Synthesis, Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Bifunctional Sulfonamide-Amide Derivatives

  • A convenient synthesis of bifunctional sulfonamide-amide derivatives was reported. Amide coupling of 4-methyl benzoic acid 1 followed by reaction with chlorosulfonic acid produce ethyl-4-(3-(chlorosulfonyl)-4-methylbenzoyl)piperazine-1-carboxylate 4. The resulted compound on further treatment with various anilines produces the title sulfonamide-amide derivatives 5a-n. The configurations of these compounds were established by elemental analysis, IR, $^1H$ NMR, mass spectra, and by their preparation from the corresponding 4-methyl benzoic acid 1 and chlorosulfonic acid. All these new compounds demonstrate significant in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities against all bacterial and fungal strains.

Sulfonated Perfluorocyclobutyl Biphenylene Polymer Electrolyte Membranes for Fuel Cells (연료전지를 위한 술폰화된 Perfluorocyclobutyl Biphenylene 고분자 전해질막)

  • A PFCB-containing biphenylene ether polymer was synthesized and sulfonated using chlorosulfonic acid and then cast into membranes from their solutions for fuel cell applications. Sulfonation reactions were carried out by changing the molar ratio of chlorosulfonic acid and the PFCB-containing biphenylene ether polymer under fixed time and temperature. The resulting sulfonated polymers showed different sulfonation degree (SD), ion exchange capacity (IEC), and water uptake. With the increment of the content of chlorosulfonic acid, the SD, IEC, water uptake of the sulfonated polymer membranes increased. The ion conductivity of the sulfonated PFCB-containing biphenylene ether polymers was compared with that of Nafion 115.

  • Sulfated polysaccharides from plants or seaweed are well known for antioxidant, anticoagulant activity or other biological activities. The aim of the present study is to optimize the condition for the isolation of water soluble polysaccharides (WSP) and evaluate the biological activity. WSP was isolated from defatted microalgae B. braunii using chlorosulfonic acid or sulfuric acid. Among WSP isolated using sulfuric acid showed the lowest the content of total carbohydrates (g/L), whereas showed the highest antioxidant activity. Also the preliminary structural analysis of WSP was performed by FT-IR spectroscopy analysis.

Preparation and Characterization of Fluorenyl Polymer Electrolyte Membranes Containing PFCB Groups (PFCB Group을 포함한 Fluorene계 고분자 전해질막 제조 및 특성연구)

  • We report on the preparation and characterization of sulfonated polymer membranes containing perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) units and fluorene units. The polymers were prepared through three synthetic steps, that is, the synthesis of a trifluorovinylether-terminated monomer, its thermal polymerization, and post-sulfonation using chlorosulfonic acid. A series of sulfonated polymers with different ion exchange capacity (IEC) were prepared by changing the content of chlorosulfonic acid during the post-sulfonation reaction. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by FT-IR, $^{1}H-NMR,\;^{19}F-NMR$, and Mass spectroscopy. As the content of chlorosulfonic acid increased, the SD, IEC, water uptake, and ion conductivity of the sulfonated polymer membranes increased. The sulfonated polymer 4 showed higher values of ion conductivity than the Nafion-$115^{\circledR}$ in a wide range of temperatures ($25{\sim}80^{\circ}C$).

  • Polyamide containing carboxylic acid was sulfonated with chlorosulfonic acid in dichloroethane under various conditions. The impact of the sulfonating agent concentration, the reaction temperature, and the reaction time on the ion exchange capacity was investigated. The mechanical and thermal properties, the contact angle, and the change of poly-dispersity were calculated for studying change of their properties. The reactions were effective, when the temperature was below $10^{\circ}C$ and the concentration of chlorosulfonic acid was below 0.05 mol. The value of ion exchange capacity was increased with reaction time. Thermal and mechanical properties were nearly unchanged according to the degree of sulfonation, but the contact angle was increased with increasing the value of ion exchange capacity.

  • In this study, polyetherimide with pellet state was sulfonated with a chlorosulfonic acid. The volume ratio of carbon tetrachloride (CCI$_4$/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) was 5/1. Therefore, sulfonated polyetherimide of anionic charge and more hydrophilicity were produced. The optimum reaction conditions of sulfonation were that PES/CSA mole ratio was I/I, temperature were lO$^{\circ}$ and reaction time were 3hr. SPEls having ion capacity in the range of 0.2-1.2meq/mg were synthesized. Through FT-IR, sulfonic acid peak was shown at 1020cm$^{-1}$ and 1170cm$^{-1}$ Polymer dispersity index was broad and we confirmed that PEl was hydrophilzed in the measure of contact angle.

As the content of sulfonated fluorenyl units increased, the IEC, water uptake, and ion conductivity of the sulfonated random copolymer membranes increased. The sulfonated random copolymer S-1 and S-2 showed higher values of ion conductivity than the Nafion-115 in a wide range of temperatures ($25{\sim}80^{\circ}C$).

  • 기존에 membrane의 소재로 사용되어 왔던 Polyethersulfone은 막 제조 특성이 우수하고 여러 가지 환경에 대한 저항성이 뛰어나서 많이 이용되어 왔지만 소수성을 띠므로 농도분극과 fouling등 많은 문제점을 안고 있다. 이런 문제점을 극복하기 위하여 친수성의 도입, 물리적, 화학적 세척등 여러 가지 방법을 사용하고 있고 본 연구에서는 hydrophobic Polyethersulfone에 hydrophilic Sulfonate group(-SO$_3$H)을 도입하여 이와같은 문제를 극복하고자 했다. 본 연구에서 사용한 sulfonating agent로는 Chlorosulfonic acid (in CCl$_4$)를 사용하였다.

  • Polyetherimide(PEI)계의 고분자는 막 성능이 우수하고 내열성과 내유기용매성 등이 우수한 열가소성수지로서 film, sheet, tubular형으로 만들 수 있어 한외여과막이나 역삼투막, 기체분리막 등에 이용되고 있다. 한편 투과속도를 높이고, fouling을 줄이기 위한 친수성 향상은 막 소재의 화학적 개질에 있어서 주된 목표이다. sulfonation은 막 재질의 소수성을 감소시켜 water permeability를 향상시키는데 있어서 매우 유용한 방법으로 이온교환수지, 이온교환막, anion형 하전막의 제조에 이용되어 왔다. 본 실험에서는 polyetherimide계 고분자를 chlorosulfonic acid(CSA)를 이용하여 술폰화시킨 sulfonated polyetherimide(SPEI)를 제조하여 막 성능을 측정하였다.

  • Polypyrrole (PPy) was made by an emulsion polymerization using iron (III) chloride ($FeCl_3$) as an initiator and dodecyl benzene sulfuric acid (DBSA) as an emulsifier and dopant. Poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) was sulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid (CSA). The cathode was composed of $PPy^+DBS^-$ complex, conductor powder, and PPO or sulfonated poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (SPPO) as a binder or dopant. The charge-discharge performance of $PPy^+DBS^-/SPPO$ cathode was increased as the extent of about 50%, than $PPy^+DBS^-/PPO$. This is because SPPO played a role as a binder as well as a dopant. In addition, sulfonation brings out the increase of miscibility between PPy and SPPO, and the increase of contact area between cathode and electrolyte.
