  • Signal complexity is one point of view to analyze the biological signal. It arises as a result of the physiological signal produced by biological systems. Signal complexity can be used as a method in extracting the feature for a biological signal to differentiate a pathological signal from a normal signal. In this research, Hjorth descriptors, one of the signal complexity measurement techniques, were measured on signal sub-band as the features for lung sounds classification. Lung sound signal was decomposed using two wavelet analyses: discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and wavelet packet decomposition (WPD). Meanwhile, multi-layer perceptron and N-fold cross-validation were used in the classification stage. Using DWT, the highest accuracy was obtained at 97.98%, while using WPD, the highest one was found at 98.99%. This result was found better than the multi-scale Hjorth descriptor as in previous studies.

  • In cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI), heart and respiratory motions are one of main obstacles in obtaining diagnostic quality of images. To synchronize CMRI to the physiological motions, ECG and respiratory gatings are commonly used. In this paper multi-biological signal (ECG, respiratory, and SPO2) based smart trigger system is proposed. By using multi-biological signal, the proposed system is robust to the induced noise such as eddy current when gradient pulsing is continuously applied during the examination. Digital conversion of the multi-biological signal makes the system flexible in implementing smart and intelligent algorithm to detect cardiac and respiratory motion and to reject arrhythmia of the heart. The digital data is used for real-time trigger, as well as signal display, and data storage which may be used for retrospective signal processing.

  • We have developed a microprogramir!able signal processor for real-time ultrasonic signal processing. Processing speed was increased by the parallelism in horizontal microprogram using 104bits microcode and the Pipelined architecture. Control unit of the signal processor was designed by microprogrammed architec- ture and writable control store (WCS) which was interfaced with host computer, APPLE- ll . This enables the processor to develop and simulate various digital signal processing algorithms. The performance of the processor was evaluated by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) program. The execution time to perform 16 bit 1024 points complex FF7, radix-2 DIT algorithm, was about 175 msec with IMHz master Clock. We can use this processor to Bevelop more efficient signal processing algorithms on the biological signal processing.

  • We tested the capability of Pointwise Correlation Dimension(PD2), Approximate Entropy (ApEn) and LZ complexity, as alternative measures of a biological signal. For this purpose, we analyzed standard data and a healthy child's 24-hour heart rate variability. Our conclusion is as follows. First, PD2, ApEn and LZ complexity can be used for discerning chaotic attractor, white noise, and periodic signal. Second, these measures show different characteristics on day and night. Third, these measures can be used for detecting time-varying characteristics of biological signals.

  • In this paper, the real-time compressed code generation method for the biological signal data, especially for the Electrocardiogram, is studied. For this purpose, variable length code is introduced. And from this code, we get a exactly the same reconstructed signal data as the original. Experimental results show that this program reduces the data rate by a factor of about 8, and codes the result in a form convenient for analysis.

  • In this paper, we present a signal analysis workstation in which the user can scrutinize and quantify biological signals, observe the effects of various signal processing algorithms on them, and eventually get some interpretation of clinical use. Within the system, the user can also access all the information in the central data base, such as patient personal information, biological signal information, and insert his interpretation results obtained into the data base after his careful observation. The software system is designed in an object-oriented paradigm, and written in C++ as a window-based application program.

  • Signal peptides of secretary proteins interact with various membranes and non-membrane components during the translocation. We investigated the interaction of signal peptides of ribose binding protein (RBP) with Escherichia coli (E.coli) signal recognition particle (SRP), SecA and lipid bilayer. Previous studies showed that the functional signal peptides inhibit the GTPase activity of E.coli SRP which consisted of F로 and 4.5S RNA.(omitted)

  • Secreted proteins and membrane proteins play key roles in the formation, differentiation, and maintenance of multicellular organisms. In this study, we undertook to characterize these protein types in the central nervous system of the marine snail Aplysia kurodai using a yeast-based signal sequence trap method. One hundred and three cDNA clones were obtained by screening 300,000 clones from the signal sequence trap cDNA library. Of these, twelve were identical to previously identified Aplysia genes, 19 were related to known proteins in other organisms, and 54 clones were novel. These 54 new genes had high signal peptide scores or were found likely to contain a transmembrane domain sequence. Only 18 of the 103 clones proved to be false positive. The study demonstrates that the signal sequence trap method is an effective tool for Isolating Aplysia genes encoding secreted and membrane proteins.

  • We have developed a biological signal measurement, archiving, and communication system (SiMACS). The front end of the system is the intelligent data processing unit (IDPU) which includes ECG, EEG, EMG, blood pressure, respiration, temperature measurement modules, module control and data acquisition unit, real-time display and signal processing unit. IDPUS are connected to central data base unit through LAN(Ethernet). Workstations which receive signals from central DB and provide various signal analysis tools are also connected to the network. The developed PC-based SiMACS is described.

  • To perceive fluctuations in light quality, quantity, and timing, higher plants have evolved diverse photoreceptors including UVR8 (a UV-B photoreceptor), cryptochromes, phototropins, and phytochromes (Phys). In contrast to plants, prokaryotic oxygen-evolving photosynthetic organisms, cyanobacteria, rely mostly on bilin-based photoreceptors, namely, cyanobacterial phytochromes (Cphs) and cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs), which exhibit structural and functional differences compared with plant Phys. CBCRs comprise varying numbers of light sensing domains with diverse color-tuning mechanisms and signal transmission pathways, allowing cyanobacteria to respond to UV-A, visible, and far-red lights. Recent genomic surveys of filamentous cyanobacteria revealed novel CBCRs with broader chromophore-binding specificity and photocycle protochromicity. Furthermore, a novel Cph lineage has been identified that absorbs blue-violet/yellow-orange light. In this minireview, we briefly discuss the diversity in color sensing and signal transmission mechanisms of Cphs and CBCRs, along with their potential utility in the field of optogenetics.
