  • The temperature distribution of high speed tool steel wire/bar during high speed hot rolling procedures has been studied in this study. The tool steels wire/bar show severe temperature gradient during rolling procedures and the temperature of center part much higher than that of the surface. This temperature gradient accumulated after every rolling procedure and the center of rolled wire/bar could be remelt in a certain stage to cause inside defects. In the present study, the temperature distribution was simulated using finite element method and the processing parameters such as rolling speed, cooling condition, has been discussed to prevent the temperature increases of center wire/bar.

  • This study investigated Austenite Grain Size (AGS) distribution in Low-Speed Round-Oval Rolling. Rolling experiments were done along with the AGS numerical modeling to characterize the final AGS distribution and its kinetics behavior. For bar rolling experiment, we utilized the pilot rolling mill, operating at 34 fixed rpm, at POSCO Technical Research Laboratories. To investigate the microstructural observation, the rigid-viscoplastic finite element analysis was combined with Hodgson's AGS evolution model. To consider the transient thermal history in the integrative AGS modeling, additivity rule was introduced. The integrated analysis revealed that static or meta-dynamic recrystallization is responsible for the AGS difference in the inner or outer region of rolled bar. Comparative study showed that the current AGS modeling approach can be used to model the overall AGS distribution in bar rolling processes. For more accurate AGS prediction, the AGS modeling method should be verified under the various rolling conditions such as different rolling speeds and different deformations.

  • A batch process in which transfer bars are rolled in single bar units involves many problems in terms of quality, yield and threading stability. The endless rolling process is an effective solution to such problems. In this, study, an analysis model is proposed to calculate the distribution of normal stress in endless rolling process. The model was examined by comparing with the result of experiment. A device using the spring is developed for improving the welding quality.

  • The objective of this study is to adjust the roll gap for the dimension accuracy of bar in hot bar rolling process considering roll wear. In this study hot bar rolling processes for round and oval passes have been investigated. In order to predict the roll wear, the wear model is reformulated as an incremental form and then wear depth of roll is calculated at each deformation step on contact area using the results of finite element analysis, such as relative sliding velocity and normal pressure at contact area. Archard's wear model was applied to predict the roll wear. To know the effects of thermal softening of DCI (Ductile Cast Iron) roll material according to operating conditions, high temperature micro hardness test is executed and a new wear model has been proposed by considering the thermal softening of DCI roll expressed in terms of the main tempering curve. The new technique developed in this study for adjusting roll gap can give more systematically and economically feasible means to improve the dimension accuracy of bar with full usefulness and generality.

  • In this study, a systematic approach for roll pass design in bar rolling was studied. To minimize the trial and errors in the process design, a roll CAD system and a FE analysis system were combined. Based on the system, a methodology for roll pass design by FEM was studied. At first, designed process was compared with the FE analysis results and process redesign based on the FEM results was performed to obtain the specified final geometry. Then, empirical formula for roll speed set-up was compared with the FE analysis results. Further study on various simulations for bar rolling will help in making up for the inaccuracy in the currently used empirical roll speed rules. In addition, verification of the accuracy of the FE analysis system must be performed using experimental data in the industry.

  • In this paper, a method for prediction of spread is proposed to design proper roll profile taking into account spread in shape rolling of angle bar. The effect of the process variables on spread, such as draught ratio, bending angle and aspect ratio, is analyzed by FE-analysis and response surface method (RSM). Roll profiles for equal angle bar are designed with the spread predicted by the regression equation. Effectiveness of the designed roll profiles are verified by FE-analysis in which the flange length, strain distribution, mean strain and roll torque are compared with those by Geuze. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the design of roll profile for unequal angle bar. As a result, the final product can be obtained within the allowable tolerance of ${\pm}0.5mm$ in length. Therefore, it is found that the prediction of spread can improve the efficiency of design roll profile in shape rolling of angle bar.

  • A new on-line bar joining technology employing the concept of a solid-state joining has been developed for the endless rolling by POSCO, RIST and MHMM Inc.. In the process, the bars are partially descaled, partially overlapped, joined by shearing action and crops are finally removed. The feasibility of the developed process was evaluated in this study in terms of microstructures and mechanical properties of joints, and the response of the joint to rolling.

  • The primary objectives of the rolling process are to reduce the cross section of the incoming material while improving its properties and to obtain the desired section at the exit from the rolls. Many engineering metals, suchas aluminium alloys, copper alloys, and steels are often cast intoingots and are then further processed byhot rolling into blooms, slabs, and billets, which are subsequently rolled into other products such as plate, sheet, tube, rod, bar, and structural shapes. In shape rolling a round or square bar is rolled in several passes into various shapes. During eachpass, the bar elongates as well as spreads. Thus, a very complex three-dimensional metal flow takes place. In this paper TASKS results for the simulation of a 7 pass square-to-round shape rolling are presented. The results are verified by comparing it with experimental results from a previous study conducted at the Battelle Columbus Labs
