An Improved Battery Charging Algorithm for PV Battery Chargers (태양광 배터리 충전기를 위한 개선된 충전 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, the proposed charging algorithm is converted from the charging mode to compensate the transient state in the solar battery charging system. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control methods and the various charging algorithms for the optimal battery charging are reviewed. The proposed algorithm has excellent transient characteristics compare to the previous algorithm by adding the optimal control method to compensate the transient state when the charging mode switches from the constant current mode to the constant voltage mode based on the conventional constant-current constant-voltage (CC-CV) charging algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified by simulations and experimental results.

  • The proposed battery charger presented in this paper is suitable for Lead-Acid Battery and the dc/dc buck converter topology is applied as a charger circuit. The technique adopted in this charger is constant current & constant voltage dual mode, which is decided by the value of voltage of proposed battery. Automatic mode change function is detected by the percentage value of level of battery charging. CC Mode (Constant Current Mode) is operated when charging level is below 80% of the total charging of Battery voltage and above 80% of battery voltage charging, CV Mode (Constant Voltage Mode) is automatically operated. As the charging level exceeds 120%, it automatically terminates charging. The feedback signal to the PWM generator for charging the battery is controlled by using the current and voltage measurement circuits simultaneously. This technique will degrade the damage of proposed type of battery and improve the power efficiency of charger. Finally, a prototype charger circuit designed for a 12-V 7-Ah lead acid battery is constructed and tested to confirm the theoretical predictions. Satisfactory performance is obtained from simulation and the experimental results.

A Design and Control of Bi-directional Non-isolated DC-DC Converter with Coupled Inductors for Rapid Electric Vehicle Charging System

  • This paper presents a simple and cost-effective stand-alone rapid battery charging system of 30kW for electric vehicles. The proposed system mainly consists of active front-end rectifier of neutral point clamped 3-level type and non-isolated bi-directional dc-dc converter of multi-phase interleaved half-bridge topology with coupled inductors. The charging system is designed to operate for both lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries. The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charging mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. The pre-charging mode employs the staircase shaped current profile to accomplish shorter charging time while maintaining the reliable operation of the battery. The proposed system is able to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 67A. The optimal discharging algorithm for Vehicle to the Grid (V2G) operation has been adopted to maintain the discharging current of 1C. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system.

  • According to revolutionary developments in automobile technologies, eco-friendly advanced vehicles (hybrid vehicle, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, electric vehicle, etc.) are rapidly increasing. The electromagnetic compatibility is getting more important for development of a vehicle because those advanced vehicles are driven by electric energy and equipped with more electric systems. In general, electromagnetic compatibility tests consist of an electromagnetic interference(EMI) test and an electromagnetic susceptibility(EMS) test. EMI test of the electric vehicles are needed not only in driving mode but also in charging mode because they must be recharged by much electric energy for driving. Depending on vehicle manufacturers, the charging device type and the location of charging device inlet in electric vehicles are various. In this paper, in order to investigate EMI of electric vehicles in charging mode in consideration of the direction of measuring antenna and the location of charging device inlet, a series of electromagnetic emission tests are conducted using three electric vehicles (neighborhood electric vehicle, electric vehicle and electric vehicle-bus). The test results show that electromagnetic emission measurements in charging mode are dependent on the direction of measuring antenna and the location of charging device inlet.

The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charging mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. Each mode is operated according to battery states: voltage, current and State of Charging (SOC). The proposed system is able to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 67A. The optimal discharging algorithm for Vehicle to the Grid (V2G) operation has been adopted to maintain the discharging current of 1C. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system. Experiment waveforms confirm the proposed functionality of the charging system.

  • In this paper, the proposed charging system consists of step charging mode and time-sharing equalization charging mode. As $\Delta$V=O point is detected, the proposed cut-off method will selectively cut off the only battery to reach the $\Delta$V=O point, preventing serial-connected batteries from undercharging. In the start of each step, the equalization charging mode is performed to reduce the capacity difference among the batteries. Though it is added to simple circuit for selective cut-off, comparing with recently used step-charging method, this system can improve the life cycle of battery and charging efficiency, and be also very effective for preventing the batteries from overcharging and undercharging.

Evaluation of Hydrogen Embrittlement of High Strength Steel for Automobiles by Small Punch Test (소형펀치시험을 이용한 자동차용 고강도강 수소취성 평가)

  • The hydrogen embrittlement of high strength steel for automobiles was evaluated by small punch (SP) test. The test specimens were fabricated to be 5 series, having various chemical compositions according to the processes of heat treatment and working. Hydrogen charging was electrochemically conducted for each specimen with varying of current density and charging time. It was shown that the SP energy and the maximum load decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time in every specimen. SEM investigation results for the hydrogen containing samples showed that the fracture behavior was a mixed fracture mode having 50% dimples and 50% cleavages. However, the fracture mode of specimens with charging hydrogen changed gradually to the brittle fracture mode, compared to the mode of other materials. All sizes and numbers of dimples decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time. These results indicate that hydrogen embrittlement is the major cause of fracture for high strength steels for automobiles; also, it is shown that the small punch test is a valuable test method for hydrogen embrittlement of high strength sheet steels for automobiles.

Development of the Switching Mode Conversion Type Pulse Charger for the Lead Battery of Solar Cell Generator Equipment by Fly-Back Converter Method (플라이백 컨버터방법에 의한 태양광발전설비의 납축전지 스위칭모드 전환형 펄스충전기 개발)

  • In this paper, the switching mode conversion type pulse charger by fly-back converter method for lead battery of the solar cell generator equipment is proposed. And we propose the control circuit and design method of insulated switching mode convert type pulse charger by fly-back convert method in the lead battery. The proposed system can minimize the current consumption by digital pulse. Also the proposed system can generate the constant 10[KHz] frequency, transmit the signal with main control system in the power control system. And it supervises the state of lead battery using one chip micro processor. The proposed the switching mode conversion type pulse charger by the fly-back converter method can charge fast and stabilize lead battery with nominal value 12[V], 20[AH]. Also we propose the design procedure of the power control circuit for turn ratio of fly-back inductor and determining method of values such as the charging current, bulk current, partial current, over current value and fixed charging voltage. The experiment results for the voltage and current wave for partial, bulk, over and fixed charging period show the good charging effect and performance. And the PCB and internal coupling diagram of the switching mode conversion type pulse charger by fly-back converter method is presented.
