  • the microstructure and mechanical properties of seeded and ball-milled dry gels prepared by boehmite sol-gel method were discussed. The densification of seeded gels was improved with increasing seed content namely the number of seed The number of seed was 1.09, 3.35, 5.72${\times}$1012/cm3 boehmite when seeded with 1, 3, 5wt% respectively The ball milled gel contained about 0.5wt% seed and the number of seed was 4.72${\times}$1012/cm3 boehmite. The sintered density of 5wt% seeded gel was below 80% when sintered at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. On the other hand that of ball milled gel was very improved and reached to 97% In the case of 3wt% seeded gels the density over 97% was attained when sintered at 1500$^{\circ}C$for 1h. and the grain of the sintered body was several micrometers in size. However the sintered body of ball milled gel showed grain size of submicrometer when sintered at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. And this specimen showed highest harness value of 1900kg/mm2 The fracture toughness increased with increasing sintering temperature. The sintered body of ball milled gel showed the largest grain size and the highest fracture toughness without regard to sint-ering temperature.

  • Dry gel composed of primary particles more homogeneous than starting boehmite powder was prepared by dispersing and gelling the boehmite powder. The transformation temperatures of boehmite powder, dry gel seeded with 0, 1, 3, 5 wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3, and ball milled gel were 1192$^{\circ}C$, 1184$^{\circ}C$, 1141$^{\circ}C$, 1119$^{\circ}C$, 1117$^{\circ}C$, and 1106$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Sintering behavior of dry gel without seed was similar to that of boehmite powder, but the sintered density of dry gel was improved as much as 10%~15% than boehmite powder. In the case of dry gel seeded with 5 wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3, sintering behavior was much improved. The relative density of the gel seeded with 5 wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3 was 96% when sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. On the other hand, ball milling of the non-seeded sol for 48h resulted in the relative density of 97% when sintered at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The size and amount of $\alpha$-Al2O3 particles added by ball milling were 0.107 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 0.5 wt%.

  • The sonication mettled is widely used with surfactants to suspend individual single-walled carbon nanotubes in solution, and it is well known that sonication-induced tube cutting occurs. Recently, it is found out that ultrasonicated nanotubes yield simultaneous separation by tube length and diameter. Nanotubes that have been cut shortest possess the greatest enrichments of large-diameter species. In this study, single-walled carbon nanotubes are cut using a ball milling method. Similar fracture behavior is observed fur the ball milled nanotubes: i.e., large diameter tubes are cut shorter. The ability to separate carbon nanotubes by diameter and length will contribute to tile development of nanotube-based applications.

  • Pure and stable YAG $(Y_3Al_5O_{12})$ powders were synthesized by a PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) polymer solution technique. PVA was used as an organic carrier for the precursor ceramic gel. The precursor gels were crystallized to YAG at relatively a low temperature of $900\;^{\circ}C$. The synthesized powders, which have nano-sized primary particles, were soft and porous, and the porous powders were ground to sub-micron size by a simple ball milling process. The ball-milled powders were densified to 94% relative density at $1500\;^{\circ}C$ for 1h. In this study, the characteristics of the synthesized YAG powders were examined.

  • Mullite and cordierite were prepared by the sol-gel route. Boehmite, fumed silica and Mg(NO3)2$.$6H2O were their starting materials. Mullite and cordierite powder were mixed by various weight percent. These mixed sols were ball-milled for 48hrs, dried at 100$^{\circ}C$, pressed, cold isostatic pressed and sintered at 1490$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. Mullite-cordierite composites sintered at 1490$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs had>98% of theoretical density. Bending strength of the sintered bodies were 329-249MPa, dielectric constant 7.1-6.7 at 1MHz and thermal expansion coefficient at 800$^{\circ}C$ was matched with Si in the range of 30-35wt% cordierite.

  • Dispersant was used to avoid the agglomeration of aluminum hydrate precipitate and improve the sinterability of calcined alumina powder. The mean particle size of the aluminum hydrate precipitates was 0.26${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 0.44${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ when ball-milled with and without dispersant, respectively. After calcination at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours, the size of the alumina powder without dispersant increased to 0.84${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, while with dispersant slightly decreased to 0.22${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The most thermally active alumina powder was obtained from the sample calcined at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours with the 1% dispersant concentration. Using the calcined alumina powder at the above optimized condition, the specimen showed fired density of 3.94g/㎤, 4-point MOR of 364MPa, and KIC of 3.26MPam1/2 after sintered at 155$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours.

  • Nano-sized ${\beta}$-SiC nanoparticles were synthesized combined with a sol-gel process and a carbothermal process. TEOS and carbon black were used as starting materials for the silicon source and carbon source, respectively. $SiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized using a sol-gel technique (Stober process) combined with hydrolysis and condensation. The size of the particles could be controlled by manipulating the relative rates of the hydrolysis and condensation reactions of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) within the micro-emulsion. The average particle size and morphology of synthesized silicon dioxide was about 100nm and spherical, respectively. The average particles size and morphology of the used carbon black powders was about 20nm and spherical, respectively. The molar ratio of silicon dioxide and carbon black was fixed to 1:3 in the preparation of each combination. $SiO_2$ and carbon black powders were mixed in ethanol and ball-milled for 12 h. After mixing, the slurries were dried at $80^{\circ}C$ in an oven. The dried powder mixtures were placed in alumina crucibles and synthesized in a tube furnace at $1400{\sim}1500^{\circ}C$ for 4 h with a heating rate of $10^{\circ}C$/min under flowing Ar gas (160 cc/min) and furnace cooling down to room temperature. SiC nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, TEM, and SAED. The XRD results showed that high purity beta silicon carbide with excellent crystallinity was synthesized. TEM revealed that the powders are spherical shape nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 15 to 30 nm with a narrow distribution.
