  • In this study, the fabrication conditions of CFRP rebar were controlled to derive the correlation between flexural strength and pore characteristics. The fabrication conditions of CFRP rebar were adjusted for presence or absence of rib, resin temperature, and curing furnace temperature. Flexural strength and pore characteristics of fabricated CFRP rebar were analyzed. The flexural strength of CFRP rebar was changed depending on the fabrication condition, such as the presence or absence of rib, the resin temperature, and the curing furnace temperature. It was confirmed that the flexural strength of CFRP rebar was significantly lowered when the rib was not wound. As a result of Nano X-ray CT analysis, the max. pore diameter was shown in CFRP rebar prepared at a resin temperature of 60℃. According to optical microscopic analysis, the maximum porosity was 6.89% in No. 1, and the minimum porosity was 2.88% in No. 7. The correlation coefficient between porosity used optical microscopy and flexural strength was -0.64, which was higher than the correlation coefficient between porosity or pore size used Nano X-ray CT and flexural strength.

  • Several reinforced concrete structures that get deteriorated by rebar corrosion are retrofitted using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). When rebar comes in direct contact with CFRP, rebar may corrode, as iron is more active than carbon. Progression of corrosion of rebar in strengthened RC structures has been carried out when rebar comes in direct contact with CFRP. The experimentation is carried out in two phases. In phase I, corrosion of bare steel bar is monitored by making its contact with CFRP. In phase II, concrete specimens with surface bonded CFRP were casted and subjected to the realistic exposure conditions keeping direct contact between rebar and CFRP. Progression of corrosion has been monitored by various parameters: Half-cell potential, Tafel extrapolation and Linear Polarisation Resistance. On termination of exposure, to find residual bond stress between rebar and concrete, pull-out test was performed. Rebar in contact with CFRP has shown substantially higher corrosion. The level of corrosion will be more with more area of contact.

  • The effects of surface treatment method of reinforcing fiber on the bonding strength between carbon fiber reinforced polymer rebar (CFRP rebar) and high strength concrete have been evaluated in this study. The structural PVA fiber is coated with a proprietary hydrophobicoiling agent and crimped type polyolefin based structural synthetic fiber is deformed with a geometrical modification were used for the reinforcing fiber. The compressive tests have been performed to evaluate the strength property of high strength concrete depending on the surface treatment method of fiber. The bonding property between the high strength concrete and the CFRP rebar was evaluated by means of direct bonding test. The test results indicated that the surface treatment method of fiber effect on the bonding behavior of high strength concrete and CFRP rebar. Also, as the development and propagation of splitting cracks were controled by adding fibers into the high strength concrete, the bonding behavior, bond strength and relative bonding strength of CFRP rebar and high strength concrete were significantly improved.

  • To address the problems caused by the corrosion of steel rebar, active research has recently been carried out on members where fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is used in place of rebar. As FRP bar is highly brittle and has a low modulus of elasticity, further research is needed on the evaluation of serviceability, in other words on the deflection of flexural concrete members reinforced with FRP rebars. Taking the reinforcement ratio as a variable, this paper analyzes the flexural capacity of concrete beams reinforced with CFRP rebar. The test results of specimens reinforced with CFRP rebar show an increase in stiffness and resisting force along with an increase in the reinforcement ratio. A reinforcement ratio of about 1.3 is needed for the member reinforced with CFRP rebar to show same section property of a steel member. Through a comparison for the value of an effective moment of inertia, the equation suggested by Bischoff & Scanlon predicted values closest to the actual results.

  • FRP reinforcing bars(rebars) are produced through a variety of manufacturing process includes pultrusion, and filament winding and braiding etc. Each manufacturing method produces a different surface condition of FRP rebar. The surface properties of FRP rebar is an important property for mechanical bond with concrete. Current methods of providing surface deformation to FRP rebars include helical wrapping, surfaces and coating and rib molding. The problem with the helical wrapping method is that it can not provide enough surface deformation for good bond and it can be easily sheard off from the FRP rebars. Sand coating and rib molding provide surface deformation only to the outer FRP skins. Therefore, FRP rebar has about 60% of bond strength of steel rebar. The main objective was to evaluate the bond properties of FRP rebar after environmental exposure. Five types of FRP rebar includes CFRP ISO, GFRP Aslan, AFRP Technora CFRP(Korea), and GFRP(Korea) rebars performed direct bond tests. Also, FRP rebar bond specimens were subjected to exposure conditions including alkaline solution, acid solution, salt solution and deionized water etc. According to bond test results, CFRP(Korea) and CFRP(Korea) rebars were found to have better bond strength with concrete than previous FRP rebars. Also, FRP(Korea) rebar had more than about 70% in bond strength of steel rebar.

  • This study is to relate the bond characteristics of CFRP rebar in high strength concrete incorporated with silica fume(SF) and metakaolin(MK). An direct bond test were performed to evaluate the effect of SF and MK on bond properties of high-strength concrete and CFRP rebar. The high strength concrete mix included four SF and MK mixes with 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%. Results of bond performance experiment in relation to pullout vs slip behavior of FRP rebar and high strength showed better performance of SF than MK. Also, the results showed the improved bond strength as replacement ratio of SF and MK increased. The relative bond strength in which $1.3{\sim}3.2$ of estimated values were obtained.

  • Recently, research has been carried out into the use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), which has good tensile strength and corrosion resistance, as an alternative to rebar. But as of yet, the research into fatigue failure of CFRP is insufficient. In this paper, an analysis was performed of the mechanical behavior and failure patterns of CFRP reinforced concrete beams according to static and cyclic loads, in order to evaluate the safety and validity of CFRP rebar as an alternative material for rebar. The cyclic load ranged from 10 % to 70% of the ultimate load, and was loaded at a speed of 3Hz using a sine wave in the form of a three-point loading method. Through the static load test, the maximum load or stiffness of the beam was found to increase remarkably with the increase of the reinforcement, but the fatigue test showed that the number of repetitions decreased and the amount of deflection increased with the increase of the reinforcement.

  • The demand for FRPs that are corrosion-free and have an excellent tensile strength-to-weight ratio. However, there is a lack of research on the mechanical properties of FRP in the form of rebars, especially the changes in performance due to heating. Therefore, in this paper, 60 tensile and compression specimens of CFRP rebars with a diameter of 12 mm were fabricated and subjected to direct tensile and direct compression tests, and their performance was evaluated according to the heating temperature. It was found that as the heating temperature increases above 300 ℃, the performance decrease becomes larger due to the burning of epoxy. The compressive strength was found to be much lower than the tensile strength, but the modulus of elasticity was found to be the same in tension and compression.

  • Reinforced concrete(R/C) structures need repair and rehabilitation due to the deterioration such as a crack, spalling and disintergration. Numerous repair materials which are currently used in construction fields without any regulation are examined in terms of their serviceabilities and effectiveness. In this paper section of existing R/C beams are enlarged with repair materials, that is, epoxy, latex or premix. And then they are strengthened with rebar, steel poate of CFRP on the tension face. Structural behaviors of strengthened beams are investigated both statically and dynamically and they are compared with each. This paper summarizes the overall research plan.
