  • The preparation of ZrC/SiC mixed powders from $ZrSiO_4/C$ and $ZrSiO_4/Al/C$ systems was attempted in the temperature range below $1600^{\circ}C$ under Ar or $Ar/H_2$ gas flow(100-500ml/min). The formation mechanism and kinetics of ZrC/SiC were suggested and the resultant powders were characterized. In $ZrSiO_4/C$ system, ZrC and SiC were formed by competitive reaction of $ZrO_2(s)$ and SiO(g) with carbon at temperature higher than $1400^{\circ}C$. The apparent activation energy for the formation of ZrC was approximately 18.5kcal/mol($1400-1600^{\circ}C$). In $ZrSiO_4/Al/C$ system, ZrC was formed by reaction of ZrO(g) with Al(l, g) and carbon at temperature higher than $1200^{\circ}C$, and SiC was formed by reduction-carbonization of SiO(g) with Al(l, g) and carbon at temperature higher than $1300^{\circ}C$. The products obtained at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 5h consisted of ZrC with lattice constant of $4.679{\AA}$ and crystallite size of $640{\AA}$, and SiC with lattice constant of $4.135{\AA}$ and crystallize size of $500{\AA}$. And also, the mean particle size was about $21.8{\mu}m$.

  • We have successfully fabricated 3D (3-dimensional) nanostructures of $TiO_2$ coated with a $g-C_3N_4$ layer via hydrothermal and sintering methods to enhance photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Due to the coupling of $TiO_2$ and $g-C_3N_4$, the nanostructures exhibited good performance as the higher conduction band of $g-C_3N_4$, which can be combined with $TiO_2$. To fabricate 3D nanostructures of $g-C_3N_4/TiO_2$, $TiO_2$ was first grown as a double layer structure on FTO (Fluorine-doped tin oxide) substrate at $150^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. After this, the $g-C_3N_4$ layer was coated on the $TiO_2$ film at $520^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. As-prepared samples were varied according to loading of melamine powder, with values of loading of 0.25 g, 0.5 g, 0.75 g, and 1 g. From SEM and TEM analysis, it was possible to clearly observe the 3D sample morphologies. From the PEC measurement, 0.5 g of $g-C_3N_4/TiO_2$ film was found to exhibit the highest current density of $0.12mA/cm^2$, along with a long-term stability of 5 h. Compared to the pristine $TiO_2$, and to the 0.25 g, 0.75 g, and 1 g $g-C_3N_4/TiO_2$ films, the 0.5 g of $g-C_3N_4/TiO_2$ sample was coated with a thin $g-C_3N_4$ layer that caused separation of the electrons and the holes; this led to a decreasing recombination. This unique structure can be used in photoelectrochemical applications.

  • This study aims to analyze the association between the center of mass(C.O.G) and ocular movement(E.O.G) according to the success and failure in the left turn motion on the balance beam, targeting three female gymnasts. When successful, the left-right C.O.G was moved to the left, which was a rotational direction until such time as the body rotated $180^{\circ}$, whereas there appeared to be a greater movement during failure; thus, it was shown to affect the maintenance of dynamic postural control. In case of the subsequent left-right turning motion of E.O.G, this matches the previous theory that the eyeball moves against the direction of rotation of the body. However, there was a difference at the time of movement, and a clear difference emerged in the success and failure in this study. Also, in the E.O.G in the up-down direction, a movement during failure showed a pattern of down direction in most cases; thus, it is deemed to affect the failure. Therefore, the kinetic postural control and E.O.G are supposed to affect the success and failure in a landing, which is the most importantly evaluated movement on the balance beam, in mutual association.

  • $(Ni, Zn)Fe_2O_4$ powders were prepared through self-propagating high temperature synthesis reaction and the effects of initial zinc oxide powder size and oxygen pressure on the magnetic properties of the final combustion products were studied. The ferrite powders were combustion synthesized with iron, iron oxide, nickel oxide, and zinc oxide powders under various oxygen pressures of 0.5~10 atmosphere after blended in n-hexane solution for 5 minutes with a spex mill, followed by dried at 120 $^{\circ}C$ in vacuum for 24 hours. The maximum combustion temperature and propagating rate were about 1250 $^{\circ}C$ and 9.8 mm/sec under the tap density, which were decreased with decreasing ZnO size and oxygen pressure. The final product had porous microstructure with spinel peaks in X-ray spectra. As the ZnO particle size in the reactant powders and oxygen pressure during the combustion reaction increase, coercive force, maximum magnetization, residual magnetization, squareness ratio were changed from 1324 Oe, 43.88 emu/g, 1.27 emu/g, 0.00034 emu/gOe, 37.8$^{\circ}C$ to 11.83 Oe, 68.87 emu/g, 1.23 emu/g, 0.00280 emu/gOe, 43.9 $^{\circ}C$ and 7.99 Oe, 75.84 emu/g, 0.791 emu/g, 0.001937 emu/gOe, 53.8 $^{\circ}C$ respectively. Considering the apparent activation energy changes with oxygen pressure, the combustion reaction significantly depended on initial oxygen pressure and ZnO particle size.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the protective capacity of cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G), which is rich in mulberry and blackberry as an anthocyanin pigment. In this study, we found that treatment with C3G significantly reduced ROS production in hydrogen peroxide $(H_2O_2)-treated$ HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, treatment with C3G significantly increased the cell viability in a dose-dependent manner in $H_2O_2-treated$ HepG2 cells. Moreover, treatment with C3G dose-dependently decreased the release of LDH and activation of caspase-3 in HepG2 cells treated with $H_2O_2$. Furthermore, the DNA damage in $H_2O_2-treated$ HepG2 cells was decreased by C3G treatment when compared with the control group in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, treatment with C3G recovered the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase in $H_2O_2-treated$ HepG2 cells. To summarize, these results suggest that C3G protects cells from $H_2O_2-induced$ oxidative damage by activating antioxidant enzymes.

  • Al doped $LiMn_2O_4$ cathode powders with fine size were synthesized by an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method from the spray solution with citric acid and ethylene glycol. The as-prepared powders with spherical shape, porous structure and micron size turned into $LiMn_{11/6}Al_{1/6}O_4$ powders with micron size and regular morphology after post-treatment above $800^{\circ}C$. The $LiMn_{11/6}Al_{1/6}O_4$ powders had low initial discharge capacity of 94 mAh/g at a post-treatment temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. As the post-temperature increased from $750^{\circ}C$ to $1,000^{\circ}C$, the initial discharge capacities of the $LiMn_{11/6}Al_{1/6}O_4$ powders changed from 103 to 117 mAh/g. The $LiMn_{11/6}Al_{1/6}O_4$ powders had the maximum discharge capacity at a post-treatment temperature of $750^{\circ}C$. However, the $LiMn_{11/6}Al_{1/6}O_4$ powders post-treated at a temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ had the good cycle properties. The discharge capacities of the $LiMn_{11/6}Al_{1/6}O_4$ powders dropped from 107 to 100 mAh/g (93% capacity retention) by the 70th cycle at a current density of 0.1 C.

  • Oxidative stress is common cause of neurodegenerative diseases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the in vitro free radical scavenging activity and protective effect of three Glycyrrhiza species including Glycyrrhiza uralensis, G. glabra, and a new variety of Glycyrrihza (Shinwongam, SW) against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress in C6 glial cells. In vitro assays, radical scavenging activities of G. uralensis, G. glabra, and SW against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, ·OH, and O2- increased as concentration-dependent manner. In addition, the SW was found to contain the highest polyphenol and flavonoid contents. The treatment of H2O2 to C6 glial cell induced oxidative stress, whereas G. uralensis, G. glabra, and SW significantly increased the cell viability as dose-dependent manner. In particular, SW exerted stronger protective effect on H2O2-induced cytotoxicity, than G. uralensis and G. glabra. Furthermore, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation was significantly elevated by H2O2 in C6 glial cells. However, treatments of G. uralensis, G. glabra, and SW decreased ROS formation. In addition, SW decreased pro-inflammatory related protein expression levels such as inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2, compared to H2O2-treated control group. These results indicated that G. uralensis and G. glavra, especially SW, may be useful for preventing from oxidative stress-induced neuronal damage by regulating inflammatory reaction.

  • Direct production of biomass from starch using amylolytic yeast, Sporobolomyces holsaticus FRI Y-5 was studied with varying the ratios between carbon and other nutrient sources in the medium. It was investigated under condition of constant C/P and C/S ratio to influence the initial concentration of starch $(S_o)$ and C/N ratio on its growth which is described as the specific growth rate $({\mu})$, cell yield (Y), the maximum concentration of cell $(X_m)$, and productivity (P). They were very dependent on both $S_o$ and C/N ratio. The form of the relationship between and ${\mu}$ and $S_o$ was observed to be similar to saturation kinetics at C/N = 100 but presented substrate inhibition at other C/N ratios. As $S_o$ was changed from 22.5 to 90 g/l, Y was observed to vary with C/N ratios but seemed to decrease as a wholes. $X_m$ was linearly related to $S_o$ at more than C/N = 50 but at less than C/N = 10 substrate inhibition was presented. P increased suddenly to $S_o$ = 45 g/l and then changed decreasingly at less than C/N = 50, but at more than C/N = 100 it changed increasingly. The effect of C/P ratio and C/S ratio on the yeast growth was also investigated at constant $S_o$ and C/N ratio. ${\mu}$ was dependent on C/P and C/S ratios, but Y, independent on them. But $X_m$ was reliant upon C/P ratio but not upon C/S ratio.
