  • Until now, The Market of aviation parts had led by OEM(Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts because of aviation industry's nature required higher reliability and safety. But recently, The interest about PMA parts in aviation market is increasing continuously with various environmental changes, such as economic stagnation, oil price rise, development of the manufacture technique and newly rising market of Asia-Pacific region. So, this paper introduces the trend and the requirements of FAA PMA / EASA EPA in order to enhance understanding for certification for aviation parts.

But recently, The interest about PMA parts in aviation market is increasing continuously with various environmental changes, such as economic stagnation, oil price rise, development of the manufacture technique and newly rising market of Asia-Pacific region. Actually, after 2006, FAA PMA approval parts are increasing at a rate of around 40,000 parts per year and 2.5% of PMA parts penetration, in 2007, in Asia-Pacific market is forecast to enlarge up to 8% in 2017. So, this paper introduces the process requirements of FAA PMA / EASA EPA and the status of PMA market in order to enhance understanding for certification for aviation parts and to review a new PMA market.

  • Certification by Civil Aviation Law is necessary for aircraft parts and appliances as well as aircraft, engines, and propellers to ensure safety and reliability in operation. Advanced countries in aerospace industry as like U.S.A require Parts Manufacturer Approval for aircraft parts and Technical Standard Order Authorization for designated appliances. However, there are no legal requirements for certification of aircraft parts and appliances in Korea until now. This study presents the draft to revise Civil Aviation Law, which is applicable to set up domestic certification system and maintain it equivalent to U.S. Federal Aviation Regulation.

  • A continuing challenge in the aviation industry is how to safely keep aircraft in service longer with limited maintenance budgets. Therefore, all the advanced countries in aircraft technologies put great efforts in prediction of failure rate in parts and system, but in the domestic aircraft industry is lack of theoretical and experimental research. Prediction of failure rate provides a rational basis for design decisions such as the choice of part quality levels and derating factors to be applied. For these reasons, analytic prediction of failure rate is essential process in developing aircraft structure. In this paper, a procedure for prediction of failure rate for aircraft structural parts is presented. Cargo door kinematic parts are taken to illustrate the process, in which the failure rate for Hook part is computed by using Monte Carlo Simulation along with Response Surface Model, and system failure rate is obtained afterwards.

  • The Technical Standard Order articles are the parts and appliances for which the civil aviation authority designates as it is necessary to standardize for the expedited certification process and aviation safety. TSO articles were used on the type certified aircraft as replacement parts in the early days of TSO authorization system, but those articles are widely used on the newly developed aircraft as well in these days. In this paper, we compared the differences of the TSO authorization systems between FAA and EASA, and proposed the rulemaking items to improve Korean TSO authorization system and to contribute to growth of aviation industry.

  • For the sake of the safety of aircraft, aviation obstacle lights should be installed on the towers of transmission line in accordance with the Aviation Act. At present, the used solar-cell aviation obstacle lights are composed of LED lamp and a regulator, batteries, solar-cells which are divided into four parts. And, the divided four parts are connected by cable. Also, aviation obstacle lights are consisted of 150 LED lamps. therefore, the scale of sollar-cells, batteries and the power consumption of aviation obstacle light is big. For that reason, this paper would introduce the development of the solar-cell type single body LED aviation obstacle using the high brightness LED in order to make aviation obstacle more lightened and small-sized.

  • This study would like to propose a certification of aviation components manufactured through 3D printing. Currently, many types of 3D printers are being used in various industries. Among them, a lot of research is being done in the aviation sector to manufacture drones and aviation components. However, the current level of 3D printer technology and the application of aviation components using it are lacking in many problems and related airworthiness certification standards. Furthermore, clear certification criteria for conformity and coherence are rarely presented. Therefore, we would like to propose matters related to certification of 3D printed equipment for application as aviation components. It is expected that 3D printing equipment will improve precision, reduce defect rate, sagging problem, and bed leveling problem will be solved in the future, and certification standards will be clearly established. In addition, we hope that the reliability of aviation components applied with 3D printing technology will be improved and the relevant certification standards will be further developed.

  • In order to predict the future needs of the aircraft repair parts, each military group develops and applies various techniques to their characteristics. However, the aircraft and the equipped weapon systems are becoming increasingly advanced, and there is a problem in improving the hit rate by applying the existing demand prediction technique due to the change of the aircraft condition according to the long term operation of the aircraft. In this study, we propose a new prediction model based on the conventional time-series analysis technique to improve the prediction accuracy of aircraft repair parts by using machine learning model. And we show the most effective predictive method by demonstrating the change of hit rate based on actual data.
