  • Common-mode noise (CMN) is an unresolved problem in wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) systems. In a WCE system, CMN originates from various electric currents found within the human body or external interference sources and causes critical demodulation performance degradation. The differential operation, a typical method for the removal of CMN rejection, can remove CMN by subtracting two signals simultaneously received by two reception sensors attached to a human body. However, when there is impedance mismatching between the two reception sensors, the differential operation method cannot completely remove CMN. Therefore, to overcome this problem, we propose an enhanced CMN rejection method. The proposed method performs not only subtraction but also addition between two received signals. Then a CMN ratio can be estimated by sufficient accumulation of division operation outcomes between the subtraction and addition outputs during the guard period. Finally, we can reject the residual CMN by combining the subtraction and addition outputs.

  • Curcumin (CMN) is known to have beneficial role in anorexia, coryza, cough, diabetic wounds, and hepatic disorders apart from its inherent antioxidant effects. Therefore, the present study was aimed to evaluate antioxidant effect of CMN in prevention of nephrolithiasis in rats-induced by ethylene glycol (EG) and Vitamin D3 (Vit. D3). Male Wistar rats (175 - 200 g) were randomized in groups like control, EG + Vit. D3 induced nephrolithiatiatic rats, CMN treated rats, CMN + EG + Vit. D3 treated rats, Vit. E + EG + Vit. D3 treated rats. Urine was collected weekly throughout the experimental protocol and estimated for calcium oxalate (CaO) count. After completion of experimental protocol serum was estimated for blood urea nitrogen and creatinine. Both the kidneys were excised and used to evaluate levels of biomarkers of oxidative stress and calcium oxalate crystal deposition by histopathological studies. Administration of EG and Vit. D3 to rats resulted in increased oxidative stress, hyperoxaluria and renal deposition of CaO crystals. Supplementation with CMN improves kidney function, reduces elevated oxidative stress, urinary oxalate level and renal deposition of CaO which shows its protective action in nephrolithiasis. The increased deposition of stone in the kidney and stone forming constituents of nephrolithiatic rats were effectively lowered by treatment of CMN.

  • Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the possibility that curcumin (CMN) protects against methotrexate (MTX)-induced testicular damage by affecting the phospho-p38 (p-p38) mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways. Methods: Eighteen male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups. The control group was given an intragastric administration of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) daily for 14 days, the MTX group was given a single intraperitoneal dose of MTX (20 mg/kg) on the 11th day, and the MTX+CMN group was given intragastric CMN (100 mg/kg/day, dissolved in DMSO) for 14 days and a single intraperitoneal dose of MTX (20 mg/kg) on the 11th day. At the end of the experiment, all animals were sacrificed and the testicular tissues were removed for morphometry, histology, and immunohistochemistry. Body and testicular weights were measured. Results: Body weights, seminiferous tubule diameter, and germinal epithelium height significantly decreased in the MTX group compared to the control group. Whereas, the number of histologically damaged seminiferous tubules and interstitial space width significantly increased in the MTX group. In addition, the number of p-p38 MAPK immunopositive cells and the immunoreactivity of NF-κB also increased in the MTX group compared to the control group. CMN improved loss of body weight, morphometric values, and histological damage due to MTX. CMN also reduced the number of p-p38 MAPK immunopositive cells and the NF-κB immunoreactivity. Conclusion: CMN may reduce MTX-induced testicular damage by suppressing the p38 MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways.

  • Cervical cancer is associated with low antioxidant status. It has a high prevalence especially amongst woman in Asia and is a leading cause of cancer death. Cancer chemotherapy in vivo improved in cases with high p53 expression in the tumor tissue. The restoration of p53 levels could be a potential strategy to increase chemoresponsiveness. Under circumstances where damage is extensive, p53 plays a direct role in trigering apoptosis. To investigate the effect of curcumin (CMN) as an antioxidant agent on anticancer agent 5-fluorouracil (5FU) induced apoptosis and p53 expression, HPV-18 positive HeLa cells were treated with noncytotoxic amounts of antioxidant. Curcumin induced apoptosis in cervical cancer cells. Morphological hallmarks of apoptosis such as nuclear fragmentation and internucleosomal fragmentation of DNA were observed. CMN caused upregulation of p53 expression, evident from Western blotting data and also increased the susceptibility/apoptosis induced by 5FU. These results show that increasing drug sensitivity of cervical cancer cells by upregulation of p53 using CMN is novel approach and could have a possible therapeutic potential in cervical cancer.

  • Channel distortion degrades the performance of speech recognizer in telephone environment. It mainly results from the bandwidth limitation and variation of transmission channel. Variation of channel characteristics is usually represented as baseline shift in the cepstrum domain. Thus undesirable effect of the channel variation can be removed by subtracting the mean from the cepstrum. In this paper, to improve the recognition performance of Korea connected digit telephone speech, channel compensation methods such as CMN (Cepstral Mean Normalization), RTCN (Real Time Cepatral Normalization), MCMN (Modified CMN) and MRTCN (Modified RTCN) are applied to the static MFCC. Both MCMN and MRTCN are obtained from the CMN and RTCN, respectively, using variance normalization in the cepstrum domain. Using HTK v3.1 system, recognition experiments are performed for Korean connected digit telephone speech database released by SITEC (Speech Information Technology & Industry Promotion Center). Experiments have shown that MRTCN gives the best result with recognition rate of 90.11% for connected digit. This corresponds to the performance improvement over MFCC alone by 1.72%, i.e, error reduction rate of 14.82%.

  • Background: Cervical cancer (CeCa) is the second most common cancer in women in developing countries, and human papilloma virus (HPV) is the primary etiological factor. Aberrant expression of HOX transcription factors has been observed in several types of cancer. To date, however, no reports exist on the expression of HOXB2 and HOXB13 proteins during neoplastic progression in CeCa and its correlation with HPV infection. Materials and Methods: Expression of HOXB2 and HOXB13 proteins was assessed in tissue microarrays from normal cervical epithelium, cervical intraepithelial neoplasias grade 1-3, and CeCa. HPV was detected by PCR and sequencing. Expression of HOX-positive cells was determined in each diagnostic group. Results: Percentage of HOXB2- and HOXB13-positive cells gradually increased from means of 10.9% and 16.7%, respectively, in samples from healthy women, to 75.2% and 88.6% in those from CeCa patients. Frequency of HPV infection also increased from 13% in healthy tissue samples to 92.3% in CeCa. Both HOXB2 and HOXB13 proteins were preferentially expressed in HPV+ samples. Conclusions: The present study represents the first report on the expression of both HOXB2 and HOXB13 proteins through cervix tumorigenesis, providing evidence that increased expression of such proteins is a common event during progression to CeCa.

  • The crystal structure of A2+(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3,(A2+=Sr2+ and Ca2+)ceramics was studied usig X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electrion microscopy(HRTEM). Ba(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (SMN) has the 1:2 ordered monoclinic structure which has the anti-phase tilt of octahedra. The type of tilting in SMN was considered to be a$^{\circ}$a$^{\circ}$c- or aac$^{\circ}$ Ca(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (CMN) also has the 1:2 ordered monoclinic structure which was distorted by the anti-phase tilt or in-phsae tilt of octahedra. A unit cell containing both the in-phase tilt axis and anti-phase tilt axis was not observed in the CMN. Therefore CMN has the mixed phase consisting of the 1:2 ordered monoclinic phase with anti-phase tilt of octahedra and the one with in -phase tilt of ocatahedra,. The anti-parallel shift of cation was also observed in the CMN.

  • Improving the recognition performance of connected digit telephone speech still remains a problem to be solved. As a basic study for it, this paper analyzes the variation of feature parameters of Korean digit telephone speech according to channel distortion. As a feature parameter for analysis and recognition MFCC is used. To analyze the effect of telephone channel distortion depending on each call, MFCCs are first obtained from the connected digit telephone speech for each phoneme included in the Korean digit. Then CMN, RTCN, and RASTA are applied to the MFCC as channel compensation techniques. Using the feature parameters of MFCC, MFCC+CMN, MFCC+RTCN, and MFCC+RASTA, variances of phonemes are analyzed and recognition experiments are done for each case. Experimental results are discussed with our findings and discussions

  • In this paper, the pole filtering concept is applied to the Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) feature vectors in the conventional cepstral mean normalization (CMN) and cepstral mean and variance normalization (CMVN) frameworks. Additionally, performance of the cepstral mean and scale normalization (CMSN), which uses scale normalization instead of variance normalization, is evaluated in speech recognition experiments in noisy environments. Because CMN and CMVN are usually performed on a per-utterance basis, in case of short utterance, they have a problem that reliable estimation of the mean and variance is not guaranteed. However, by applying the pole filtering and scale normalization techniques to the feature normalization process, this problem can be relieved. Experimental results using Aurora 2 database (DB) show that feature normalization method combining the pole-filtering and scale normalization yields the best improvements.
