  • Effect of boron on corrosion resistance of Type 304 stainless steel has been studied. Boron tends to segregate at the grain boundaries during cooling after solution treatment, and so boron treated steel usually exhibits a ditch structure under the 10% oxalic acid test. However, it was found that the addition of 25 ppm boron in Type 304 steel has no effect on the general and pitting corrosion resistance while it has a little effect on the intergranular corrosion resistance.

  • In this study, the effect of hot-stamping heat treatment on the microstructure and hardness of TWB(Tailor Welded Blank) laser joints in Al-Si-coated boron steel and Zn-coated DP(Dual Phase)590 steel was investigated. In the TWB joints without heat treatment, hardness profiles showed local hardness deviation near the fusion zone. However, there was no hardness deviation in the heat treated specimen and its hardness was higher than that of the one without the heat treatment, due to a fully martensite microstructure. In the TWB joints of both the boron and DP steels, the maximum hardnesses were observed at the HAZ(Heat Affected Zone) near the base metal, and the hardness decreased gradually to the base metal. In the heat treated joints, the hardnesses of the HAZ and the base metal of the boron steel side were similar to the maximum hardness of the weld, while those of the HAZ and the base metal of the DP steel side were higher than the maximum hardness.

  • The effects of boron additions in steels have long been recognized as very important, mainly with respect to hardnability of heat treatable steels. The systematics of structure and properties of boron steels will then be illustrated in the context of low-alloy steels with carbon contents raging from 0.05 to 0.25% and boron contents 0-130 ppm. we investigated the effect of the microstructure and mechanical properties with heat treatment condition of the boron-treated(0.0013 ppm) low carbon(0.2 %C) low alloy steel. The specimens were austenitised for 5 and 10, 15 min at $880{\sim}940^{\circ}C$(with/without tempered at 150, 180 and $210^{\circ}C$ for the various periods of time from 60 min to 120 min) After heat treatment, mechanical properties were measured by tensile test and hardness test. For analysis of microstructure, Optical/SEM analysis and XRD were carried out.

  • Newly developed Atom Probe Tomography (APT) technique can provide the highest available spatial resolution, 3D tomography imaging and quantitative chemical analysis in a sub-nm scale. As a complementary technique to APT, Nano-secondary ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) also provides the boron distribution in micro-scale. Therefore, the exact behavior of boron at either grain boundary or grain interior in steels can be investigated by the combination of APT and SIMS techniques from the sub-nanometer scale to the micrometer scale. The results obtained by both APT and SIMS revealed that the boron atoms were mainly segregated to the grain boundaries rather than to the grain interior in the steels containing 50ppm and 100ppm boron. It also found that carbon atoms were segregated at the boron enriched regions, which were thought to be retained austenite phase due to the chemical composition of carbon atoms.

  • In this study, Al-Si coated boron steel(1.2 mm) were laser welded by $CO_2$ laser and hot-stamping was applied to the laser joints. Tensile properties and microstructures of the joints were investigated before and after hot-stamping. Tensile and yield strengths of the as welded specimen similar with base metal and fracture occurred base metal of boron steel. Although, in case of heat treated specimen, fracture occurred fusion zone that Al segregated zone near the bond line. These could be explained by the existence of ferrite, in the Al segregated zone near the bond line and base metal of boron steel. Before hot-stamping, hardness of base metal is lower than fusion zone and heat affected zone in spite of exist Al segregation zone($Fe_3$(Al,Si)). So fracture occurred base metal. Although, after hot-stamping, microstructure of base metal and welds zone transformed to martensite and bainite except in Al segregation zone near the bond line that $Fe_3$(Al,Si) transformed to a-ferrite. So fracture occurred Al segregation zone near the bond line.

  • This study examined the toughness improvement of a track shoe used as the undercarriage of excavator and bulldozer parts. The excavator is operated under poor conditions, such as the build-up field and quarry. Therefore, the track shoe requires high strength and impact toughness to endure immense shock while at work. The track shoe was made of heat treated boron steel. The sufficient possibility of hardenability with the theoretical Jominy curve for boron steel was confirmed while quenching. The Taguchi orthogonal array experiment method was used to optimize the process variables, such as area reduction ratio and heat treatment conditions (tempering temperature and holding time), to achieve toughness improvement. The toughness of the track shoe increased with increasing area reduction, and a tempering temperature of $210^{\circ}C$ and a tempering time of 80 min are beneficial for improving the toughness of the track shoe.

  • In a recent investigation, the formation of bainite phase in direct-quenched low carbon non heat-treated steel was reported. In this study the effects of bainite phase on the mechanical properties of direct-quenched microalloying steels were investigated. By isothermal transformation at $480^{\circ}C$ for 7 sec., volume fraction of bainite lath was 15~20%, and the UTS and impact energy were increased. In this case $B_{ll}$ and $B_{lll}$ type bainite was observed and the fractography of impact test specimen showed a ductile fracture tendency. Isothermal transformation for 100sec., yielded 30% volume fraction of granular bainite and the mechanical properties were decreased. The f ractography of impact test specimen showed a brittle fracture tendency. The addition of Mo was more effective than B for improving impact energy because amounts of boron aditions were restricted to considerably lower levels, typically 10~ 30ppm. From this study, it is predicted that 15~20% volume fraction of lath bainite on the direct quenching process is procduced by addition of Mo up to 1.2wt. % and controlling the finish forging proc¬ess at $1000^{\circ}C$ and using oil as direct quenching media. This will improve mechanical properties of the direct- quenched steel.

  • In this study, the effects of the compaction method for (Mg+2B) powders on the apparent density and superconducting properties of $MgB_2$ bulk superconductor were investigated. The raw powders used in this study were nano-sized boron (B) and spherical magnesium (Mg). A batch of a powder mixture of (Mg+2B) was put in a steel mold and uniaxially pressed at 1 ton or 3 tons into pellets. Another batch of the powder mixture was uniaxially pressed at 1 ton and then pressed isostatically at $1800kg/cm^2$ in the water chamber. All pellets were heat-treated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in flowing argon gas for the formation of $MgB_2$. The apparent density of powder compacts pressed at 3 ton was higher than that at 1 ton. The cold isostatic pressing (CIP) in a water chamber allowed further increase of the apparent density of powder compacts, which influenced the pellet density of the final products ($MgB_2$). The compaction methods (uniaxial pressing and CIP) did not affect the formation of $MgB_2$ and superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$) of $MgB_2$, but affected the critical current density ($J_c$) of $MgB_2$ significantly. The sample with the high apparent density showed high $J_c$ at 5 K and 20 K at applied magnetic fields (0-5 T).
