  • Before we develop LVAFoam, a CFD software for launch vehicle analysis, we conducted a survey on other CFD softwares. We looked at in-house code and commercial CFD software of other countries that were used as a simulation of launch vehicle's combustor, turbopump and external flow. This research included in-house code solvers, developed by NASA, Mississippi State University, DLR, Bertin Technologies, CNES, CERFACS, and JAXA as well as commercial CFD software from FLUENT, CFX, Advance/FrontFlow/red, GASP, CRUNCH CFD, CFD-ACE+, FINETM/Turbo, STAR-CCM+. The simulation cases of launch vehicle analysis from each commercial softwares and introduction of the LVAFoam were presented.

  • CFD analysis is an analytical technique that applies a computer to the design and development of products across the entire industry for heat or fluid flow. This technology is used to shorten the development period and reduce costs through computerized simulation. However, the software used for CFD analysis is now required to use expensive foreign software. The Opensource CFD analysis software used in the proposed system has reliability of commercial CFD analysis software and has various user groups. However, for users who have expert knowledge, Opensource CFD software which supports only text interface environment, We have developed an environment that enables the construction of a CFD analysis environment for beginners as well as professionals. In addition, the proposed system supports the pre-processing (design and meshing) environment for CFD analysis and the environment for post-processing (result analysis & visualization), enabling the integrated CFD analysis process in one platform.

  • In a PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor), the appropriate heat removal from the surface of fuel rod bundle is important for ensuring thermal margins and safety. Although many CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software have been used to predict complex flows inside fuel assemblies with mixing vanes, there is no domestic regulatory guideline for the comprehensive evaluation of CFD software. Therefore, from the nuclear regulatory perspective, it is necessary to perform the systematic assessment and prepare the domestic regulatory guideline for checking whether valid CFD software is used for nuclear safety problems. In this study, to provide systematic evaluation and guidance on the applicability of CFD software to the domestic nuclear safety area, the results of the sensitivity analysis for the effect of the discretization scheme accuracy for the convection terms and turbulence models, which are main factors that contribute to the uncertainty in the calculation of the nuclear safety problems, on the prediction performance for the turbulent flow distribution inside the fuel assembly with split-type mixing vanes were explained.

  • Even if some CFD software developers and its users think that a state-of-the-art CFD software can be used to reasonably solve at least single-phase nuclear reactor safety problems, there remain limitations and uncertainties in the calculation result. From a regulatory perspective, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) is presently conducting the performance assessment of commercial CFD software for nuclear reactor safety problems. In this study, to examine the prediction performance of commercial CFD software with the porous model in the analysis of the scale-down APR (Advanced Power Reactor Plus) internal flow, a simulation was conducted with the on-board numerical models in ANSYS CFX R.14 and FLUENT R.14. It was concluded that depending on the CFD software, the internal flow distribution of the scale-down APR was locally somewhat different. Although there was a limitation in estimating the prediction performance of the commercial CFD software owing to the limited amount of measured data, CFX R.14 showed more reasonable prediction results in comparison with FLUENT R.14. Meanwhile, owing to the difference in discretization methodology, FLUENT R.14 required more computational memory than CFX R.14 for the same grid system. Therefore, the CFD software suitable to the available computational resource should be selected for massively parallel computations.

  • There are three different well-known methods for predicting the manoeuvrability of ships: (1) free running model test, (2) direct manoeuvring simulation using CFD and (3) system-based manoeuvring simulation. In this paper, the manoeuvrability of the KVLCC2 was estimated using CFD with rigid body motion and body force propeller method. The free running manoeuvre at the different time steps were also simulated. The yaw checking ability and the turning ability of KVLCC2 were predicted using CFD and could have been confirmed that the IMO criteria was satisfied. When the results were compared with the model test and system-based method, the free running simulation showed better agreement to that of the model test. It could also be confirmed that the results vary depending on the time step. Overall, the CFD results using the body force propeller method estimated most accurately the test results.

  • In 2007 the Nuclear Energy Agency's Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations published Best Practice Guidelines for the use of CFD in Nuclear Reactor Safety. This paper provides an overview of the document' contents and highlights a few of its recommendations. The document covers the full extent of a CFD analysis from initial problem definition and selection of an appropriate tool for the analysis, through final documentation of results. It provides advice on selection of appropriate simulation software, mesh construction, and selection of physical models. In addition it contains extensive discussion of the verification and validation process that should accompany any high-quality CFD analysis.

  • The preprocessor - solver - postprocessor software for 2D/Axisymmetric CSCM Upwind Flux Difference Splitting Navier-Stokes code has been developed for undergraduate educational purpose. This computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software allows students to setup, solve, visualize and control dynamically server for their own fluid problems via Internet. The preprocessor Is capable of generating geometry and grid, initial solution data and required solver control parameters. The postprocessor shows vector plot and contour plot with different options while residual plot shows root-mean-square (RMS) error history graphically and retrieves the data from solver interactively. Special feature of the preprocessor is grid generation part which is based on MFC/Visual C++ application and FORTRAN single block grid generator process. Many users can access solver via Internet from client computers and solve desired problems using locally installed pre- and postprocessor and remote powerful solver part.

  • Design of turbo-compressors has been considered to be a high-tech which only a few early industrialized countries could do efficiently since it requires not only deep understanding of high level gas dynamics and complex fluid dynamics but also accumulation of experiences in the feedback of expensive manufacturing and difficult testing to the design theory and empirical design coefficients. CFturbo is the turbomachinery design software which incorporates traditional well formulated German design technology and latest software technology of 3-dimensional graphics. Fine/Turbo is a powerful tubomachinery-oriented CFD package with quality structured grid topology templates for almost all the tubomachinery configurations for easy, fast and accurate CFD analysis. Rapid and effcient process off turbo-compressor R&D is setup with the combination of CFturbo and Fine/Turbo.
