A Study for The Optimal Detail on Intersectin of Longitudinal-Transversal Rib in Orthotropic Steel Deck Bridge, Bulkhead Plate Reinforced. (벌크헤드 플레이트로 보강된 강바닥판교의 종리브-횡리브 교차연결부의 최적상세 연구)

  • Orthotropic steel deck bridge has much advantages such as the light deadweight, so the construction of orthotropic steel deck is profitable for the long-span bridges Although the system has a lot of merits, it happens some damages by the traffic density and the fatigue cracks of welding. The cross-connection of longitudinal rib and transversal rib is one of the weakest at the fatigue. The secondary stresses which are from the out-plane deformation of transversal rib and the torsion of longitudinal rib make the topical stress concentration phenomenon. The Bulkhead Plate for prevention of this stress concentration phenomenon was applied by changing the orthotropic steel deck of Williamsburg bridge in USA. But, it is principle that a Bulkhead Plate is not established in the domestic design standard. Therefore, it is estimated that the study for installation of Bulkhead Plate is needed. This study with considering these circumstances proves efficiency of Bulkhead Plate and will be presented optimal design details through finite element analysis according to change the geometrical of Bulkhead Plate and the cross-connection area of longitudinal and transversal rib

  • Recently, the bridges become greater according to development of a construction technology. This phenomenon requires long span bridge, so that increases the dead weight. The orthotropic steel deck bridges have much advantages such as the light dead weight and the reduction of construction period. And almost whole process of carried out is manufactured at factory, so it can cause the increase of quality authoritativeness. But orthotropic steel deck bridge is consist of structure by welding, it can not avoid a lot of welding jobs, defects and transformation by welding are becoming problem accordingly. Specially, topical stress concentration phenomenon in cross connection area of longitudinal and transverse rib causes fatigue failure. The Bulkhead Plate for prevention of this stress concentration phenomenon was applied by changing the orthotropic steel deck of Williamsburg bridge in USA. But, it is principle that a Bulkhead Plate is not established in the domestic design standard. Therefore, it is estimated that the study for installation of Bulkhead Plate is needed.   • As a first step of a thermal stress analysis in a watertight bulkhead plate during welding of a spool type penetration piece, the bulkhead plate has been idealized as infinite plate with a circular hole. The exact solution for the transient temperature distribution and the associated quasi-static thermal stress which arise in a infinite plate subjected to an instantaneous point source of heat acting on the periphery of the circular hole. And the solutions have been extended to the case of a moving heat source with the aid of the Duhamel's superposition integral. The solutions can be applied to the problems such as a circular cutting or welding of a plate.

  • The objects of this paper are to stimulated discussion of the criteria used for deciding the scantling of watertight bulkhead stiffener of steel fishing boats ranged of length of 20 meters to 80 meters and to suggest a method of calculation based on beam theory. Present knowledge is examined and it appears that failure of a bulkhead stiffener is comparatively rare. Regarding its structure bulkhead does not contribute on longitudinal strength of a ship. The strength of a bulkhead stiffener can be treated locally. Assuming bulkhead stiffeners are free ends and fixed ends theoretical required section modulus are calculated and compared with classification societies' rule. Welding effect of a bulkhead stiffener to bulkhead plate and a bracket to stiffener and deck plate are considered. On various conditions of joints are suggested.

  • Recently, Orthotropic steel deck bridges, which have long span decks, have been regarded as one of economical as well as durable bridge types. However, Orthotropic steel deck bridge is used by a lot of welding, which may cause welding defect and deformation of connections.   • The noise sources in ship and offshore structure have an influence on adjacent receiving area through a partition between noise sources and receiving area. The partition in ship is usually made of stiffened plate. Sound transmission loss (STL) of the partition at high frequency could be improved by additional installation of insulation or wall panel. At low frequency, however, it is very difficult and needs an increase of plate thickness which causes a considerable weight increase of ship. In this paper, we have investigated the effect of the bulkhead boundary condition. From measurement result, we found that the bulkhead boundary condition can affect a lot in STL, especially at low frequency range. Finally, we get the 5dB increase in STL through the modification of boundary condition.

  • This study showed the development process of structural design method of BHB(Blast Hardened Bulkhead) which are applicable in preliminary design stage. In the previous 1st report, the simplified structural scantling equations of BHB were formulated theoretically using the modified plastic hinge method supplemented by considering the membrane effects due to large plastic deformation. And the scantling methodology of plate thickness and section area of stiffeners of the curtain plate type BHB was dealt with. In the present 2nd report, derivation process of the correction factors which can adjust the developed scantling equations considering the uncertainties contained in the design parameters was introduced. Considering the actual BHB structures of 3 warship, the correction factors for the developed scantling equations for curtain plate type BHB were derived. Finally the applicability, validity of them and the strategy of future improvement were considered.

  • As a second step of a thermal stress analysis in a watertight bulkhead plate during welding of a spool type penetration piece, is idealized as a thin circular disk with a clamped boundary. The exact solution for the transient temperature distribution and associated quasi-static thermal stresses which arise in a circular disk subjected to an instantaneous point source of heat acting in its interior has been obtained. And the solutions have been extended to the case of moving source of heat with the aid of the Duhamel's superposition integral and the results finally derived have been compared with the other results from the typical cases. The solutions can be applied to the problem such as a welding of a penetration piece on the watertight bulkhead and also applicable to the problems which occur in cutting or welding.

  • The objective of this paper is to calculate the fatigue strength for upper deck hatch corner insert plate of large container carriers without wave load analysis and global finite element analysis at the initial design stage. Wave load analysis and global F.E. analysis for three container carriers have been performed by GL(Germanischer Lloyd) procedure to propose the equation for hatch corner stress range which is the important factor in fatigue strength calculation. Considering the restraining effect of bulkhead, three types of equation, that is, single tight bulkhead, double tight bulkhead and support bulkhead have been proposed. Using the proposed equations, a simplified fatigue analysis based on GL rules has been performed for two container carriers of which fatigue strength analysis was carried out by GL. From the comparison between fatigue strength result of using the proposed equations and that of GL, it has been found that proposed stress range equations are useful for scantling of upper deck hatch corner insert plates for over 8,000 TEU class container carriers.

  • Blast Hardened Bulkhead (BHB) is an important measure that can increase the ship's survivability as well as protect the lives of the crew by mitigating the damage extent caused by an internal explosion in the ship. In particular, both the pressure and the shock impulse should be considered when designing the BHB against reflected shock waves having a high pressure with a short duration. This study proposes a design method for BHB that considers both the pressure and the shock impulse generated during the internal explosion. In addition, analysis and design concepts for accident loads such as explosion, fire, and collision of NORSOK and DNVGL, one of the international design guidelines for the curtain plate type blast hardened bulkhead type applied by the Korean Navy, are utilized. If this method is applied, it is expected that it can be used as a design concept for the pressure as well as the shock impulse of the explosion load of the curtain plate.
