Experimental investigations are performed on the stability and the structure of bluff-body stabilized hydrogen flames. The velocities of coflow air are varied from subsonic to supersonic velocity of Mach 1.8 and OH PLIF images and Schilieren images are used for analysis. Three characteristic flame modes are classified into three regimes with the variation of fuel-air velocity ratio; a jet like flame, a central-jet dominated flame and a recirculation zone flame. Stability curves are drawn to find the blowout regimes and to show that flame stability is improved by increasing the lip thickness of fuel nozzle that works as bluff-body. $Damk{\ddot{o}hler$ number is adopted in order to scale the blowout curves of each flame obtained at different sizes of the bluff-body and all blowout curves are scaled successfully regardless of its bluff-body size.
This paper computes the bluff-body stabilized jet and flame. This study numerically investigates the nonpremixed $C_{2}H_{4}-air$ jet for the nonreacting case and the nonpremixed $CH_{3}OH-air$ turbulent flames for the reacting case using the laminar flamelet model on modified KIVA2 code. And this study predicts $NO_{x}$ formation characteristics using Eulerian Particle Flamelet Model. In the present study, the turbulent combustion model is applied to analyze both nonreacting and reacting case. And both standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and modified $k-{\varepsilon}$ model are used in nonreacting case. Calculations are compared with experimental data in terms of velocity, mixture fraction, mixture fraction Root Mean Square and Temperature. The present model correctly predicts the essential features of flame structures and $NO_{x}$ formation characteristics in the bluff-body stabilized flames.

This study investigates the nonpremixed $H_2/CO$-air turbulent flames numerically. The turbulent combustion process is represented by a reaction progress variable model coupled with the presumed joint probability function. In the present study, the turbulent combustion model is applied to analyze the nonadiabatic flames by introducing additional variable in the transport equation of enthalpy and the radiative heat loss is calculated using a local, geometry independent model. Calculations are compared with experimental data in terms of temperature, and mass fraction of major species, radical, and NO. Numerical results indicate that the lower and higher fuel-jet velocity flames have the distinctly different flame structures and NO formation characteristics in the proximity of the outer core vortex zone. The present model correctly predicts the essential features of flame structure and the characteristics of NO formation in the bluff-body stabilized flames. The effects of nonequilibrium chemistry and radiative heat loss on the thermal NO formation are discussed in detail.
The purpose of the study is to assess the extinguishing concentration of inert gases in engine nacelle fire. The experiment was performed with a two dimensional rectangular bluff body stabilized flames, where the fuel was ejected to counter flow and co-flow against an oxidizer stream. Two inert gases, $CO_2$ and $N_2$, were used for extinguishing agent in the oxidizer and methane was used for fuel. The main experimental parameters were the direction of injecting fuel, the kinds of agent and the velocity ratio between air and fuel streams, which controlled the mixing characteristic near bluff body and the strength of recirculation zone in the downstream. The result shows the flame structure and the mode were strongly dependent with fuel/air ratio and the fuel jet direction. For both flow configurations, the extinguishing concentration of $CO_2$ was smaller than the $N_2$ because of the large heat capacity of $CO_2$. However, the concentration of inert gasesat blowout was much smaller than those in the cup burner and coflow jet diffusion flames, which implies that the extinction mechanism of bluff body stabilized flames was mainly due to the aerodynamic aspect. Compared to co-flow fuel injection, the extinguishing concentration of inert gases under counter flow configuration was lower. The effect of direction might result from the mixing characteristic and strength of recirculation zonearound a bluff body. More details should be investigated for the characteristic of recirculation zone in the wake of bluff body using the LES(Large Eddy Simulation).

The stability and structure of bluff-body stabilized hydrogen flames were investigated numerically and experimentally. The velocity of coflowing air was varied from subsonic velocity to a supersonic velocity of Mach 1.8. OH PLIF images and Schlieren images were used for analysis. Flame regimes were used to classify the characteristic flame modes according to the variation of the fuel-air velocity ratio, into jet-like flame, central-jet-dominated flame, and recirculation zone flame. Stability curves were drawn to find the blowout regimes and to show the improvement in flame stability with increasing lip thickness of the fuel tube, which acts as a bluff-body. These curves collapse to a single line when the blowout curves are normalized by the size of the bluff-body. The variation of flame length with the increase in air flow rate was also investigated. In the subsonic coflow condition, the flame length decreased significantly, but in the supersonic coflow condition, the flame length increased slowly and finally reached a near-constant value. This phenomenon is attributed to the air-entrainment of subsonic flow and the compressibility effect of supersonic flow. The closed-tip recirculation zone flames in supersonic coflow had a reacting core in the partially premixed zone, where the fuel jet lost its momentum due to the high-pressure zone and followed the recirculation zone; this behavior resulted in the long characteristic time for the fuel-air mixing.
The Numerical simulation was performed on the flow field around the two-dimensional rectangular bluff body in order to complement the previous experimental results of the bluff body stabilized flames [1]. For both fuel ejection configurations against an oxidizer stream, the flame stability was affected mainly by vortex structure and mixing field near bluff body. FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulator) based on the LES(Large Eddy Simulation) was employed to clarify the isothermal mixing characteristic and wake flow pattern around bluff body. The air used atmosphere and the fuel used methane. The result of counter flow configuration shows that the flow field depends on air velocity but the mixing field is influenced on the fuel velocity. At low fuel velocity the fuel mole fraction is below the flammable limit and hence the mixing is insufficient to react. Therefore, as the result, the flame formed at low fuel velocity is characterized by non-premixed flames. For the flow field of co-flow configuration, flame stability was affected by fuel velocity as well as air velocity. the vortex generated by fuel stream has counter rotating direction against the air stream. Therefore, the momentum ratio between air and fuel stream was important to decide the flame blow out limit, which is result in the characteristic of the partially premixed reacting wake near extinction.
The present study is focused on the development of the RIF (Representative Interactive Flamelet) model which can overcome the shortcomings of conventional approach based on the steady flamelet library. Due to the ability for interactively describing the transient behaviors of local flame structures with CFD solver, the RIF model can effectively account for the detailed mechanisms of $NO_x$ formation including thermal NO path, prompt and nitrous $NO_x$ formation, and reburning process by hydrocarbon radical without any ad-hoc procedure. The flamelet time of RIFs within a stationary turbulent flame may be thought to be Lagrangian flight time. In context with the RIF approach, this study adopts the Eulerian Particle Flamelet Model (EPFM) with mutiple flamelets which can realistically account for the spatial inhomogeneity of scalar dissipation rate. In order to systematically evaluate the capability of Eulerian particle flamelet model to predict the precise flame structure and NO formation in the multi-dimensional elliptic flames, two methanol bluffbody flames with two different injection velocities are chosen as the validation cases. Numerical results suggest that the present EPFM model has the predicative capability to realistically capture the essential features of flame structure and $NO_x$ formation in the bluff-body stabilized flames.

An experimental study is carried out on turbulent diffusion flames stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergent duct flow. A commercial grade gaseous propane is injected from two slits on the rod as fuel. Flame stability limits, as well as size and temperrature of recirculation zone, are measured by direct and schlieren photographs to clarify the characteristics and structure of diffusion flames and to assess the effect of various divergent angle of duct. The results of the present study are as follows. Temperature in the recirculation zone decreases with increasing divergent angle. The blow-off velocity in parallel duct is higher than that in divergent duct. Critical blow-off velocity is expected to be about 8-12 degree through blow-off velocity pattern. Regardless of divergent angles, the length of recirculation zone is nearly constant, and this length becomes longer with rod diameter. Pressure gradient has an effect on the eddy structure in shear layer behind the rod. With the increase of divergent angle, large scale eddies by dissipated energy in shear layer are split into small scale eddies, and the flame becomes a typical distributedreacting flame.
The Numerical simulation was performed on the flow field around the two-dimensional rectangular bluff body in order to simulate an engine nacelle fire and to complement the previous experimental results of the bluff body stabilized flames. Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) based on the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) was employed to clarify the characteristics of reacting flow around bluff body. The overall reaction was considered and the constant for reaction was determined from flame extinction limits of experimental results. The air used atmosphere and the fuel used methane. For both fuel ejection configurations against an oxidizer stream, the flame stability and flame mode were affected mainly by vortex structure near bluff body. In the coflow configuration, air velocity at the flame extinction limit are increased with fuel velocity, which is comparable to the experiment results. Comparing with the isothermal flow field, the reacting flow produces a weak and small recirculation zone, which is result in the reductions of density and momentum due to temperature increase by reaction in the wake zone.

The objective of this study is to investigate the validity of the dynamic sub-grid G-equation model to a complex turbulent premixed combustion such as bluff body stabilized turbulent premixed flames for the considering of the realistic engineering application. In this study, a new turbulent flame speed model, introduced by the sub-grid turbulent diffusivity and the flame thickness, is also proposed and is compared with an usual model using sub-grid turbulent intensity and with the experimental data. The calculated results can predict the velocity and temperature of the combustion flow in good agreement with the experiment data.
