  • We investigate the effect of introduction of the bancassurance system on cost efficiency in the Korean insurance industry between 1997 and 2012. Our estimation results indicate that introduction of this system contributed positively to efficiency of life insurance companies in Korea. Increase in a one standard deviation of bancassurance increases cost efficiency by 0.08 which is equivalent to 12 percent of mean cost efficiency. Recognising that the bancassurance system is a relatively new concept, our results indicate that the bancassurance system can be a policy measure to improve productivity in an emerging insurance market. The results illustrate that positive effects have accrued particularly to medium-sized companies and domestic companies, contrary to the prevailing perception that increased competition through bancassurance is more beneficial to large companies and foreign companies.

  • This paper conducts an empirical analysis on the effects of bancassurance on stability and efficiency of the Korean banking industry. The stability and the efficiency are measured using Z-score and composite functional form based on the annual data of 2000 to 2004 for all domestic banks and insurance companies. The stability test indicates that expansion of bancassurance decreases the stability of banks. Furthermore, the efficiency test implies that with the extension of bancassurance, the cost efficiency declines while revenue efficiency rises, which results in an overall increase of profit efficiency.

  • The objective of this article is to assess the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) implementation on Corporate Brand Value (CBV) and Corporate Financial Performance (CFP). At the same time, the article examines the mediated role of CBV on the relationship between CSR implementation and CFP. In-depth interviews and observation techniques were used in this article on 4 experts to collect qualitative information. Quantitative analysis was based on primary data obtained from 454 employees working at enterprises providing Bancassurance services. The article uses various models of Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and Structural Equation Analysis (SEM) using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 20.0 software. In addition, a 5-point Likert scale is used to measure observed variables. Research results show that CBV plays an intermediate role in the relationship between CSR implementation and CFP. At the same time, the implementation of CSR toward communities, customers, and workers directly impacts CBV and CFP. The article draws a new conclusion; there is no relationship found between the implementation of CSR and CFP. The result proposes implications for the state and Bancassurance service providers to develop and implement CSR-related policies and activities to enhance their brand value and financial performance.

  • This study was conducted to develop core competence model for bancassurance personnel. Prior studies have conducted both FGI and specialist workshops to explore and define the necessary competencies for bancassurance personnel. As a result, 17 such competencies have been identified. A survey involving 105 bancassurance personnel from affiliated banks was conducted to compare perceived importance with retention levels of the aforementioned required competencies. SPSS 20.0, T-test, Borich analysis, and The Locus for Focus model were utilized to confirm education priority and for statistical analysis. The bancassurance personnel competencies that were rated as high in importance and retention were as follows: relationship building, interpersonal understanding, proactive execution of duties, and introspective self-confidence. In chronological order, the educational priorities for the required competencies were found to be as follows: professionalism, proposal capability, achievement orientation, and relationship building.

  • This paper uses the Panzar Rosse model to investigate the competitive conditions in the Korean life insurance companies over the period of 1999 2012. We break down the entire sample period into four distinctive groups and analyze the competitiveness of each period. The results indicate that for the pre-introduction of Bancassurance period, the H-statistic is -1.3984 and the life insurance market is found to be in monopoly or cartel. However, for the post-introduction of Bancassurance period, the H-statistic is 0.9107 and the life insurance market appears to be in monopolistic competition. The results from the introduction of retirement pension system are very similar to those of the introduction of Bancassurance. Overall, the findings indicate that the Korean life insurance market is in long-run equilibrium before the new system introduction, but make adjustments to the new equilibrium.

  • As insurance consumers' needs have been diversified and subdivided, it is increasingly important to grasp their preferences by characteristics and properties. Even though changer in sales channels and marketing conditions of insurance require to analyze what consumers take serious views to purchase, it is difficult to devise marketing strategies since not many concrete studies have been done in this field. A questionnaire survey was carried out to learn detailed information about basic disposition and buying patterns of insurance consumers. Applying efficient statistical techniques and then utilizing a model for securing new customers, this study attempts to explore a plan for rapid growth and successive establishment of bancassurance.

  • The Korean life insurance industry has undergone profound changes, such as the beginning of the variable insurance in July 2001 and the bancassurance enforcement in August 2003. However, little empirical research has analyzed data that includes the bancassurance of life insurance companies operating in Korea. In response to this lack of research, this paper applies DEA (data envelopment analysis) models to measure and decompose their efficiency. We discovered that life insurance companies operating in Korea are a little different in their composition ratio of inputs and outputs, due to the increased variety of distribution channels and new products. We provided efficiency scores, return to scale, and reference frequencies. We also decomposed CCR, BCC, and SBM efficiency into scale efficiency and MIX efficiency. So, we try to investigate whether the sources of inefficiency were caused by the inefficient operation of DMU, disadvantageous conditions, the difference of the composition ratio in inputs and outputs with reference sets, or any combination of the above. Most companies in the sample display had either constant or decreasing returns to scale. The efficiency rankings were less consistent among models and efficient DMUs. In response to this problem, we used the super-efficiency model to rank them and then compared the rankings of the DMUs among the various models. It was also concluded that the availability of panel data, rather than cross-sectional data, would greatly improve the validity of the efficiency estimates.

  • With many changes such as the increase in telemarketing, internet marketing and enforcement of bancassurance, the Korean life insurance companies have undergone a startling transformation. The purpose of this paper is to measure and analyse the static/dynamic efficiency of Korean life insurance companies employing Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA). As the result of the static efficiency analysis, we provide CCR, BCC and scale efficiency, return to scale, and reference set of Korean life insurance companies in 2004. And we also describe about the trend and stability of their efficiency for 7 years(1998-2004) in the dynamic efficiency analysis.
