  • A low voltage wire should be used considering that a load used in the end is a low voltage. In regard to these wires, there are needs for research about the wire thickness calculation in accordance with IEC standard because the standardization process for IEC (KS standard) was completed on June 30, 2005, and they stopped producing NEC-standard products by the order from Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under Ministry of Knowledge Economy (former Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy) since July 1, 2006. This study compared, in terms of the thickness calculation of low voltage wire, a reduction factor application by IEC standard about allowed current and an application for calculation of voltage drop. It also proposed the formula for IEC standard to decrease errors and resolve the difficulty of standardized calculation by analyzing the difference between simplified formula and standardized formula that are the most frequently used calculation method of voltage drop.

  • In EBCOT, the context modeling process takes excessive calculation time and this paper proposed a method to reduce this calculation time. That is, if the finest resolution coefficient is less than a pre-defined transfer factor the coefficient and its descendents skip the context modeling process. There is a trade-off relationship between the calculation time and the image quality or the amount of output data such that as this threshold value increases, the calculation time and the amount of output data decreases, but the image degradation increases. The experimental results showed that in this range the resulting reduction rate in calculation time was from 3% to 64% in average, the reduction rate in output data was from 32% to 73% in average.

  • Through the result of calculating the deviation between the value calculated from two-dimensional number formula, one-dimensional number interpretation, and curving part water surface type calculation method, we could confirmed that the deviation is reduced more than 50% when we use curving part water surface type calculation method. Also it was confirmed that there occurs the reduction rate of maximum 59% as the result of comparing with one-dimensional number interpretation since the reduction rate of safe room height was 20%, in 500 CMS of flood water quantity when we planted the construction of levee by curving part water surface type calculation method. And therefore, we have confirmed that the curving water surface type calculation method can be used as a simple formula in rivers with water quantity less than 500 CMS that flows in and out in Jess than 90 degree angle.

  • College of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, US Abstract The intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation of the ISO 13790 monthly method was examined. The current ISO 13790 method applies a reduction factor to the continuous heating and cooling need calculation result to derive the intermittent heating and cooling for each month. This paper proposes a method for the intermittent energy need calculation based on the internal mean temperature calculation. The internal temperature calculation procedure was introduced considering the heat-balance taking into account of heat gain, heat loss, and thermal inertia for reduced heating and cooling period. Then, the calculated internal mean temperature was used for the intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation. The calculation results from the proposed method were compared to the current ISO 13790 method and validated with a dynamic simulation using EnergyPlus. The study indicates that the intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation method using the proposed model improves transparency of the current ISO 13790 method and draws more rational outcomes in the monthly heating and cooling energy need calculation.

  • The considerations in the noise control by enclosure are the rise of temperature and sound pressure, transmission loss, absorption coefficient of the materials, the structure of the soundproof panels, an opening and coincidence frequency. But it is very difficult that we obtain the accurate data about those in design, so, the noise reduction after enclosing does not correspond with the calculation. The difference of the noise reduction between the calculation and the measurement was 8.2dBA, and we can obtain the approximate result as the following formula which correct 10dBA, safely.

  • The Monte Carlo calculation is the most accurate means of predicting radiation dose, but its accuracy is accompanied by an increase in the amount of time required to produce a statistically meaningful dose distribution. In this study, the effects on calculation time by introducing variance reduction techniques and increasing computing power, respectively, in the Monte Carlo dose calculation for a 6 MV photon beam from the Varian 600 C/D were estimated when maintaining accuracy of the Monte Carlo calculation results. The EGSnrcbased BEAMnrc code was used to simulate the beam and the EGSnrcbased DOSXYZnrc code to calculate dose distributions. Variance reduction techniques in the codes were used to describe reducedphysics, and a computer cluster consisting of ten PCs was built to execute parallel computing. As a result, time was more reduced by the use of variance reduction techniques than that by the increase of computing power. Because the use of the Monte Carlo dose calculation in clinical practice is yet limited by reducing the computational time only through improvements in computing power, introduction of reducedphysics into the Monte Carlo calculation is inevitable at this point. Therefore, a more active investigation of existing or new reducedphysics approaches is required.

  • One of important factors in designing array-type MEMS resonators is obtaining a desired frequency response function (FRF) within a specific range. In this paper Krylov subspace-based model order reduction using moment-matching with non-zero expansion points is represented to calculate the FRF of array-type resonators. By matching moments at a frequency around a specific range of the array-type resonators, required FRFs can be efficiently calculated with significantly reduced systems regardless of their operating frequencies. In addition, because of the characteristics of moment-matching method, a minimal order of reduced system with a specified accuracy can be determined through an error indicator using successive reduced models, which is very useful to automate the order reduction process and FRF calculation for structural optimization iterations.

  • The application of Monte Carlo (MC) to large-scale fixed-source problems has recently become possible with new hybrid methods that automate generation of parameters for variance reduction techniques. Two common variance reduction techniques, weight windows and source biasing, have been automated and popularized by the consistent adjoint-driven importance sampling (CADIS) method. This method uses the adjoint solution from an inexpensive deterministic calculation to define a consistent set of weight windows and source particles for a subsequent MC calculation. One of the motivations for source consistency is to avoid the splitting or rouletting of particles at birth, which requires computational resources. However, it is not always possible or desirable to implement such consistency, which results in inconsistent source biasing. This paper develops an original framework that mathematically expresses the coupling of the weight window and source biasing techniques, allowing the authors to explore the impact of inconsistent source sampling on the variance of MC results. A numerical experiment supports this new framework and suggests that certain classes of problems may be relatively insensitive to inconsistent source sampling schemes with moderate levels of splitting and rouletting.

  • One of important factors in designing MEMS resonators for RF filters is obtaining a desired frequency response function (FRF) within a specific frequency range of interest. Because various array-type MEMS resonators have been recently introduced to improve the filter characteristics such as bandwidth, pass-band, and shape factor, the degrees of freedom (DOF) of finite elements for their FRF calculation dramatically increases and therefore raises computational difficulties. In this paper the Krylov subspace-based model order reduction using moment-matching with non-zero expansion points is represented as a numerical solution to perform the frequency response analyses of those array-type MEMS resonators in an efficient way. By matching moments at a frequency around the specific operation range of the array-type resonators, the required FRF can be efficiently calculated regardless of their operating frequency from significantly reduced systems. In addition, because of the characteristics of the moment-matching method, a minimal order of reduced system with a prearranged accuracy can be determined through an error indicator using successive reduced models, which is very useful to automate the order reduction process and FRF calculation for structural optimization iterations. We also found out that the presented method could obtain the FRF of a $6\times6$ array-type resonator within a seventieth of the computational time necessary for the direct method and in addition FRF calculation by the mode superposition method could not even be completed because of a data overflow with a half after calculation of 9,722 eigenmodes.

  • This paper is to propose an algorithm to reduce the calculation time to perform the 2-dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform(2DWT). We call this algorithm as Reduced 2-dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transformation(R2DWT). This algorithm uses a modified Mallat-tree such that in each level, the column transform is performed only with the low-pass filtered row transform result. The resulting number of sub-band regions is 2L+1, meanwhile the original(2DWT) has 3L+1 sub-regions, where L is the transform level. To show the proposed algorithm is useful without much loss in SNR(Signal-to-Noise Ratio), we performed experiments with various images. The results showed that above 5:1 in compression ratio, the proposed algorithm has less than 0.SdB difference in SNR from 2DWT with about 25% reduction in calculation time.
