  • This study is performed to secure the safety of civil aviation by establishing systematic analysis ability of Flight Data Recorder. Through this study, readouting UFDR(Universal Flight Data Recorder) to personal computer, flight data numerical analysis and regulations of Missed Approach. In the analysis, the flight data of B747-400 model aircraft with Missed Approach in San Francisco(KSFO) was selected.

  • The number of civil aviation aircraft registered in Korea has continuously increased. Accordingly the accidents accompanying loss of human or economic resources occurred repeatedly. But the analysis of flight data recorded in FDR was not done by ourselves in the accident investigation because of lack of analysis technology. Therefore, this study is performed to secure the safety of civil aviation by establishing systematic analysis ability of Flight Data Recorder. Through this study, download flight data to personal computer, editing interface file to convert from binary data to engineering data, three dimensional graphical analysis and numerical analysis are performed. For the analysis, the flight of B747-400 model aircraft between Narita(Japan) and Gimpo(Korea) was selected.

  • There are four methods of landing of B747-400 during the crosswind condition. Pilots can choose either one of them. Those are: Sideslip/Wing low, De-Crab during Flare, Touchdown in Crab, Combining Crab and Sideslip. They decide to use one method by what they have learnt before. During the flight, the pilots choose the method, which depends on the weather forecast, and then try to land according to it. However, the weather condition always changes. In other words, the weather during planning and landing can be different, which can provide a difference between the previously expected situation and the actual one. Therefore, it is very important for the pilots to have the situation awareness. This study shows the direction and the prevention to avoid those errors, which are based on actual landing data of B747-400.

  • This study is performed to analyze the turbulence effect by the analysis of the parameters related with flight data of FDR(Flight Data Recorder). In the analysis, the SSFDR(Solid State Flight Data Recorder) flight data of B747-400 and B767-300 model aircraft was selected. Through this study, we verified that turbulence interfere with flight safety because it is modifiable to flight situation and condition of aircraft.

  • Magnitudes of Magnetic field, Electronic field and Microwave was measured during the each stage of flight in the airline operation. The results was much higher than the safety standard and proved to be serious to the cockpit crews on their duty. We also identified that the magnitude of electronic field was much decreased by all three kinds of microwave protection equipments. We recommend that the cockpit crew have to wear the protection clothes to reduce the hazardous effects on their duty and the aircraft manufacturers have to consider the microwave-reduced cockpit in the initial stage of aircraft design.

Evaluation of Fuel Consumption of B747-400 in Short-range Flight with Catapult Assist

  • Recently, the aviation industry has sought to reduce its carbon usage in aircraft operations. Specifically, the industry is proceeding with the development of ultra-large turbofan engines and the development of hybrid electric engines to reduce the fuel consumption of aircraft. In one case, Airbus is developing as its future goal an aircraft with a short take-off distance that uses a catapult. In this study, when a b747-400 aircraft with two of the four engines removed was tested using a catapult, its fuel consumption was compared with that of the original aircraft. Fuel consumption was calculated using the mass flow consumption formula. Further, the aircraft L/D ratio caused by engine removal was interpreted using the CFD Tool, Ansys Fluent. The results showed that the lift ratio was improved by about 7% and that the fuel efficiency was improved by about 14%.

  • In this paper, NRD guide band pass filter with newly designed inductive iris structure is proposed and analyzed with its test results. In case of common NRD guide filter with air gap coupled structure, it was not easy to fabricate and process or each NRD guide dielectric resonator blocks using PTFE. However, in this our research, each dielectric resonator fabricated in a single NRD guide is coupled with inductive iris located on metal plates. The structure is suitable for mass production of a precise and reliable millimeter-wave filter applications. As a result of measurements, designed NRD guide inductive iris filter has superior performance. The pass band is 38.66~39.06 MHz with 400 MHz bandwidth, insertion loss is about 1.4 dB and return loss is below -18 dB.
