  • The rate of fixation of the components were evaluated in CCA-Type B and CCFZ-treated radiata pine sapwood by quantitative analysis of solution expressed from the treated wood. The leaching characteristics of radiata pine blocks treated with CCA-Type B and CCFZ were also evaluated by the AWPA standard leaching test. Both fixation and leaching charactersistics of CCA-Type B were compared with CCA-Type C treated wood samples. The rate of CCA-Type B fixation was a little faster than that of CCFZ. However, significant amounts of arsenic was unfixed in the CCA-Type B treated samples and consequently leached. These significant quantities of arsenic liberated from the CCA-Type B treated wood during service may pose some environmental concerns. Arsenic was no longer detectable from CCA-Type C treated samples when fixation was complete, even though the fixation of CCA-Type C was slower in some degree than CCA-Type B. In summary, it could be said that CCFZ was much safer preservative than CCA-Type B by the criterion based on the relative hazard assessed by absolute amount of unfixed element present in the treated wood. Also the decision that CCA preservative has to move from Type B to Type C should be made sooner or later for continuous use of CCA preservative in the future.

  • The fixation characteristics of CCA and CCFZ in Japanese red pine, Japanese larch, and ezo spruce sapwood were compared at various temperatures and fixation conditions (drying and nondrying fixation). Fixation was monitored by the rates of reduction of hexavalent chromium to trivalent one, and optimal fixation time was estimated based on the results. The rate of fixation was highly temperature dependent, and the fixation rate of treated wood conditioned under nondrying conditions was much more faster than that under drying conditions, especially when the moisture content of treated wood was below fiber saturation point. Preservative types affected fixation; CCA-Type B had the highest fixation rate, followed by CCA-Type C and then CCFZ. The differences in fixation rates of preservative components were also observed among wood species; Japanese red pine fixed the fastest, followed by Japanese larch and then ezo spruce. Time required to complete fixation according to the fixation temperature could be predicted successfully using the regression equations between the temperatures and fixation time, regardless of conditioning methods, preservative types, and wood species.

  • This study was performed to investigate the corrosion of metal fasteners in waterborne preservative-treated wood. Of all the metal tested, steel exhibited the greatest amount of corrosion across all preservatives and exposure conditions whereas stainless steel was totally inert. Galvanized steel corroded at a much lower rate compared to steel and the corrosion of brass was negligible. Among the preservatives, CCA-Type B was the most corrosive system tested. The sequence for the average corrosivity across all metals was: CCA-type B>CCA-Type C${\geq}$ACC${\geq}$CCA-Type A. Across all metals and retentions the salt formulations were more corrosive than the oxide and the corrosion was increased with the increse in the amount of preservative loadings. The amount of corrosion was also increased with the increase in exposure relative humidity (RH) across all metals and presevatives However, at the 60% RH exposure condition, the corrosion of metals was very negligible. Consequently, it can be concluded that across all metals oxide-type preservatives should be used to prevent the corrosion problem of metal fasteners in contact with treated wood and the use of steel nail preservative-treated wood should be avoided without distinction of end-use location, i.e., exterior or interior, and the use of stainless steel or at least brass nail in damp exterior condition was strongly recommended.

  • This study aims to investigate the manufacturing process of calcium chloride-based special cement, i.e., CCA (calcium chloro aluminate, C11A7·CaCl2), which uses limestone, by using one type of random industrial by-product, domestic coal ash, cement kiln dust. The manufacturing process of was examined in detail, and the results suggested that the amount of CCA synthesized increased with an increase in the firing temperature. The manufacturing process of CCA was investigated at 1200℃, which was determined as the optimum firing temperature. The results showed that in general, the amount of CCA synthesized tended to increase with an increase in the firing time; however, the clinker melted when the firing time was more than 30 min, thereby suggesting that a firing time of less than 20 min would be suitable for the clinkering process. The optimal firing conditions for manufacturing CCA were obtained as follows: heating rate of 10 ℃/min, firing temperature of 1200 ℃, and holding time of 20 min. The results also suggest that manufacturing CCA will be easier when high chlorine-containing cement kiln dust is used.

  • The rates of fixation of CCA-Type B and CCFZ in blocks of radiata pine sapwood were compared at various temperatures and conditioning methods (drying and nondrying conditioning). Also the time required to proper fixation of preservative components in the treated wood was estimated. Fixation was monitored by the rates of depletion of free hexavalent chromium in the cell lumens in the teated blocks. The rate of preservative fixation in wood was highly temperature dependent. The fixation rate was considerably accelerated by means of heating and complete fixation of hexavalent chromium was achieved within about 12 hours by heating at $60^{\circ}C$. The moisture content of treated wood during fixation apparently played an important role in the fixation process. The fixation rate of treated wood conditioned in nondrying conditions was much more faster than that of treated wood conditioned in drying conditions. particularly when the moisture content of treated wood was below fiber saturation point. Time required to full fixation could be predicted successfully using the fixation temperatures applied since the correlation between the fixation temperature and the fixation time was excellent. regardless of conditioning methods.

  • Opisthorchis viverrini infection induces chronic inflammation, and a minor proportion of infected individuals develop advanced periductal fibrosis (APF) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). Inflammatory cytokines and/or their gene polymorphisms may link to these biliary pathologies. We therefore investigated associations among cytokine gene polymorphisms and cytokine production in 510 Thai cases infected with O. viverrini who presented with APF+ or APF-, as established by abdominal ultrasonography as well as in patients diagnosed with CCA. Levels of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines were determined in culture supernatants after stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with O. viverrini excretory-secretory (ES) products. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, IFN-${\gamma}$, LT-${\alpha}$, and TNF-${\alpha}$ were significantly increased in CCA patients compared with non-CCA (APF- and APF+) cases. Polymorphisms in genes encoding IL-$1{\beta}$-511C/T, IL-6-174G/C, IFN-${\gamma}$+874T/A, LT-${\alpha}$+252A/G, and TNF-${\alpha}$-308G/A were then investigated by using PCR-RFLP or allele specific-PCR (AS-PCR) analyses. In the CCA cases, LT-${\alpha}$+252A/G and TNF-${\alpha}$-308G/A heterozygous and homozygous variants showed significantly higher levels of these cytokines than the wild type. By contrast, levels of cytokines in wild type of IFN-${\gamma}$+874T/A were significantly higher than the variants in CCA cases. IFN-${\gamma}$+874T/A polymorphisms were associated with advanced periductal fibrosis, whereas IL-6-174G/C polymorphisms were associated with CCA. To our knowledge, these findings provide the first demonstration that O. viverrini infected individuals carrying several specific cytokine gene polymorphisms are susceptible to develop fibrosis and CCA.

  • The fixation and leaching characteristics of chromated copper arsenate (CCA Type C) and chromium- copper-fluoride-zinc (CCFZ) in domestic softwood (Japanese red pine, Korean pine, and Japanese larch) sapwood were investigated using the expressate method to follow chromium fixation and the American Wood-Preservers' Association (AWPA) leaching procedure to determine leaching properties after fixation. The rates of fixation were affected by preservative types; CCA was fixed much faster than CCFZ for all species evaluated. There were definite differences in the fixation rates of different species, with Korean pine requiring shorter to fix than the other species evaluated. Chromium fixation was greatly enhanced by elevated temperatures, and fixation time can be estimated according to fixation temperatures applied. The percentage of arsenic and zinc leached from domestic softwoods was relatively high compared to chromium and copper, indicating that there is still a relatively high unfixed arsenic and zinc components after complete chromium fixation in CCA-and CCFZ-treated samples, respectively.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the behaviors of synthesis of Calcium Chloroaluminte($11CaO{\cdot}7Al_2O_3{\cdot}CaCl_2$) under the melting temperature of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash(MSWI fly ash); $900^{\circ}C-1300^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature. A sludge generated from a water purification plant (SW) was also used to fill up $Al_2O_3$ source, which might be deficient in MSWI fly ash. MF and SW were mixed at mixing ratio of 10 to 7, which is the mole ratio of CaO to $Al_2O_3$ of calcium Chloroaluminte. Mixed samples were sintered in the opened sintering reactor and the closed sintering reactor, respectively. The results showed that calcium chloroaluminte was formed at $1,000^{\circ}C$ in both reactors, but the temperature of decomposition of calcium chloroaluminte depended upon sintering reactor type; an opened sintering reactor and a closed sintering reactor, owing to the vaporization velocity of Cl.

  • Melt grafting of citraconic acid (CCA) onto an ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) with various peroxide initiators was performed using a Haake Rheocorder. Finding the optimum running condition and concentration is critical for effective grafting and performance of grafted material. Therefore, this study focused on the effects of mixing (reaction) condition and monomer/initiator dosages on the grafting degree, grafting efficiency and crosslinking degree (gel content), melt flow index and mechanical properties of CCA-g-EPDM. As the grafting degree/crosslinking degrees increased, the tensile strength increased significantly, but elongation at break and melt flow index decreased. The initiator 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butyl peroxy)-hexane (T-101) appeared to meet for the best grafting(2.31%). The grafting degree increased markedly with increasing monomer CCA/initiator T-101 contents. The grafting degree also increased with increasing mixing temperature/time, and then leveled off or decreased/increased a little. The optimum monomer/initiator dosages and reaction temperature/time were found to be about 5/0.05 wt% and $180^{\circ}C$/15min, respectively.

  • Several infectious agents are considered to be causes of cancer in human, mainly hepatitis B and C viruses, high-risk human pailloma viruses, Helicobacter pylori, Clonorchis sinensis, and Opisthorchis viverrini. Here we described the evident research and the association between Helicobacter spp. and biliary tract cancer particularly cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). Global epidemiological studies have suggested that Helicobacter spp. are possible risk factors for biliary tract diseases. Molecular studies support a linkage of Helicobacter spp. with CCA development. H. pylori, H. bilis, and H. hepaticus, are found in CCA, but the most common species are H. pylori and H. bilis. The type of CCA are associated with Helicobacter spp. include extrahepatic CCA, and common bile duct cancer. Up to the present, however, the results from different regions, materials and methods, sub-sites of cancer, and controls have not been consistent, thus introducing heterogeneity. Therefore, a comparison between co-Helicobacter spp.-CCA in the countries with low and high incident of CCA is required to settle the question. Furthermore, clarifying variation in the role of Helicobacter species in this CCA, including pathogenesis of CCA through enhanced biliary cell inflammation and proliferation, is necessary.
