  • An experimental work was carried out to study the effect of hybrid fiber on the tension stiffening and cracking characteristics of geopolymer concrete (GPC). A total of 24 concentrically reinforced concrete specimens were cast and tested under uniaxial tension. The grade of concrete considered was M40. The variables mainly consist of the volume fraction of crimped steel fibers (0.5 and 1.0%) and basalt fibers (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3%). The load deformation response was recorded using LVDT's. At all the stages of loading after the first cracking, crack width and crack spacing were measured. The addition of fibers in hybrid form significantly improved the tension stiffening effect. In this study, the combination of 0.5% steel fiber and 0.2% basalt fiber gave a better comparison than the other combinations.

  • Although the basalt fiber has superior fire-resistance and chemical resistance, it has many disadvantages in its applications. Generally, the tensile and loop strengths of basalt fiber were decreased with generated frictional heat during industial appplications. To solve this problem, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating system was introduced and a sutable coating condition was evaluated. The basalt fiber was pre-treated with triethoxytrifluoropropylsilane (TMTFPS) at various pHs and then coated with PTFE dispersions with penetrating agent sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfo succinate (DOS-Na) to increase the tensile and loop strengths as well as to reduce the fibril during working. A universial testing machine (Instron Model 3366) was used to measure tensile and loop strengths. When the PTFE dispersion with 0.25 wt% of DOS-Na was coated on the surface of basalt fiber after pre-treating with 5 wt% of PTFE, the highest tensile and loop strengths were reached to 3.5 gf/D and 2.4 gf/D, respectively.

  • As interest in the eco-friendly ships and lightweight equipment is increasing in the shipbuilding and marine industry, composite materials are applied to equipment such as pipes. In this study, a basalt fiber reinforced furan composite (BFC), an eco-friendly material, was manufactured to apply the pipe insulation cover that requires environment-friendly and heat/flame retardant performance. An optimization study of post-curing conditions of BFC was conducted, and experiments and analysis were performed on mechanical strength, heat/flame retardant properties, and affinity properties. Finally, as a result of the study BFC material is proved to be a good candidate to apply pipe insulation cover.

  • This study was evaluated that fundamental quality properties in the mortar level, as part of a basic study for development of fiber reinforced concrete using basalt fiber. Mortar mixtures used in the experiments used the mortar using cement only and high volume fly ash mortar using fly ash of 50%, was evaluated by comparison. As a experiments results, high volume fly ash mortar using 50% fly ash was effective for improving fiber dispersibility than mortar using cement only, accordingly, it showed that fiber aggregation phenomenon has been greatly reduced. In addition, if the fly ash used much more than 50%, the compressive strength has been shown to decrease of about 30%, fiber length and mixing ratio of basalt fiber was found to have a greater effect on flow properties than mechanical properties.

  • The membrane structure provides high satisfaction with lightweight, improved workability, reduced cost, and a free shape. Thus, its applications expanding. On the other hand, in an architectural membrane that is vulnerable to fire, the development of various architectural membranes with flame resistance is in demand. Therefore, this study applied basalt woven fabric safety for flame resistance, excellent heat insulation and thermal properties on an architectural membrane. The PTFE- coated basalt woven fabric membrane was compared with a PTFE coated glass fiber membrane by DSC/TGA, strength properties, flammability, and incombustibility properties. In addition, this study confirmed the membrane applicability of basalt woven fabric and basalt-glass hybrid woven fabric through a comparison with existing architectural membranes.

  • Generally, strength degradation is caused by the absorption of moisture in composites. For this reason, a fracture is generated in the composites and traces of glass fiber degrade human health and physical damage is generated. Therefore, in this research, we studied the mechanical properties change of composites by moistureabsorption. The composites were manufactured with and without the Gel-coating process and were immersed in a moisture absorption device at $80^{\circ}C$ for more than 100 days. The mechanical properties of the moistureabsorption composites and the composites which dry after moisture-absorption were compared. The mechanical properties degradation of basalt fiber composites according to the result of the measurement of moistureabsorption was smaller than that of glass fiber composites by about 20%. In addition, the coefficient of moisture absorption was lower for the case of Gel-coating processing than the composites without the Gel-coating process by about 2% and it was deduced that Gel-coating did not have a significant effect on the mechanical properties.

  • The membrane structure is being applied in structures for various uses for its many advantages as permeableness, lightweightness, constructability, resource saving, and management cost reduction, and the usage is being expanded. However, despite the development of membrane structure, the standard for architectural membrane performance that considered fire safety is still inadequate. Therefore, this study applied basalt fiber with flame resistance on architectural membrane. Also, this study confirmed the membrane applicability of basalt fiber through comparison with existing architectural membrane.
