  • Sensitivity studies of blade angle and twisted angle are numerically investigated to optimize the Savonius blade. As blade angle increases, the contact area between blade and wind decreases, showing the suppression of the vortex generation near blade. Compared to the blade angle of 0 degree, the blade angle of 20 degree shows about 2.6% increment of power efficiency. Based on the blade angle of 20 degree, sensitivity studies of the twisted angle are performed. The result indicates that the adjustment of the twisted angle causes the torque of blade to increase. Optimized blade can suppress the formation of the vortex structure in rear region. Also, wind flows without disturbance of vortex when passing through the optimized blade. The 1kw vertical wind turbine system with optimized blade can generate 4442.2kWh per year and have 53% capacity factor.

  • In order to improve the performance of cross-flow hydro turbine, detailed examination of the effect of the turbine configuration on the performance is needed necessarily. Therefore, this study is aimed to investigate the effect of blade angle on the performance of the cross-flow hydro turbine. Analysis of the turbine performance with the variation of the blade angle has been made by using a commercial CFD code. The results show that inlet and outlet angles of runner blade give considerable effect on the performance of the turbine. Pressure on the surface of the runner blade changes remarkably by the blade angle both at the Stages 1 and 2. Moreover, relatively small blade inlet angle is effective to produce higher value of output power. Recirculating flow in the runner passage causes remarkable hydraulic loss.

  • The present study investigated local heat/mass transfer characteristics on the surface of the rotating turbine blade with various incidence angles. The experiments are conducted in a low speed annular cascade with a single stage turbine. The blade has a flat tip with the mean tip clearance of 2.5% of the blade chord. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure detailed mass transfer coefficient on the blade. At design condition, the inlet Reynolds number is $Re_c=1.5{\times}10^5$ which results in the blade rotation speed of 255.8 rpm. Also, the effect of off-design condition is examined with various incidence angles between $-15^{\circ}$ and $+7{\circ}$. The results indicated that the incidence angle has significant effects on the blade surface heat transfer. In mid-span region, the laminar separation region on the pressure side is reduced and the laminar flow region on the suction side shrinks with increasing incidence angle. Near the tip, the effect of tip leakage flow increases in span wise and axial directions as the incidence angle decreases because the tip leakage flow is formed near the suction side surface. However, the effect of tip leakage flow is reduced with positive incidence angle.

  • We aimed to develop a non-clogging submersible slurry pump with two blades to replace the conventional vortex pump. To do this, we simulated the effect of parameters such as the blade angle $\beta$ and the blade-length angle $\alpha$ on pump efficiency. We used the commercial codes ANSYS CFX and BladeGen. The results showed that the best blade shape was obtained for $\beta$ = $30^{\circ}$ and that the pump efficiency was proportional to $\alpha$ in the simulated range.

  • In this study, the performance of an impeller according to blade length and pitch angle was studied experimentally by building a variable pitch impeller while changing blade length to review the effect of blade length and pitch angle on a fan's performance. The pitch angle was changed in six steps from $20^{\circ}{\sim}45^{\circ}$ at intervals of $5^{\circ}$ while the blade lengths were changed to 90 mm, 100 mm, 110 mm and 120 mm with an identical airfoil shape while carrying out the experiment. The results are summarized as follows: The air flow per static pressure of axial fans increased linearly with increase of pitch angle, but the high static pressure showed a decrease at a pitch angle of $35^{\circ}$. The shaft power increased proportionally to the pitch angle at all blade lengths; the larger the pitch angle, the larger the measured increase of shaft power. This is because the drag at the fan's front increases with the pitch angle. In the axial fans considered in this research, the flow and increase of static pressure amount increased up to a pitch angle of $30^{\circ}$ but decreased rapidly above $35^{\circ}$.

  • In this study, peeling test of the Altari radish on kimchi pre-processing system for mechanization was performed with the longitudinal plane peeling type with wider cutting blade than that of the peeled chip's. To determine the optimum cutter shape to match this plane peeling type, the peeling tests depending on variable cutting speed, rake angle and blade angle using the blade with thickness as 2 m and width as 50mm were performed, and the patterns of the peeled chips and peeling resistances were investigated. As the result of the tests, the rake angle of the blade with clean peeled surface of the Altari radish was over $45^{\circ}$, and the blade angle and rake angle with the minimum peeling resistance was $20^{\circ}\;and\;60^{\circ}$, respectively. The optimum peeling conditions were; the peeling speed 0.2m/s, blade angle $20^{\circ}$ and the rake angle $60^{\circ}$, and the peeling resistance of each blade was 15 N.

  • To investigate the influence of blade profiles on cavitation behavior in impeller of centrifugal pump, a centrifugal pump with five different blade profiles impellers are studied numerically. The impellers with five different blade profiles (single arc, double arcs, triple arcs, logarithmic spiral and linear-variable angle spiral) were designed by the in-house hydraulic design code using geometric parameters of IS 150-125-125 centrifugal pump. The experiments of the centrifugal pump have been conducted to verify numerical simulation model. The numerical results show that the blade profile lines has a weak effect on cavitation inception near blade inlet edge position, however it has the key effect on the development of sheet cavitation in impeller, and also influences the distribution of sheet cavitation in impeller channels. A slight changing of blade setting angle will induce significant difference of cavitation in impeller. The sharp changing of impeller blade setting angle causes obvious cavitation region separation near the impeller inlet close to blade suction surface and much more flow loss. The centrifugal pump with blade profile of setting angle gently changing (logarithmic spiral) has the super cavitation performance, which means smaller critical cavitation number and lower vapor cavity volume fraction at the same conditions.

  • This paper presents numerical study on the performance improvement of the sirocco fan in a range hood. The performance of sirocco fan means a higher flowrate, a higher static pressure and a lower required motor power in a fixed geometry constraint. Various impeller geometric parameters, such as blade profile, blade diameter, blade thickness profile and blade exit angle, were investigated by numerically and the results were compared with each other to know the effects on the performance. In this approach, the volute geometry were fixed with the original shape. The numerical results show that the blade profile with airfoil shape and small exit blade thickness increases the performance. The blade exit angle shows optimum angle within a varied range. The efficiency of the optimized exit angle was about $10\%$ higher than the base blade exit angle and the static pressure was about $28\%$ higher at the flow coefficient 0.22.

  • This paper describes the cycloidal wind turbine, which is a straight blade vertical axis wind turbine using the cycloidal blade system. Cycloidal blade system consists of several blades rotating about an axis in parallel direction. Each blade changes its pitch angle periodically. Cycloidal wind turbine is different from the previous turbines. The wind turbine operates with optimum rotating forces through active control of the blade to change pitch angle and phase angle according to the changes of wind direction and wind speed. Various numerical experiments were conducted to develop a small vertical axis wind turbine of 1 kW class. For this numerical analysis, the rotor system equips four blades consisting of a symmetric airfoil NACA0018 of 1.0m in span, 0.22m in chord and 1.0m in radius. A general purpose commercial CFD program, STAR-CD, was used for numerical analysis. PCL of MSC/PATRAN was used for efficient parametric auto mesh generation. Variables of wind speed, pitch angle, phase angle and rotating speed were set in the numerical experiments. The generated power was obtained according to the various combinations of these variables. Optimal pitch angle and phase angle of cycloidal blade system were obtained according to the change of the wind direction and the wind speed. Based on data obtained from the above analysis, control device was designed. The wind direction and the wind speed were sensed by a wind indicator and an anemometer. Each blades were actuated to optimal performance values by servo motors.

  • In the present study, we studied the method of predicting the on-design and on-design point performance of axial flow fan with adjustable pitch blades. With the change of stagger angle of axial flow fan with adjustable pitch blade, flow rate and pressure can be changed. Because of this merit adjustable pitch fans are used in many industrial facility. When changing stagger angle or estimating the performance at a wide range of off-design condition, incidence angle changes greatly as the flow rate changes. Therefore, the deviation angle at the blade exit is estimated by the correlation considering the effects of blade design, incidence angle variation. In the loss model, we used known pressure loss model for blade boundary layer and wake, secondary flow, endwall boundary layer and tip leakage flow. The results of modified deviation angle model and experiment were compared for the usefulness of the modified model.
