Dielectric Properties of Liquid Crystalline Polymers and $CaTiO_3-LaAlO_3$ Composites for Embedded Matching Capacitors (내장형 capacitor를 위한 LCP와 $CaTiO_3-LaAlO_3$ 복합재의 유전특성)

  • We manufactured Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) and (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 (CT-LA) ceramic composites and investigated dielectric properties to use as embedded capacitor in printed circuit boards and replace LTCC substrate. The dielectric properties of these composites are varied with volume fraction of CT-LA and ratios of CT/LA. Dielectric constants are in the range of 3~15. In addition, we could get low TCC and High Q value that could not achieve in other ceramic-polymer composites. Especially, in composite with x=0.01 and 30 vol% CT-LA, the dieletric constant and Q-value are 10 and 200, respectively. And more TCC is $-28{\sim}300ppm/^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range of $-55{\sim}125^{\circ}C$. We think that this composites can be used high-Q substrate material like LTCC and embedded temperature compensation capacitor in printed circuit boards.

Polysiponia morrowii Extract Inhibits Cancer Growth on CT-26 and Hela cells

  • Cancer is an unfavorable human disease, and the treatment commonly have side effects and can be ineffective. Since exploration and development of cancer treatment drugs is particularly demanding, this study aimed to investigate the anticancer activities of Polysiponia morrowii extract s (PME) on CT-26 and HeLa cells. The results showed that PME inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, with IC50 values of 41.04% in CT-26 and 48.51% in HeLa cell cultures. Moreover, cytological observation using Hoechst 33342 staining assay showed typical apoptotic morphology in both cancer cells, and production of sub-G1 DNA was induced by PME treatment in a dose-dependent manner, with 34.41% in CT-26 and 46.01% in HeLa cell cultures. These findings suggest that PME may have potential preventive effects or medicinal value in the treatment of colorectal and cervical cancers.

Effects of Various Bioreactors on Growth and Ginsenoside Accumulation in Ginseng Adventitious Root Cultures(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) (다양한 생물반응기 형태가 인삼(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) 부정근의 생장과 Ginsenoside 생산에 미치는 영향)

  • The type of air lift bioreactor affected the root growth in ginseng adventitious root cultures. Among bioreactors used in this experiment, bulb type bubble bioreactor (BU) was the best to increase root growth (41.92 g dry weight). The kLa value representing the oxygen transfer capacity from medium to explants (6.98 h$^{-1}$ ) in BU with 5 cm bubble column was higher than other bioreactors. On the other hand, cylindric tube bioreactor (CT) without bubble column resulted in minimum root growth (38.55 g dry weight) and kLa value (5.25 h$^{-1}$ ). Furthermore, the root growth (50.30 g dry weight) in BU with 10 cm bubble column more increased than 5 cm bubble column. However, the kLa value do not affected the secondary metabolite such as ginsenosides. These results show that the bubble column in air lift bioreactor increase kLa value and increased kLa value stimulate the growth of ginseng adventitious roots.

Cathodic Polarization Measurements on La0.9Sr0.1MnO3 Electrode for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

  • Cathodic oxygen reduction kinetics on $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}MnO_3$ electrode have been examined at $700-900^{\circ}C$ under various oxygen partial pressures. AC impedance and current interruption techniques were employed for the determination of charge transfer resistances for electrochemical oxygen reduction. The $R_{ct}$ values obtained from two different methods were very close each other for $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}MnO_3$ electrode. Activation energy for the electrochemical oxygen reduction was found to be 174kJ/mol under atmospheric oxygen pressure. $R_{ct}$ measurements as a function of oxygen partial pressure indicate that the rate-determining step for the electrochemical oxygen reduction on $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}MnO_3$ electrode is the charge transfer process.

  • 본 연구에서는 우리나라의 중 소규모 유역의 수문학적 위험도 분석을 위하여 한강유역을 대상으로 통합위험지수(IRI: Integrated Risk Index)를 산정하였으며, El Ni$\tilde{n}$o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)에 의한 대규모 대기순환 패턴의 변화가 한강 유역의 통합위험지수 변화에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. ENSO자료는 전통적인 El Ni$\tilde{n}$o에 해당하는 Cold-tongue (CT) El Ni$\tilde{n}$o와 중앙태평양 부근의 이상적인 해수면 온도 상승에 의한 Warm-pool (WP) El Ni$\tilde{n}$o, 그리고 해수면 온도가 이상적으로 낮게 관측되는 La Ni$\tilde{n}$a 기간으로 구분하였으며, 각 기간 중 가장 강한 ENSO가 발생한 해(CT El Ni$\tilde{n}$o, 1998; WP El Ni$\tilde{n}$o, 2005; La Ni$\tilde{n}$a, 2000)를 대상으로 통합위험지수를 산정하였다. 통합위험지수는 수문학적 요인(Hydrologic Components), 사회 경제적 요인(Socio-Economic Components)과 생태적 요인(Ecological Components)으로 구분하였고, 엔트로피(entropy) 기법을 통하여 각 인자와 요인별 가중치를 적용하였다. 중권역별 통합위험지수의 평가는 5개의 계급구간(Very High, High, Medium, Low, Very Low)으로 구분하였다. 분석결과, CT El Ni$\tilde{n}$o해의 유역평균 IRI 값은 0.58, WP El Ni$\tilde{n}$o해의 IRI 값은 0.57로 비슷한 결과를 보였으나, La Ni$\tilde{n}$a해에는 IRI 값이 0.41로 낮게 나타났다. CT와 WP El Ni$\tilde{n}$o해에는 한강 서쪽일부 중권역에서 통합위험지수가 높게 나타났으며, La Ni$\tilde{n}$a해에는 한강 중 동부 대부분 유역에서 낮게 분석되었다. 향후 유역별 통합위험지수 산정과 더불어 서로 다른 형태의 ENSO에 따른 수자원 변동 예측이 이루어진다면, 수자원의 효율적인 관리와 안정적인 용수공급에 도움을 줄 것으로 사료되며, 이는 유역별 수자원의 취약성 평가 및 위험도 분석을 위한 기초자료로 활용이 가능하리라 사료된다.

Cytotoxic Activities of Green and Brown Seaweeds Collected from Jeju Island against Four Tumor Cell Lines

  • Methanolic and aqueous extracts from 37 seaweed species (10 green and 27 brown seaweeds) collected from Jeju Island coast were prepared at high ($70^{\circ}C$) and room ($20^{\circ}C$) temperatures and examined for cytotoxic activity against 4 tumor cell lines: U937 (human monoblastoid leukemia cell line), HL60 (human promyelocytic leukemia cell line), HeLa (woman cervical carcinoma cell line) and CT26 (mouse colon carcinoma line). Both MeOH extracts of Desmarestia tabacoides and Dictyota dichotoma possessed strong cytotoxic activities against all the tumor cell lines tested, but the aqueous extract exhibited no activity. On the other hand Ecklonia cava showed strong cytotoxic activities for the $20^{\circ}C$ aqueous extract against the three tumor cells except HeLa cell. Sagassum coreanum and Sagassum siliquastrum $20^{\circ}C$ aqueous extracts also exhibited strong cytotoxic activities against U937, HL60, HeLa cells. Even though green seaweeds showed less activity than brown seaweeds, $20^{\circ}C$ aqueous extracts of Codium contractum and Codium fragile exhibited strong cytotoxic activities against HL60 or CT26 cells, respectively.

Ce3+ sensitize RE3+ (RE=Dy, Tb, Eu, Sm) doped LaPO4 nanophosphor with white emission tunability

  • Crystalline $Ce^{3+}$ co-doped $LaPO_4$:RE ($RE=Dy^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$, $Eu^{3+}$, $Sm^{3+}$) and mix doped rare earth ions of $Dy^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$ and $Eu^{3+}$ were prepared by the polyol method at $150^{\circ}C$. Strongly enhance luminescence intensity is obtained with the co-doping of $Ce^{3+}$ with $LaPO_4$:$Dy^{3+}$ and $LaPO_4$:$Tb^{3+}$ due to charge transfer (CT) occurring from $Ce^{3+}$ to $Dy^{3+}$ and $Ce^{3+}$ to $Tb^{3+}$, where as there is no significant changes in luminescence intensity of $Ce^{3+}$ co-doped $Eu^{3+}$ and $Sm^{3+}$ doped $LaPO_4$ samples. The luminescence color can be tuned from green to white by varying the excitation wavelength for the mix ions $Ce^{3+}$, $Dy^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$ and $Eu^{3+}$ doped with $LaPO_4$.

Warm Season Hydro-Meteorological Variability in South Korea Due to SSTA Pattern Changes in the Tropical Pacific Ocean Region (열대 태평양 SSTA 패턴 변화에 따른 우리나라 여름철 수문 변동 분석)

  • In this study, we analyzed the effects of regional hydrologic variability during warm season (June-September) in South Korea due to ENSO (El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$-Southern Oscillation) pattern changes over the Tropical Pacific Ocean (TPO). We performed composite analysis (CA) and statistical significance test by Student's t-test using observed hydrologic data (such as, precipitation and streamflow) in the 113 sub-watershed areas over the 5-Major River basin, in South Korea. As a result of this study, during the warm-pool (WP) El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ year shows a significant increasing tendency than normal years. Particularly, during the cold-tongue (CT) El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ decaying years clearly decreasing tendency compared to the normal years was appeared. In addition, the La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$ years tended to show a slightly increasing tendency and maintain the average year state. In addition, from the result of scatter plot of the percentage anomaly of hydrologic variables during warm season, it is possible to identify the linear increasing tendency. Also the center of the scatter plot shows during the WP El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ year (+17.93%, +26.99%), the CT El $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$ year (-8.20%, -15.73%), and the La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$ year (+8.89%, +15.85%), respectively. This result shows a methodology of the tele-connection based long-range water resources prediction for reducing climate forecasting uncertainty, when occurs the abnormal SSTA (such as, El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ and La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$) phenomenon in the TPO region. Furthermore, it can be a useful data for water managers and end-users to support long-range water-related policy making.

  • Ozonation is an effective process in providing microbiologically safe drinking water. The operation of the ozonation stage is often based on disinfection criteria which include security factors, such as the CT criterion. This type of ozonation management, which mat include large safety margins, will no longer be possible, since formation of ozonation byproducts has to be avoided. In order to reduce the security factor, a computerized tool to predict with more accuracy inactivation of micro-organisms in the ozonation process has been developed.
