonlinear magneto-optic effect(NMOE) based on atomic coherence in $^{87}$ Rb D$_1$-line using the Rb vapor cell containing 50 Torr of Ne. The width of the NMOE signal was measured to be 2$\pi$${\times}$464 Hz, when the peak-to-peak B-field variation was 1 mGauss. The result of this work may be applied to a high-sensitivity magnetometer.

  • A field emission projection microscope was constructed to investigate the atomic and chemical-bonding structure of molecules using electron in-line holography. Fringes of carbon nanotube images were found to be interferograms equivalent to those created by the electron biprism in conventional electron microscopy. By exploiting carbon nanotubes as the filament of the electron biprism, we measured the transverse coherence length of the electron beam from tungsten field emitters. The measurements revealed that a partially coherent electron-beam was emitted from a finite area.

  • We report a method for optical monitoring of tumors in an animal model using optical coherence tomography (OCT). In a spectral domain OCT system, a superluminescent diode light source with a full width of 66 nm at half maximum and peak wavelength of 950 nm was used to take images having an axial resolution of 6.8 ${\mu}m$. Cancer cells of PC-3 were cultured and inoculated into the hypodermis of auricle tissues in BALB/c nude mice. We observed tumor formation and growth at the injection region of cancer cells in vivo and obtained the images of tumor mass center and sparse circumferences. On the $5^{th}$ day from an inoculation of cancer cells, histological images of the tumor region using cross-sectional slicing and dye staining of specimens were taken in order to confirm the correlation with the high resolution OCT images. The OCT image of tumor mass compared with normal tissues was analyzed using its A-scan data so as to obtain a tissue attenuation rate which increases according to tumor growth.

  • We construct a four-level system where a metastable state is included in an $Er^{3+}$ Doped Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystal. Because of the action of the coherent field, the traditional light amplification with inversion can be exhibited with remarkable variation. As a result, we propose a method to achieve the gain equalization by atomic coherence. At the same time, we find that the high index of refraction accompanied by vanishing absorption can also be reached in this model. We also find that a higher index of refraction with zero absorption can be easily obtained when the coherent field is off resonance.

  • Theoretical foundations of atom dynamics in laser fields are reviewed in relation with applications to laser spectroscopy, control of atomic motion, atom traps and frequency standards. Quasiclassical kinetic equations are applied to multilevel atomic schemes interacting with counter-propagating laser waves to describe the properties of atomic populations and coherence and the time evolution of atomic distribution function. Basic types of the dipole radiation forces on atoms are discussed for the realistic cases of multilevel dipole interaction schemes such as 3(g)+5(e), 3(g)+3(e), 5(g)+3(e), 5(g)+7(e), 3(g)+3(e)+5(e) and 1(g)+3(g)+3(e)+5(e).

  • Atomic coherences induced by the interaction with light provide new physical properties and optical phenomena. Even though two-photon resonances play important roles in build-up of atomic coherences, only approximate formula for two-photon resonance condition has often been used. In this paper, we present the more accurate two-photon resonance condition and confirm it using numerical simulation. We also studied the effects of laser frequency detuning and intensity on the two-photon resonance .

  • We investigated the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and the Hanle spectrum in a paraffin coated Rb vapor cell. The EIT spectrum was observed in the $F_g=2$, $3{\rightarrow}F_e=3$ transition of the $^{85}Rb$ $D_1$-line by using two independent external cavity diode lasers, and the Hanle spectrum was observed by using one external cavity diode laser in the $\Lambda$-type scheme between the Zeeman sublevels of the $F_g=2{\rightarrow}F_e=1$ transition of the $^{87}Rb$ $D_1$-line. In the Hanle spectrum, we could observe the dual-structured spectrum in the paraffin coated vapor cell. We investigated the dual-structured lineshape by applying an external magnetic field, and varying the direction of the magnetic field. The narrow linewidth of dual-structured EIT was measured to be approximately 200 Hz.
