잔류 열 변형을 고려한 평판형 압전 복합재료 유니모프 작동기의 해석 (Analysis of a Plate-type Piezoelectric Composite Unimorph Actuator Considering Thermal Residual Deformation)

  • The actuating performance of plate-type unimorph piezoelectric composite actuators having various stacking sequences was evaluated by three dimensional finite element analysis on the basis of thermal analogy model. Thermal residual stress distribution at each layer in an asymmetrically laminated plate with PZT ceramic layer and thermally induced dome height were predicted using classical laminated plate theory. Thermal analogy model was applied to a bimorph cantilever beam and LIPCA-C2 actuator in order to confirm its validity. Finite element analysis considering thermal residual deformation showed that the bending behavior of piezoelectric composite actuator subjected to electric loads was significantly different according to the stacking sequence, thickness of constituent PZT ceramic and boundary conditions. In particular, the increase of thickness of PZT ceramic led to the increase of the bending stiffness of piezoelectric composite actuator but it did not always lead to the decrease of actuation distance according to the stacking sequences of piezoelectric composite actuator. Therefore, it is noted that the actuating performance of unimorph piezoelectric composite actuator is rather affected by bending stiffness than actuation distance.

  • In this study, various damage modes in bending unimorph piezoelectric composite actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate during bending fracture tests have been evaluated by monitoring acoustic emission (AE) signals in terms of waveform and peak frequency as well as AE parameters. Three kinds of actuator specimens consisting of woven fabric fiber skin layers and a PZT ceramic core layer are loaded with a roller and an AE activity from the specimen is monitored during the entire loading using an AE transducer mounted on the specimen. AE characteristics from a monolithic PZT ceramic with a thickness of $250{\mu}m$ are examined first in order to distinguish different AE signals from various possible damage modes in piezoelectric composite actuators. Post-failure observations and stress analyses in the respective layers of the specimens are conducted to identify particular features in the acoustic emission signal that correspond to specific types of damage modes. As a result, the signal classification based on waveform and peak frequency analyses successfully describes the failure process of the bending piezoelectric composite actuator exhibiting diverse failure mechanisms. Furthermore, it is elucidated that when the PZT ceramic embedded actuators are loaded mechanical bending loads, the failure process of actuator specimens with different lay-up configurations is almost same irrespective of their lay-up configurations.

  • This study presents the static and dynamic actuating performances of a bending piezoelectric actuator with a thin sandwiched PZT plate under a static load. The stored elastic energy within the actuators which occurs during a curing process is obtained through a flexural bending test. An actuating performance is evaluated in terms of an actuating displacement at the simply supported condition. The results reveal that an actuator that consists of a top layer having a high elastic modulus and a low coefficient of thermal expansion exhibits a better performance than the rest of actuators due to the formation of the large stored elastic energy within the actuator system. When actuators are excited at the alternating current voltage, the effect of PZT ceramic softening results in a slight reduction in the resonance frequency of each actuator as the applied electric field increases. It is thus suggested that the static and dynamic actuating characteristics of bending piezoelectric actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate should be simultaneously considered in controlling their performances.

  • This article describes the load capability of bending piezoelectric actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate in association with the stored elastic energy induced by an increased dome height after a curing process. The stored elastic energy within the actuators is obtained via a flexural mechanical bending test. The load capability is evaluated indirectly in terms of an actuating displacement with a load of mass at simply supported and fixed-free boundary conditions. Additionally, a free displacement under no load of mass is measured for a comparison with an actuating displacement. The results reveal that an actuator with a top layer having a high elastic modulus and a low coefficient of thermal expansion exhibits a better performance than the rest of actuators in terms of free displacement as well as actuating displacement due to the formation of the large stored elastic energy within the actuator system. When actuators are excited at AC voltage, the actuating displacement is rather higher than the free displacement for the same actuating conditions. In addition, the effect of PZT ceramic softening results in a slight reduction in the resonance frequency of each actuator as the applied electric field increases.   • The actuating performance test of plate-type piezoelectric composite actuators having different lay-up sequences was experimentally carried out at simply supported and fixed-free boundary conditions. The actuating displacement of manufactured plate-type piezoelectric composite actuator (PCA) was measured using a non-contact laser displacement measurement system. Our results revealed that the actuating displacement with increasing applied electric field at a drive frequency of 1Hz increased non-linearly at the simply supported boundary condition whereas it almost linearly increased at the fixed-free boundary condition. On the other hand, the actuating displacement of piezoelectric composite actuator depended on the applied electric field in a drive frequency range from 1Hz to 10Hz, but its behavior was different in higher drive frequencies beyond 15Hz due to the occurrence of resonance. On the basis of the above experimental results, the bending characteristics of PCAs revealed different behavior depending on applied electric fields, drive frequencies as well as boundary conditions. Therefore, by investigating drive frequencies together with applied electric fields, actuating performance can be easily controlled and PCAs which were fabricated for this study will be sufficiently applied to pumping devices.

  • In the present work, we address electric fatigue behavior in bending piezoelectric actuators using an acoustic emission technique. Electric cyclic fatigue tests have been performed up to ten million cycles on the fabricated specimens. To confirm the fatigue damage onset and its pathway, the source location and distributions of the AE behavior in terms of count rate are analyzed over the fatigue range. It is concluded that electric cyclic loading leads to fatigue damages such as transgranular damages and intergranular cracking in the surface of the PZT ceramic layer, and intergranular cracking even develops into the PZT inner layer, thereby degrading the displacement performance. The electric-induced fatigue behavior seems to show not a continuous process but a step-by-step process because of the brittleness of PZT ceramic. Nevertheless, this fatigue damage and cracking do not cause the final failure of the bending piezoelectric actuator loaded up to 107 cycles. Investigations of the AE behavior and the linear AE source location reveal that the onset time of the fatigue damage varies considerably depending on the existence of a glass-epoxy protecting layer.

  • The aim of this research is to evaluate the relationship between the total effective moment $(M^E)$ and Bemoulli-Euler bending moment (M) when the ply orientations of UD CFRP in Piezoelectric Zirconate Titanate Composite Actuator (PZTCA) are changed. The obtained results as follows. Firstly, as the performance test results by the CFRP ply orientation, the performance of [0] and [90] were stable. However, while the performance of [+45] was suddenly decreased after 5 hours. Secondly, the change of $M^E$ by the CFRP ply orientation was evaluated. As the CFRP ply orientation was increased from [0] to [+60], the $M^E$ were gradually decreased. However, they became a little bit increased from [+60] to [90]. Finally, after the change of M by the CFRP ply orientation was evaluated, it was found that $M^E=2.2M$ was valid for just [0] and that there was a relationship between $M^E$ and M according to the ply orientation.

  • 본 논문에서는 굽힘하중이 가해지는 스마트 복합재 적층판의 자유단에서 발생하는 박리응력을 압전 작동기를 이용해서 감소시키는 방법을 응력함수를 이용해 해석하는 방법을 제안하였다. 전기-기계 연성에 의해 나타나는 지배방정식은 최소 보족일의 원리를 이용해 구하였다. 응력상태는 일반적인 고유치 해석과정을 통해 구하였다. 스마트 복합재 적층판의 자유단 박리응력은 압전 작동기를 이용해 감소시킬 수 있었다. cross-ply 복합재 적층판의 박리응력 감소가 angle-ply 복합재 적층판 보다 크게 나타났다.

Static analysis of a multilayer piezoelectric actuator with bonding layers and electrodes

  • Based on the theory of piezoelasticity, an analytical solution for a typical multilayer piezoelectric composite cantilever is obtained by the Airy function method. The piezoelectric cantilever may consist of any number of layers. Moreover, the material and thickness for different layers may be different. The solution obtained in the present paper is concise and can be easily applied for the bending analysis of multilayer piezoelectric actuators considering the effect of bonding layers and electrodes. At last, a comprehensive parametric study is conducted to show the influence of electromechanical coupling (EMC), the number of piezoelectric layers, the elastic modulus of elastic layer and the thickness ratio on the bending behavior of actuators. Some interesting results for the design of multilayer piezoelectric actuators are presented.

  • The present paper describes the vibration control experiment of composite plates with bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator. The system is modeled as two degree-of-freedom system using modal coordinates and the system parameters are obtained from vibration tests. Kalman filter is adopted for extracting modal coordinates from sensor signal, and control algorithms applied to the system are Linear Quadratic Gaussian(LQG) control, Bang-Bang Control (BBC), Negative Velocity Feedback(NVF), Proportional Derivative Control(PDC). From observation of the spillover and control perfomance, it is concluded that a higher order control algorithm such as LQG rather than BBG, NVF, PDC is suitable for efficient simultaneous control of both bending and twisting modes of composite plates.
