  • To select a promising technologies for removal of odorous gases emitted from a wastewater pump station, four methods such as activated carbon (A/C) adsorption, chemical absorption (acid and alkali scrubber), and two biofilters (polyurethane (PU) and worm cast) were investigated. The average odor removal efficiencies in the PU biofilter and A/C column was over 98%, but in a worm cast biofilter and chemical absorption were below 60-80%. The removal efficiency of PU biofilter was very stable (about 98-99%) in the range of retention times of 4-36s, and a maximum elimination capacity was $1.6${\times}$10^{ 7}$ $OUm^{-3}$$h^{-1}$ Deodorization costs for an activated carbon adsorption and a biofiltration method were investigated. With increasing odor intensity, the operating cost of the A/C column increased linearly, but the operating cost of the biofilteration increased slightly. The capital cost in a biofilter is about two times higher than that in an A/C column, but the operating cost is very lower than that of in A/C column. In conclusion, the biofiltration was evaluated one of the most promising technologies to control odor in a wastewater pump station.

  • The present study examines the influence of slurry composting and biofiltration liquid fertilizer (SCBLF) treatment on the biomass characteristics of yellow poplar, and the optimization of organosolv pretreatment for sugar production. After SCBLF treatment, total exchangeable cation contents of yellow poplar was increased from $3.1g\;kg^{-1}$ to $4.4g\;kg^{-1}$, and as a result, biomass production of yellow poplar was also enhanced by 82.3%. Organosolv pretreatment was conducted with three independent variables: 1) reaction temperature: $133.2^{\circ}C$ to $166.8^{\circ}C$; 2) acid concentration: 0.2% to 1.8%; and 3) reaction time: 1.6 min to 18.4 min. Reaction temperature was the most significant variable in water insoluble solid (WIS) recovery rate. High overall sugar yield was attained from pretreatment conditions approximately 50% of WIS recovery rate, and the highest overall glucose yield (44.0%) was achieved from pretreatment at $140^{\circ}C$ with 1.5% acid concentration for 5 min. Consequently, 21.1% of glucose and 5.8% of xylose were produced from the organosolv pretreatment of SCBLF-treated 8-year-old yellow poplar.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of growth and fruiting in chestnut trees by SCB (Slurry Compostion and Biofilteration) liquid fertilizer instead of Chemical fertilizer. The experiment was done between April, 2008 and September, 2009, using seven years old grafting trees 'Tsukuba'. Fertilizer treatment was designed as follows; SCB liquid fertilizer, chemical fertilizer, organic fertilizers and no fertilized. Results were as follows; In the 2nd year, height and basal diameter gain of 8.04% and 25.90% over than the 1st year by SCB liquid fertilizer. The number of burrs per bearing mother branch showed no significant increment by SCB liquid fertilizer but fruiting rate was higher than other treatments. These results indicated that the SCB liquid fertilizer has a value of new eco-friendly fertilizer.

  • Sawdust biofiltration is an emerging bio-technology for control of ammonia emissions including compost odors from composting of biological wastes. Although sawdust is widely used as a medium for bulking agent in composting system and for microbial attachment in biofiltration systems, the performance of agitated bed composting and sawdust biofiltration are not well established. A pilot-scale composting of hog manure amended with sawdust and sawdust biofiltration systems for practical operation were investigated using aerated and agitated rectangular reactor with compost turner and sawdust biofilter operated under controlled conditions, each with a working capacity of approximately $40m^3\;and\;4.5m^3$ respectively. These were used to investigate the effect of compost temperature, seed germination rate and the C/N ratio of the compost on ammonia emissions, compost maturity and sawdust biofiltration performance. Temperature profiles showed that the material in three runs had been reached to temperature of 55 to $65^{\circ}C$ and above. The ammonia concentration in the exhaust gas of the sawdust biofilter media was below the maximum average value as 45 ppm. Seed germination rate levels of final compost was maintained from 70 to 93% and EC values of the finished compost varied between 2.8 and 4.8 ds/m, providing adequate conditions for plant growth.

  • The removals of TCE and PCE vapor with or without a supply of toluene as a primary substrate were compared in a biofiltration process, and the variations of microbial communities associated with the removal were also investigated. As a result of investigations on the removals of TCE/PCE in a biofilter B within which TCE/PCE-acclimated sludge was attached on the surface of media without a supply of primary substrate, and those in another biofilter A where toluene-acclimated sludge was attached with a supply of toluene as a primary substrate, followings were found: (i) parts of microbes responsible to the decomposition of toluene vapor participate in the removal of chlorinated VOCs such as TCE and PCE, and (ii) effective biological removals of TCE and PCE vapor do not necessarily need cometabolism. Sequencing of 16S rDNA obtained from the band profile of DGGE (Denaturating Gradient Gel Electrophoresis), it was confirmed that: (i) uncultured alpha proteobacterium, uncultured Desulfitobacterium, uncultured Rhodobacteraceae bacterium, Cupriavidus necator, and Pseudomonas putida were found to be toluene-decomposing microbes, (ii) alpha proteobacterium HTCC396 is a TCE-removing microbe, (iii) Desulfitobacterium sp. is a PCE-decomposing microbe, and (iv) particularly, uncultured Desulfitobacterium sp. is probably a microbe decomposable not only toluene but also various chlorinated VOC vapor including TCE and PCE.

  • The study aim was to analyze the effects of slurry composting and biofiltration (SCB) liquid fertilization on the early growth of Chamaecyparis obtusa. Control, chemical fertilizer (CF), low liquid fertilizer (LLF), and high liquid fertilizer (HLF) sites with five trees per site were established, and each treatment was repeated three times. The growth analysis showed that HLF-200 (treated with HLF 200%) had the highest growth. To assess the fertilization effect, root-collar diameter and height growth models were developed for the HLF-200 and control groups. We found that the Schumacher anamorphic and Schumacher polymorphic equations were best suited for the root-collar diameter growth models in the control and HLF-200 groups, respectively. For the height growth models, the Gompertz polymorphic equation was the most appropriate. From the growth curve generated by the chosen model, the effect of fertilization on the amount and rate of the root-collar diameter and height growth were higher in the HLF-200 group than in the control group. Treatment with SCB liquid fertilization was judged to be suitable for the early growth stage of Chamaecyparis obtusa.
