Laser Rapid Prototyping by Melting Brass Powder (황동 분말의 용융에 의한 레이저 급속 조형법)

  • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) can produce three-dimensional objects directly from a CAD solid model without part-specific tooling. In this study, a simple rapid prototyping through selective laser sintering on brass powder is investigated using a Nd-YAG laser. Experiments are conducted to produce single lines on a powder-packed bed for various process parameters. Also, temperature distribution in the powder bed and the thickness of a melted line are predicted by finite element analysis. In the numerical analysis, the thermal conductivity of the brass powder which is obtained as a function of state and temperature is used.

  • The Cu-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using of gas-atomized metallic glass powders and ductile brass powders. No defect such as pores and cavities was observed at the interface between the brass powder and the metallic glass matrix, suggesting that the SPS process caused a severe viscous flow of the metallic glass and brass phases in the supercooled liquid region, resulting in a full densification. The BMG composites shows some macroscopic plasticity after yielding, although the levels of strength decreased.

  • The Ni-based bulk metallic glass matrix composites were fabricated by spark plasma sintering of mixture of gas-atomized metallic glass powders and ductile brass powders. The successful consolidation of metallic glass matrix composite was achieved by strong bonding between metallic glass powders due to viscous flow deformation and lower stress of ductile brass powders in the supercooled liquid state during spark plasma sintering. The composite shows some macroscopic plasticity after yielding, which was obtained by introducing a ductile second brass phase in the Ni-based metallic glass matrix.

  • This work investigated the influence of concentration and applied potential on the characteristics of zinc powder (purity, apparent density, morphology, particle size distribution, and particle zeta potential) produced by the electrochemical process from waste brass. High-purity zinc powder is obtained using selective leaching of industrial brass waste in acidic, neutral, and alkaline solutions. The free immersion method with and without voltage using linear polarization technique is used. In the electrochemical process, hydrochloric acid HCl in three different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) M is used. The time and the distance between the electrodes are set to be 30 min and 3 cm, respectively. It has been found that the percentage purity is 98%, 96%, and 94% for the acidic, neutral, and alkaline solutions, respectively. In addition, the morphology of zinc powder analyzed by SEM was dendritic and mossy. It has been recorded that the purity of zinc increases with the increase of the concentration and applied potential. The highest value of purity for zinc powder was %98.58 in 1000 mV and 0.3M concentration for graphite cathode.

  • In this study, we optimized dissolution the dissolution conditions of porous amorphous powder to have high specific surface area. Porous metallic glass(MG) granules were fabricated by selective phase dissolution, in which brass is removed from a composite powder consisting of MG and 40 vol.% brass. Dissolution was achieved through various concentrations of $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$, with $HNO_3$ proving to have the faster reaction kinetics. Porous powders were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry to observe crystallization behavior. The Microstructure of milled powder and dissolved powder was analyzed by scanning electron microscope. To check for residual in the dissolved powder after dissolution, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscory and elemental mapping was conducted. It was confirmed that the MG/brass composite powder dissolved in 10% $HNO_3$ produced a porous MG granule with a relatively high specific surface area of $19.60m^2/g$. This proved to be the optimum dissolution condition in which both a porous internal granule structure and amorphous phase were maintained. Consequently, porous MG granules were effectively fabricated and applications of such structures can be expanded.

Properties of Defect Initiation and Fatigue Crack Growth in Manufacturing Process of Bearing Metal (베어링메탈 제조공정에 따른 결함발생 및 피로균열 전파특성)

  • A study has been made on defects which are formed in manufacturing processes of engine bearing and also on fatigue crack growth behavior in each step of bearing metal manufacturing. After the first step(sinter brass powder on steel plate ; Series A) many voids are made on brass surface and its size is decreased by the second step(rolling process of sintered plate ; Series B). After the third step(re-sintering step of brass powder and rolling ; Series C) the number of voids is decreased and its type shows line. The time of fatigue crack initiation and the growth rate of fatigue crack are in order of Series A, Series B, Series C. These reasons are that void fosters the crack initiation and growth, and residual stress made by rolling process effects on the crack growth rate in Series B, C. In forming and machining processes by use of final bearing metal, crack was observed at internal corner of flange and peeling off was observed at junction between steel and brass. Owing to the above crack and peeling off, it is considered that there is a possibility of fatigue fracture during the application time.

  • Aluminum thin plate coated with epoxy resin containing about 20wt% brass powder, was applied to fins of heat exchanger. We carried out a series of detailed examinations to evaluate the anti-bacterial performance of the plate and heat exchanger (fan coil unit). In the presence of water or moisture, copper ions which have an anti-bacterial ability eluted from brass powder and showed sufficient effects on many kinds of bacteria. We also evaluated the anti-bacterial performance quantitatively by use of the index API (Anti-bacterial Performance Index) which has already been proposed by authors.

  • Cu-Zn alloy nano powders were fabricated by the electrical explosion of Zn-electroplated Cu wire along with commercial brass wire. The powders exploded from brass wire were composed mainly of ${\alpha},{\beta},\;and\;{\gamma}$ phases while those from electroplated wires contained additional Zn-rich phases as ${\varepsilon}$, and Zn. In case of Zn-elec-troplated Cu wire, the mixing time of the two components during explosion might not be long enough to solidify as the phases of lower Zn content. This along with the high vapor pressure of Zn appears to be the reason for the observed shift of explosion products towards the high-Zn phases in electroplated wire system.

  • Bulk metallic glass (BMG) composites combining a $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ matrix with brass powders or $Zr_{62}A_{l8}Ni_{13}Cu_{17}$ metallic glass powders were fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The brass powders and Zr-based metallic glass powders added for the enhancement of plasticity are well distributed homogeneously in the Cu-based metallic glass matrix after consolidation. The BMG composites show macroscopic plasticity after yielding, and the plastic strain increased to around 2% without a decrease in strength for the composite material containing 20 vol% Zr-based amorphous powders. The proper combination of strength and plasticity in the BMG composites was obtained by introducing a second phase in the metallic glass matrix.
