  • The auther investigated the distribution and seasonal variations of Copepods and Branchiopods in Myeongam Lake located in Cheongju City, Chungchungbuk Do. Air and Water temperature, pH, and the amount of dissolved oxygen were also measured eleven times from July 29 to November 5, 1977. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The mean values of air and water temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen during the investigation period were $25^{\circ}C , $23.7^{\circ}C, 6.86, and 10.75 ppm, respectively. 2. The total number of species collected in this lake were 13 species (1) thermocyclops taihokuensis (Harada) (2) Thermocyclops hyalinus (Rehberg) (3) Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus) (4) Diacyclops disjunctus (Thallwitz) (5) Paracyclops fimbriatus (Fischer) (6) Cyclops sp. a (7) Cyclops sp. b (8) Diaphanosoma brachyurum (Lievin) (9) Daphnia pulex Leydig (10) Daphnia longispina (O. • The specimens of the recent conchostracans belonging to order Spinicaudata collected from freshwater habitats at 13 localities in South Korea during the period from May 1981 to May 1992 were examined. As a result of the present study, two species were identified: Caenestherielru gifuensis (Ishikawa, 1895), and Eurimnodio braueriona Ishikawa, 1895. The two species were described and figured in this paper. This is the first report of the recent conchostracan fauna from Korea.

  • Feeding ecology of endangered Korean endemic miho spine loach, Cobitis choii, was investigated in Jicheon Stream, Geumgang River, Korea to provide ecological characteristics and baseline data for its restoration. C. choii is active during daylight hours above sand from March to October when the water temperature exceeded $13^{\circ}C$, but tended hibernate in the stream bottoms (sand) in the winter months (November~February) when the water temperature was lower than $13^{\circ}C$. They fed (index of relative importance, IRI) mainly Diptera (69.9%), Copepoda (23.2%), Arcellidae (2.3%), Branchiopoda (2.0%) and Ploima (2.0%). And their small juvenile (age 0+) fed mainly small size, Ploima and Branchiopoda, however, they ate mainly large size, Chilonomidae, while growing to adult fish (age 2+~3+).

  • The activity period and feeding ecology of the Iksookimia yongdokensis were investigated to obtain baseline data for its ecological characteristics in the Chuksan Stream and Gokgang Stream, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea from 2015 to 2016. I. yongdokensis were active on cobble, pebble and sand bottom from March to November when the water temperature exceeded $10^{\circ}C$, but tended to overwinter in cobble and pebble during the winter months (December~February) when the water temperature was lower than $10^{\circ}C$. During the day from 9 am to 15 pm, individuals of I. yongdokensis were highly active with a high rate of food consumption. I. yongdokensis activley fed on the surface of stone, pebble and sand as a filter feeder. Their main food sources analyzed with an index of relative importance (IRI) include Chironomidae (54.7%), Branchiopoda (10.1%), Rotatoria (8.7%), Arcellidae (8.6%), Chlorophyceae (6.5%) and Bacillariophyceae (5.1%). Juveniles of I. yongdokensis (total length 20~39 mm) fed on small-sized preys such as Rotatoria, Branchiopoda and Arcellidae, but they exhibited a transition in their prey-size markedly dominated by large-sized preys such as Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera as they grow.

  • Specimens of Bosmina longirostris collected from various freshwater habitats of 84 localities in South Korea from October 1981 to August 1997 were examined, and seasonal changes of the cladoceran populations in Late Kwangjuho from October 1995 to August 1977 were analysed. In this paper, B. longirostris in Korea was redescribed and figured, with a discussion of morphological characteristics. Some ecological features of the species were noted.

  • Lynceid conchostracans of the order Laevicaudata in East Asia are reviewed. Validity of the three older species, Lynceus mandsuricus Daday, Lynceus biformis (Ishikawa), and Lynceus dauricus Thiele, is examined and discussed. Two species among them were acknowledged but L. dauricus was synonymized to L. biformis and redescribed and illustrated in the present paper, based on the materials collected from the rice-fields at 15 localities in Korea.

  • Changes of feeding habitat and feeding organ of a land-locked sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis related to their growth process were investigated in the Lake Okjeong, Sannae-myeon, Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do, Korea from 2004 to 2005. In the lake, the post-larvae from 25 to 40 mm in standard length fed mainly on animal organisms such as Copepoda, Branchiopoda and Rotatoria. Also, the juveniles from 50 to 60 mm (SL) fed on Chironomidae of Diptera, Copepoda and Branchiopoda. However, the juvenile from 60 to 70 mm (SL) in the Churyeong Stream fed on animal organisms and aquatic algae, the immature fishes more than 70 mm (SL) fed on only periphyton such as Synedra, Cymbella, Navicula and Pinnularia. Also, the feeding organs of the tooth and stomach were changed according to its growth and food change.

  • Probabilistic ecological risk assessment (PERA) for deriving ecological protective concentration (EPC) was previously suggested in USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Netherland. This study suggested the EPC of cadmium (Cd) based on the PERA to be suitable to Korean aquatic ecosystem. First, we collected reliable ecotoxicity data from reliable data without restriction and reliable data with restrictions. Next, we sorted the ecotoxicity data based on the site-specific locations, exposure duration, and water hardness. To correct toxicity by the water hardness, EU's hardness corrected algorithm was used with slope factor 0.89 and a benchmark of water hardness 100. EPC was calculated according to statistical extrapolation method (SEM), statistical extrapolation $method_{Acute\;to\;chronic\;ratio}$ ($SEM_{ACR}$), and assessment factor method (AFM). As a result, aquatic toxicity data of Cd were collected from 43 acute toxicity data (4 Actinopterygill, 29 Branchiopoda, 1 Polychaeta, 2 Bryozoa, 6 Chlorophyceae, 1 Chanophyceae) and 40 chronic toxicity data (2 Actinopterygill, 23 Branchiopoda, 9 Chlorophyceae, 6 Macrophytes). Because toxicity data of Cd belongs to 4 classes in taxonomical classification, acute and chronic EPC (11.07 ${\mu}g/l$ and 0.034 ${\mu}g/l$, respectively) was calculated according to SEM technique. These values were included in the range of international EPCs. This study would be useful to establish the ecological standard for the protection of aquatic ecosystem in Korea.
