Actual Use and Characteristics of Clues for Blind Person's Independent Walking - Case Study of Kansai Region in JAPAN - (전맹인의 단독 보행을 유도하는 단서 사용실태와 특성 - 일본 간사이(關西) 지방 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this research is support blind person's daily walking. In order to achieve the purpose, we investigate how the environmental information is used for their daily walking both in residential and commercial areas considering the characteristics of walking. In the investigation, interview to the persons concerned is carried out and all the conversation with them is recorded with a voice recorder. Moreover, the environmental information that may become clues is plotted on a map together with photos. The results are as follows; (1) Environmental information which the blind persons use is different depending on the role of its own of place, such as place confirmation, direction decision, distance understanding. (2) It is demonstrated that the information acquisition from sound is effective when they especially understand place and location.

  • Nowaday, financial institutions provide secure mobile keyboard solutions to keep their mobile banking services safe. However, these are still vulnerable to attacks, such as shoulder surfing attack. Especially, in the case of handicapped person such as visual impairment and blindness, they are more vulnerable than ordinary person because of inconvenience of secure information input. Among them, we focused on the color blind. For the color blind, 4-color based secure keyboard method causes more inconvenience to notify exact color. Thus, we propose a secure mobile keyboard solution to provide advanced functionality for the color blind users. Our method is based on 4-color theorem to support color blind users. In addition, our scheme is robust against shoulder surfing attack. According to the evaluation result, our method offers increased security against shoulder surfing attack compare with existing methods.

  • We have proposed an indoor positioning system for moving objects and/for the blind or visually impaired to play various sports. [ for a blind or visually impaired playing various sports.] This system consists of a wireless heart rate monitor, wireless sensor network and / 4 ultrasound satellites [ configuration with four ultrasound satellite modules) at the corners of the room. This system provides / the real-time measurement of the location and heart rate of the person in the room[ non-invasive measurement method of the heart rate and the location of a person in real time ], and will help the [a] blind or visually impaired enjoy sports more easily.

  • This study is derived from a problem for the blind, how to recognize the space and how to find their way. Unlike ordinary people, the disabled people are closely related with special constructor environment using the other sense. Especially, to find his/her location, each person depends on the wayfinding ability as acquiring specific and various information,(e.g. recognizing figure by tactile sense, space size by auditory sense, direction by light from a window and regular noise, and existence of switch in a specific place.) Those senses help the person's wayfinding to his/her destination. The procedure of wayfinding are location, position, orientation, navigation, and movement. Consequently, construction for the people above mentioned can offer a design-guideline considering following factors, building arrangement considering regular noise, refurbishment, plan configuration of floor and wall-skin changed, circulation stream that maintains right angle by the regular noise in the building, enforcement location character by the inflow of the light into a crossing.

  • Nowadays, technologies such as RFID, sensor network makes our life comfortable more and more. In this paper we propose a wearable computing system for blind and deaf person who can be easily out of sight from our technology. We are making a wearable computing system that is consisted of embedded board to processing data, ultrasonic sensors to get distance data and motors that make vibration as a signal to see the screen for a deaf person. This system offers environmental informations by text and voice. For example, distance data from a obstacle to a person are calculated by data compounding module using sensed ultrasonic reflection time. This data is converted to text or voice by main processing module, and are serviced to a handicapped person. Furthermore we will extend this system using a voice recognition module and text to voice convertor module to help communication among the blind and deaf persons.

  • A compass device which indicates the right direction using the recorded voice was developed to assist the people who are blind when they are walking and moving to somewhere. The developed voice compass consists of a sensing module which recognizes the terrestrial magnetism with magnetic sensor, voice recorder IC, speaker and microprocessor which controlled all the components. It has 32 directions resolution and can continuously indicates the progressing direction with established time interval for the user convenience. It can help walking of the blind people and designed to be used in various sports and leisure. The performance of the developed device was verified by experiment with person who are blind.

  • This is a Phenomenological study to describe the experience of nursing students on blind persons. Report and individual interviews were conducted on subjective experience of 5 nursing students. Data were analyzed through Giorgi's method in which meaningful statements. The results were from significant statements on reports and interview. These were clustered into 17 theme and 4 central meaning. Nursing Students started practice with prejudice, fear, and expectation at the same time. They also experienced complicated feelings (expansion of consciousness, growth of self, expansion of emotion, true presence)for the blind person. Make a situational structural description from theme and central meaning. Make a general structural description from situational structural description.

Sight disabled persons' long jump average recording (121.84cm) showing normal persons' average recording (259.27cm) and much differences, show that motion of body is not big to Touch-down from Ready action. 2. Each phase body center composition(r) average speed displayed result that it is more meaning more than Each phase time required. 3. Began in line carriage without body back stretching in 1 situation on Event one are sight disabled persons. Was expose that do not bend enough knee and ankle than normal person in Event two. Was expose that body is not drooped for surface of land in Event three, and knee and ankle were expose that do not unfold easily than normal person. Was expose that do not bend enough on Touch-down knee by relation that can not grasp position of the floor in Event four. 4. When taking off, the average of horizontal speed of body center are 1.80m/sec for blind people and 3.53m/sec for the normal. In this connection, the study shows that the difference of horizontal speed between the blind and the normal is bigger than difference of vertical speed, which are 1.56m/sec for the blind and 1.98m/sec for the normal. Also, composite speed also shows us big difference between 2.41m/sec of the blind and 4.07m/sec of the normal. The speed body center of take-off was expose that average adjuster are big width of deceleration than average - beginning disabled person's average by 2.23m/sec - 1.71m/sec in the vertical speed. 5.   • Current traffic guidance system offers the information of traffic light using a speaker to everybody including the blinds without object certification. Therefore, the current system gives stress by noisy sound to normal person. It is difficult for the blind to hear informations such as location, current traffic sign light status, and weather information, because of the vehicle noise and surroundings noise. If the blind or sight disabled person who has the RFID tag or has a white stick with RFID tag approaches to street crossing, RFID reader recognizes the tag and it serves necessary information through speaker or bluetooth. And also it is possible for the blind to use less expensive one with RFID tag than the white stick with RFID Reader.

  • We implementated an ultrasonic wave cane for the blind. The cane detect walking obstacle and provide a walking direction. The cane used time of flight method of ultrasonic-wave for a measurement of obstacle distance and fluxgate geomagnetic sensor for guidance of walking direction. This system can detect an obstacle of upward, forward, downward and that warn to the blind with vibration, pitch sound. And the blind can know walking direction to voice output. As a result, the blind could efficiently avoid a exposed obstacle, obstacles beyond knee, an exposed street obstacle, a branch of tree person's height and it is usable search for surrounding land mark.
