  • Purpose: Nurungji is a traditional Korean food made by yellowish scorched rice. After getting gelatinization of rice, a thin crust of scorched rice will usually be left in the bottom of the traditional cooking pot. In this study, physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant properties of five commercial nurungji products (CNP1, CNP2, CNP3, CNP4, and CNP5) were evaluated. Methods: Physicochemical properties of the five commercial nurungji products were evaluated with AOAC method. The antioxidant activities were assessed using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azinobis-(3-ethyl-benozothia zoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and reducing power assays. Results: Water content was the highest in CNP3, followed by CNP1, CNP2, CNP5, and CNP4. Crude ash content of all nurungji was less than 1%. In Hunter color parameter, the significantly highest a value (redness) and b value (yellowness) were measured in the CNP4 product, meanwhile the lowest in CNP3 (p<0.05). The nurungji products of CNP4 and CNP5 had the significantly higher content in total polyphenols and total flavonoids, compared to those of other products. CNP3 and CNP2 had the lowest in total polyphenols and total flavonoids, respectively. CNP4 and CNP5 products showed the significantly higher values in antioxidant activities, whereas CNP3 had the lowest activity. Conclusion: The high value of antioxidant activities in CNP4 and CNP5 might have been affected primarily by the total polyphenols with increasing browning color during the heat treatment.

  • A 35-day trial was carried out to determine the influence of dietary cinnamon powder (CNP) on the sensory evaluation and quality of chicken meat, carcass characteristics, plasma lipid level and growth performance of broiler chickens. There were 5 treatment groups: control; CNP 2.0%; CNP 3.0%; CNP 4.0%; and CNP 5.0%. The body weight of the broilers fed the diets containing 3.0% CNP was higher than the broilers fed the control feeds (p<0.05). The concentration of triacylglyceride, HDL-C was higher in the plasma from broiler chickens fed diets with CNP (p<0.05) but the concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-C were significantly lower (p<0.05) compared to the control group. The carcass percentage, chicken breast and thigh weight were not different between the CNP and control groups. The WHC was significantly higher in the chickens fed 4% CNP diet, while the TBARS was significantly lower (p<0.05) in the chickens fed 3% CNP diet compared to the control group. The color of the breast muscle from the chickens fed 3% CNP diet was lighter than those from the control groups (p<0.05). The sensory evaluation of the taste and savor related to CNP in fried or boiled chicken meat were significantly better from the broiler chicken fed diets containing CNP than the control group (p<0.05). These results suggest that dietary cinnamon powder may improve savor and quality of chicken meat in broiler chickens.

  • In order to determine the possibility of reducing rice injury caused by CNP and butachlor application, the effects of IAA seed presoaking on CNP and butachlor action against early growth of rice seedlings were investigated under flooded direct-seeding and dry-seeded conditions. CNP and butachlor injury to rice was reduced by soaking rice seeds at 0.1, 1.0 and 10ppm of IAA solution for 36 hours before seeding under flooded condition and thus shoot length and dry weight of rice seedlings increased compared with those of IAA untreated seedlings. IAA seed pretreatment also overcame the inhibitory effect of CNP and butachlor under dry-seeded condition. Effect on reducing rice injury by IAA pretreatment was more remarkable when CNP applied under dry seeded condition and butachlor under flooded condition.

  • Calcineurin (Cn) is a serine/threonine phosphatase implicated in a wide variety of biological responses. To identify proteins that mediate Cn signaling pathway effects, we used yeast two-hybrid assays to screen for Cn interacting proteins, discovering a protein encoded by the gene, cnp-2 (Y46G5A.10). Utilizing serially deleted forms of Cn as baits, we demonstrated that the catalytic domain of Cn (TAX-6) binds with CNP-2, and this physical interaction was able to be reconstituted in vitro, supporting our yeast two-hybrid results. cnp-2 is a nematode-specific novel gene found in C. elegans as well as its closest relative, C. briggsae. CNP-2 was strongly expressed in the intestine of C. elegans. To study the function of cnp-2, we performed cnp-2 RNAi knock-down and characterized phenotypes associated with Cn mutants. However, no gross defects were revealed in these RNAi experiments. CNP-2 was proven to be a Cn binding protein; however, its role remains to be elucidated.

  • Calcineurin (Cn) is a calcium/calmodulin-dependent serine/threonine protein phosphatase that has diverse functions in different cell types and organisms. We screened proteins interacting with the C. elegans CnA homolog, TAX-6, by the yeast two-hybrid system. CNP-3 (Calcineurin interacting protein-3) is a novel protein that physically interacts with the catalytic domain of TAX-6. It is strongly expressed in the nuclei of intestine, hypodermis, dorsal uterine regions and spermatheca. Expression begins around the 60-cell stage and proceeds during all larval stages and the adult. To elucidate the biological function of cnp-3 we isolated a cnp-3 deletion mutant. Since CNP-3 binds CnA, we looked at factors associated with calcineurin loss-of-function mutants, such as brood size, body size, serotonin- and levamisole-mediated egg-laying behavior. The cnp-3(jh145) single mutant had no gross defects compared to wild-type animal. However, the phenotypes of the double mutants, tax-6(p675);cnp-3(jh145) and cnb-1(jh103);cnp-3(jh145), were more severe in terms of brood size, body size and serotonin-mediated egg-laying defects than tax-6(p675) and cnb-1(jh103), respectively. These results suggest that dysfunction of cnp-3 enhances certain calcineurin loss-of-function phenotypes in C. elegans.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of pit and fissure sealant containing cerium oxide nano particles(CNP). Used to mix with pit and fissure sealant (ConciseTM, USA). CNP was added into liquid (0- 4.0 wt%) of pit and fissure sealant. The specimens for the vickers hardness (VHN; 10 × 2 mm), Three-point flexure (FS; 2 × 2 × 25 mm) with flexure modulus (FM) were obtained from cements at 1, 7, and 14 days after storing in (37±1)℃ distilled water. All mechanical strength tests were conducted using machine (Instron 3344) with a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Duncan posthoc test(p<0.05). Mechanical properties of conventional pit and fissure sealant could be enhanced by addition of CNP. Three-point flexure and modulus of pit and fissure sealant containing CNP were showed a slightly higher value not significantly with the group(p>0.05). The vickers hardness values were increase significantly with incubation time(p<0.05). Results indicated that CNP can be used considered as potential reinforcing agent for increasing mechanical properties for conventional pit and fissure sealant. Therefore, it was suggest that the additional effects of CNP and research on a wide range of substances.

  • In this study, Ni and tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles are simultaneously synthesized with the mesoporous carbon nanoparticles (CNP) using a solution plasma processing (SPP) in the benzene. The Ni and WC nanoparticles were formed through the sputtering effect of electrodes during discharge, and mean time CNP were formed through reduction reaction. TEM observation showed that loaded Ni and WC nanoparticles were evenly dispersed on the CNP. The results of electrochemical analysis demonstrated that an introduction of Ni nanoparticles promoted to improve catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Moreover, Ni-WC/CNP lead to fast electron transfer process compared to that of WC/CNP. Therefore, the inexpensive Ni-WC/CNP might be a promising as catalytic material for cathodes in fuel cell applications.

  • We propose nano-scale Cu direct bonding technology using ultra-high density Cu nano-pillar (CNP) with for high stacking yield exascale 2.5D/3D integration. We clarified the joining mechanism of nano-scale Cu direct bonding using CNP. Nano-scale Cu pillar easily bond with Cu electrode by re-crystallization of CNP due to the solid phase diffusion and by morphology change of CNP to minimize interfacial energy at relatively lower temperature and pressure compared to conventional micro-scale Cu direct bonding. We confirmed for the first time that 4.3 million electrodes per die are successfully connected in series with the joining yield of 100%. The joining resistance of CNP bundle with $80{\mu}m$ height is around 30 m for each pair of $10{\mu}m$ dia. electrode. Capacitance value of CNP bundle with $3{\mu}m$ length and $80{\mu}m$ height is around 0.6fF. Eye-diagram pattern shows no degradation even at 10Gbps data rate after the lamination of anisotropic conductive film.
