The statistical model was introduced to satisfy various experimental condition on the sorption of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn) by bentonite. The Box-Behnken model designed statistically was applied to determine relative impact among three variables such as pH, HCO$_3$ contents and heavy metal concentrations on the sorption. The SAS program was used to obtain the statistical solution. The statistical surface response analysis indicates that initial concentration of heavy metals and pH have an important effect on the sorption, and bicarbonate is not a serious variable. The sorption capability about heavy metals of bentonite is in the order of Pb>Cu>Zn>Cd. The precipitation as hydroxyl and carbonate complexes of heavy metals was thermodynamically analyzed as major mechanism of sorption under alkaline pHs and high bicarbonate solution. It was found that there is a little difference between the model prediction on the precipitation of heavy metals and the results of batch sorption experiment. The thermodynamic data of the programs have to revise to obtain the best fit condition between the model prediction and the experimental results.
The main form of nitrogen fertilizer applied to lowland rice is urea, but little is known about its transport in waterlogged soil. This study was conducted to investigate the transport of urea in waterlogged soil column using WAVE (simulation of the substances Water and Agrochemicals in the soil, crop and Vadose Environment) model which includes the parameters for urea adsorption and hydrolysis, The adsorption distribution coefficient and hydrolysis rate of urea were measured by batch experiments. A transport experiment was carried out with the soil column which was pre-incubated for 45 days under flooded condition. The urea hydrolysis rate (k) was $0.073h^{-1}$. Only 5% of the applied urea remained in soil column at 4 days after urea application. The distribution coefficient ($K_d$) of urea calculated from adsorption isotherm was $0.21Lkg^{-1}$, so it was assumed that urea that urea was a weak-adsorbing material. The maximum concentration of urea was appeared at the convective water front because transport of mobile and weak-adsorbing chemicals, such as urea, is dependent on water convective flow. The urea moved down to 11 cm depth only for 2 days after application, so there is a possibility that unhydrolyzed urea could move out of the root zone and not be available for crops. A simulated urea concentration distribution in waterlogged soil column using WAVE model was slightly different from the measured concentration distribution. This difference resulted from the same hydrolysis rate applied to all soil depths and overestimated hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient. In spite of these limitations, the transport of urea in waterlogged soil column could be predict with WAVE model using urea hydrolysis rate (k) and distribution coefficient ($K_d$) which could be measured easily from a batch experiment.

Recently, several studies have been conducted on biogas and organic compost production using food waste in an anaerobic digester. In this study, basic experiments were conducted to produce biogas and compost by fermenting food wastes with microbial agents. First, a microbial agent was developed by combining various microorganisms. Then, the amount of generated biogas was identified through a food waste batch experiment. Further, we could maximize and demonstrate biogas production in an anaerobic digester by examining biogas production and composting in a pilot plant.
The sorption behavior of some typical fission products such as Cs-137, long-lived radionuclide; Ce-144, rare-earth element; and Co-60, corrosion product on zeolite A, zeolite F-9 (faujasite) and amorphous zeolite was determined with the salt concentrations, 0.01 M- to 2.0 M- nitric acid and ammonium nitrate, and the shaking time, 15 minutes interval from 15 minute to 90 minute. Kd values were obtained through the batch experiment. In conclusion, the optimal conditions for isolation and removal of the typical radionuclides are as following: zeolite, amorphous zeolite; concentration, $0.01\;M-HNO_3\;and\;0.1\;M-NH_4NO_3$; pH4; shaking time, one hour; the most effective species, Cs-137.
Both lactic acid productivity and cell growth were linearly correlated with yeast extract supplementation in batch fermentation. During conventional continuous operation, although fresh feed was introduced into the bioreactor with a significantly low dilution rate (0.04 $h^{-1}$), the amount of yeast extract employed was not enough to maintain the growth of microorganism. However, when the fresh feed contained 100 g/l glucose and 2 g/l yeast extract during cell-recycle continuous operation at a dilution rate of 0.04 $h^{-1}$, more than 90 g/l lactic acid was continuously produced, with the average productivity of 3.72 $g/l{\cdot}h$. In this experiment, 82 g of yeast extract (77% of reduction yield) could be reduced for the production of 1 kg of lactic acid compared with batch fermentation of a similar volumetric productivity.
In this study, the effects of starvation on floc characteristics when treating saline wastewater using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) were investigated. The effectiveness over 5 days of starvation for aerobic and non-aerobic strategies for maintaining the physical characteristics of floc-forming sludge and the recovery period needed to regain the initial pollutant removal efficiency were investigated. Experiment results revealed that the sludge volume index (SVI) increased and the floc size and fractal dimension decreased after starvation under both aerobic and non-aerobic conditions. Sludge settleability deteriorated faster under aerobic conditions compared to non-aerobic conditions. Under non-aerobic conditions, the SBR required less time to return to its initial pollutant removal efficiency and settleability. Floc size, fractal dimension, and SVI were observed to be fairly correlated with each other. The results demonstrated that it was better to maintain the sludge under non-aerobic rather than aerobic starvation, because it adapted to, resisted starvation and had a quicker re-start afterward.

Importance of anaerobic digestion as an energy generating device has been increased as fuel shortage becomes serieous. Several modification methods on the conventional digesters including Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) addition and two-phase digestion were studied to enhance the gas production. This study investigated the effects of PAC on anaerobic digestion of chicken manure in terms of gas production and sludge stabilization. As a first experiment, an optimum PAC dose for efficient gas production was determined in a batch test. In semi-continuous experiments, an optimum Sludge Retention Time (SRT) at that PAC concentration and an overall substate utilization rate coefficient were investigated. A portion of gas increased by PAC addition was estimated using a substrate utilization rate coefficient of microorganisms attached on PAC. This test was performed in batch experiments using acetic acid as a substrate. The digesters for all experiments were kept 35${\pm}$ 1˚C in a heated water bath. Mixing was performed manually once a day and the produced gas was collected for daily reading. The following conclusions were made for this study. 1. Cptimum PAC concentration was 5% total solids, where gas production rate was increased by 20 percents. 2. Optimum SRT was 7.5 days. 3. Substrate utilization rate coefficient of microorganisms attached on PAC was about twice as much as that of suspended ones.

An experiment was conducted in order to investigate gasification characteristics of rice husks in a fixed bed, which was a pre-step to design a continuous gasification system. Two air supply levels for gasification were chosen and their effects on the producer gas amount and producer gas composition were discussed. The main components of the producer gas were CO, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $H_2$ and THC (Total HydroCarbon). As airflow rate decreased, more producer gas was produced. The peak amount of CO, $H_2$ and THC were 28%, 7.5% and 0.68% in volume when constant airflow rate of $3.36\;m^3/s$ was used in the batch operation. About 4.5 kg of ash (9%) and condensed water including tars of 6 kg (11%) were produced from 50 kg rice husks in the gasification. Excluding the byproducts, all rice husks seemed to be transformed into producer gas. This gasification study was conducted prior to developing a continuous gasification system for biomass including agricultural byproducts.
A batch and a continuous type experiments were conducted to test the conditions for simultaneous phosphorus release and uptake, and denitrification, taking place in one process. The bacteria able to denitrify as well as to remove phosphorus were evaluated for the application to biological nutrient removal(BNR) process. In the batch-type experiment, simultaneous reactions of phosphorus release and uptake, and also denitrification were observed under anoxic condition with high organic and nitrate loading. However the rate and the degree of P release were lower than that occurred under anaerobic condition. BNR processes composed of anaerobic-anoxic-oxic(AXO), anoxic-anaerobic-oxic(XAO) and anoxic-oxic(XO) were operated in continuous condition. The anoxic reactors in each process received nitrate loading. In the AXO process, P release in anaerobic reactor and the luxury uptake in oxic reactor proceeded actively regardless to nitrate loading. However in XAO and XO processes, P release and luxury uptake occurred only with the nitrate loading less than $0.07\;kg{NO_3}^--N$/kgMLSS-d. With higher nitrate load, P release increased and the luxury uptake decreased. Therefore, it appeared that the application of denitrifying phosphorus-removing bacteria (DPB) to BNR process must first resolve the problem with decrease of luxury uptake of phosphorus in oxic reactor.

This study investigated the applicability of manganese coated media such as manganese coated sand (MCS), manganese coated sericite (MCSe) and manganese coated starfish material calcined at $550^{\circ}C$ (MCSf) to remove Mn(II) in synthetic wastewater. Manganese coated media prepared at different pH was applied in the treatment of soluble Mn(II) in batch and column experiments at various Mn(II) concentrations. The amount of Mn coated on three different media was approximately 800~1100 mg/kg. From the stability test, negligible dissolution of Mn was observed above pH 3.0. In batch test, more than 40% of Mn(II) was removed by all sand media at various manganese concentrations. In order to see the effect of additional oxidant for the removal of Mn(II), 4 mg/L of hypochlorite was added in Mn(II) solution during column experiment. Breakthrough of Mn(II) was greatly retarded in the presence of hypochlorite in all column reactors packed with different media. Among the manganese coated media, MCSf prepared at pH 4 indicated the highest removal capacity. The removal efficiency of Mn(II) was also increased in the multi-layer system (0.5 g of MCS, MCSe, and MCSf each).
