  • X-ray diffaction and chemical analysis were used for mineralogical characteristics of weathering grade of granite and biotite gneiss. Granite is composed mainly of quartz, albite, and minor K-feldspar and biotite gneiss is biotite, quartz, albite. Illite and kaolinite increased in granite, and vermiculite and halloysite in biotite gneiss as increasing weathering process. The percentages of $Al{2}O_{3}$ increase but that of CaO, $Na_{2}O,\;K_{2}O$ decrease as the weathering process. $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ different from granite and biotite gneiss.

  • The Precambrian granitic gneisses are widely distributed in the Danyang-Yecheon area, eastern part of Korea, where the Ryeongnam massif borders the Ogcheon fold belt. They are composed of migmatitic, biotite granitic, garnet-bearing and granoblastic granitic gneisses. The common joint sets of the granitic gneiss are NE and NS directions, which are probably related to the effects of Daebo orogeny and Bulgugsa disturbance, respectively. Mineral assemblages of the banded gneiss xenolith in the garnet-bearing granitic gneiss are quartz-plagioc1ase-biotite-mus-covite-orthoclase and quartz-plagioc1ase-biotite-garnet, belonging to the amphibolite facies. The granoblastic granitic gneiss is felsic, metaluminous, and granitic, and shows subalkaline trend. The garnet-biotite geothermometry of garnet-bearing granitic gneiss yields 640$^{\circ}$-708$^{\circ}C$ at pressure of 4 kb.

  • The precambrian gneisses are widely distributed in the Jangsu area. This study focuses on the metamorphic mineral assemblages and metamorphic P-T conditions of the gneiss. We have analyzed garnet, biotite and plagioclase among the gneiss through the EPMA analysis, and calculated the metamorphic temperature and pressure accordingly. The metamorphic temperature was estimated by the average of values from the garnet and biotite formulas, and the metamorphic pressure by value of the Hoisch(1990) geopressured on garnet-biotite-plagioclase. The mineral sample we examined shows garnet-biotite-plagioclase-quartz composite and garnet-plagioclase-orthoclase-quartz composite. Garnet shows almandine-pyrope solid solution in general, while porphyroblastic gneiss shows almandine-grossluar solid solution. The fact that the abundances, observed by garnet profile, are almost identical in both the central region and the outer egion indicates that the crystal was developed uniformly. There is almost negligible variance in biotite on metamorphic grade, and andesine is observed in plagioclase. The metamorphic temperature and pressure from EPMA analysis and its indications are as follows: the middle-temperature, high-pressure metamorphism ($500-650^{\circ}C$, 6.9-10 kbar) ensued in the beginning, and then was followed by the high-temperature, middle-pressure($600-740^{\circ}C$, 2.7-5.9 kbar) to ($500-540^{\circ}C$, 3.1 kbar) retrograde metamorphism.

  • Four road tunnels, which consists of biotite gneiss and granite gneiss and shows a similar geological conditions, were selected in this study. Laboratory and field tests, the rock mass rating for the four tunnels were conducted. A regression analysis was performed to find out the correlations of test results. It was proposed an equation of reduction factor which can assess the deformation modulus for biotite gneiss and granite gneiss. It was also found that there was a close correlation between Q and RQD in four tunnels according to the analysis between RMR and Q, RMR and RQD, Q and RQD and laboratory and field tests.

  • In Gimcheon area of the central Yeongnam massif granite gneiss occurrs with intercalated biotite gneiss at xenolith or restite. In order to understand the evolution of the central Yeongnam massif, it is essential to have absolute age information, but not many age data are available yet. Furthermore the previous age determinations from the study area are not compatible with the outcrop relationship. In this study we determined chemical ages from the zircon grains. We obtained ages of $1970\pm$ 78(l$\sigma$)Ma from the granite gneiss, $1814\pm$77(l$\sigma$)Ma from the outer rim of a rounded zircon and 1973$\pm$97(l$\sigma$)Ma from a longish zircon, both from the biotite gneiss. These ages seem to indicate the timing of granitic magma intrusion and subsequent metamorphism. Ages of $2954\pm$ 158($l\sigma$)Ma, 2440$\pm$58(l$\sigma$)Ma, and 2219$\pm$36($l\sigma$)Ma obtained from zoned core of the rounded zircon grain from the biotite gneiss suggest various geological events before such metamorphism of the biotite gneiss. Ages in the range of 1450~1670 Ma observed in zircons of both gniesses suggest later metamorphism that the granite gneiss and the biotite gneiss experienced together. The chemical age determination by electron probe micro-analyzer of this study utilized 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ beam diameter and it seems to be a very useful age determination from the zircons with complex growth history because of superior spatial resolution.

  • The Odesan Gneiss Complex consists of mainly migmatitic gneiss and porphyroblastic gneiss with locally intercated quartzite, amphibolite, marble and leucocratic gneiss. At least two different regional metamorphisms are recognized in the study area. Metamorphic grade of the first metamorphism increases from the K-feldspar-muscovite zone(in which biotite-muscovite-plagioclase-quartz and garnet-biotite-muscovite-K-feldspar-plagioclase-quartz assemblages occur) in the east and southwestern part of the study area to the K-feldspar-garnet zone(in which garnet-biotite-K-feldspar-plagioclase-quartz, biotite-K-feldspar-plagioclase-quartz, garnet-biotite-K-feldspar-plagioclase-sillimanite-spinel-quartz assemblages occur) in the northwestern part. Kyanite is found as inclusions in plagioclase. The second metamorphism is characterised by occurrence of cordierite. The metamorphic grade of 2nd metamorphism decreases radically from the central-western part near Gaeinsan in which cordierite-garnet-sillimanite-biotite-muscovite-quartz, cordierite-garnet-spinel-sillimanite-biotite-muscovite-quartz assemblages representing the garnet-cordierite zone are observed. The garnet-cordierite zone is surrounded by the sillimanite-cordierite zone which shows cordierite-sillimanite-biotite-plagioclase, cordierite-muscovite-biotite-plagioclase and sillimanite-muscovite-biotite-plagioclase assemblages. The peak metamorphic P-T conditions of the first metamorphism calcuted from garnet-biotite-sillimanite-K-feldspar-plagioclase-spinel assemblage are 5.4~7.4 kb and $776-789^{\circ}C$. Real P-T condition of the first metamorphism might be higher than the calcuated P-T condition according to the study based on the phase equilibria. P-T conditions calcuated from the garnet-biotite in plagioclase are 12.5kb and $650^{\circ}C$ which indicate that the P-T path of the first metamorphism had passed a high pressure condition before the peak metamorphic temperature condition. The peak metamorphic P-T conditions of the second metamorphism calcuated from garnet-biotite-cordierite-spinel-quartz assemblage are $680~750^{\circ}C$ at pressures lower than 6 kb. In the Odesan Gneiss Complex, the first metamorphism of medium pressure and high temperature had occurred after the high pressure condition and fast uplift and then the second metamorphism of low pressure condition occurred after sedimentation of the Kuryong Group.

  • The Sobeaksan Gneiss Complex in the Punggi area is composed of mainly mignatitic gneiss, porphyroblastic gneiss, garnet granitic gneiss and biotitie granitic gneiss. Metamorphic grade increase gradually from the amphibolite facies of northwestern part to the granulite facies of southwestern part in the study area. Representative mineral assemblage in the amphibolite facies is biotite-muscovite-K-feldspar-plagioclase$\pm$garnet$\pm$epidote, needle shape or fibrous sillimanite occur in transitional zone from the amphibolite facies to the granulite facies. In the granulite facies, the garnet-Opx granulite shows garnet-orthopyroxene-biotite-plagioclase, the metabasite shows clinopyroxene-plagioclase$\pm$hornblende$\pm$orthopyroxene$\pm$garnet and the migmatitic gneiss shows garnet-biotite-sillimanite-cordierite$\pm$spinel as representative mineral assemblage. Retrograde metamorphism after the granulite facies metamorphism made corindum and andalusite in the migmatitic gneiss and the thin layer garnet between clinopyroxene and plagioclase in the metabasites. The peak P-T conditions of the migmatitic gneiss and the garnet-Opx granulite are $916^{\circ}C$/6.6 kb and $826^{\circ}C$/6.3 kb, respectively. The P-T condition of biotite and plagioclase inclusion, which indicates the progressive condition of the granulie facies, within garnet is $866^{\circ}C$/7.5 kb and that of rim composition of garnet and biotite is $726^{\circ}C$/4.6 kb, which infer the clockwise P-T path of the granulite facies metamorphism. The temperatures caculated by the rim composition of garnet and biotite in the migmatitic gneiss and garnet granitic gneiss have a wide range of $556-741^{\circ}C$, which indicate that the retrograde metamorphism after the granulite facies metamorphism has effected differently. It is difficult to determine the P-T condition of the biotite granitic gneiss because less occurrence and higher spessartine content of garnet. The P-T condition of the thin layered garnet between clinopytoxene and plagioclase in the metabasite is $635-707^{\circ}C$/4.1-5.3 kb. This texture indicates the isobaric cooling(IBC) condition of the retrogressive metamorphism. As a result, the metamorphic evolution of the Punggi area has undergone the isobaric cooling after the granulite facies metamorphism which has undergone the clockwise P-T path.

  • Plutons of Damyang-Jinan area consist of gray feldspar granite gneiss, biotite granite gneiss, foliated granites, Namweon granites, gabbro, biotite granite and Ogangri granite in term of mineralogical, texture and field evidence. From Isotope data of study area, chronological order of the Plutons are the Pre-cambrian gray feldspar granite gneiss(Ar39-Ar40, hornblende, $1998.4{\pm}8.3Ma$), middle to late Triassic Daegang foliated granite(Rb/Sr, whole rock, $288{\pm}4Ma$), foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite(K/Ar, hornblende, $198.7{\pm}9.9Ma$), Sunchang foliated granodiorite(Rb/Sr, whole rock, $222{\pm}4Ma$), foliated two mica granite, Samori foliated granite and Namweon granite(Rb/Sr, whole rock, $211{\pm}3Ma$: K/Ar, hornblende, $203{\pm}10.2Ma$), middle Jurassic Gabbro(K/Ar, hornblende, $180.7{\pm}9MA$) and biotite granite, and Cretaceous Ogangri granite. According to variations diagrams of $Al_2O_3$ versus normative PI(100 An)/(Ab+An), Daegang foliated granite is plotted on tholeiitic series, and other foliated granites on calc alkaline rock series which are consider to be formed by magmatism at continental margin and island arc region. And alkalinity versus $SiO_2$ shows that Daegang folited granite and Samori foliated granite are correspond to alkaline region, foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite and Sunchang foliated granodiorite to calc alkaline region, and foliated two mica granite to both regions. According to ACF diagrams, Daegang and Samori foliated granites are plotted on S-type. Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite and Sunchang foliated granodiorite on I-type, and foliated two mica granite on both type. Foliated granites are a series of differentiated products from cogenetic magma, and effected under ductile sheared zone. Characteristic foliation of foliated granites are considered to be generated by dextral strike slip faulting and ductile shearing.

  • Here we discuss a geochemical characterisitc of rare earth element (REE) pattern of a Precambrain leucogranitic gneiss at Imweon, Gangwon Province, Korea. The outcrop includes biotite gneiss xenolith. The leucocratic granite gneiss contacting with biotite gneiss is pegmatitic. However, there is no evidence of contact metamorphism between biotite gneiss and leucocratic-pegmatitic granite gneiss. The leucocratic granite gneiss shows a specific phenomenon of M-type (convex curved) tetrad effect in chondrite-normalized REE patterns with large negative Eu anomaly. The degree of REE tetrad effect in the leucocratic-pegmatitic granitec gneiss is weak and shows partly W-type (concave curved) tetrad effect. The Eu anomaly of leucocratic granite gneiss has close relationship with the degree of tetrad effect as well as Ca/Sr ratio. Our results suggest that the REE tetrad effect from the leucocratic granite gneiss should be formed during differentiation process of granitic magma. We also confirmed that the weathering might affect Eu or Ce anomaly rather than the formation of REE tetrad effect in granitic rock.

  • The study area is located at the middle part of Daebo granitic batholith in the Gyeonggi massif. The geology of the area is mostly composed of Precambrian gneiss complex, coarse- grained middle Jurassic and fine-grained early Cretaceous biotite granites, and Cretaceous small stocks and dykes. The gneiss complex consists mainly of banded gneiss, granitc gneiss, some schist and quartzite. The coarse-grained granite can be divided into greyish granite(Gg1 in the margin and slightly pinkish granite(Gp) in the center. The former is hornblende biotite granite characterized by basic clot and xenolith. The latter is generally garnet biotite granite containing only poor basic clot. The fine-grained granite intruded the coarse-grained granite. The K/Ar biotite ages from the granites belong to middle Jurassic and early Cretaceous. The K/Ar biotite ages and geochemical compositions indicate that Gg and Gp were differenciated from a single magmatic body. The granites are calc-alkali and metaluminous-peraluminous. They are S-type(i1menite series) and partly I-type granitedmagnetite series) formed by melting of relatively fixed source composition. Their tectonic settings belong to the compressional suits and VAG of continental margin.
