  • Chroma key technique which composes images by separating an object from its background in specific color has restrictions on color and space. Especially, unlike general chroma key technique, image composition for stereo 3D display requires natural image composition method in 3D space. The thesis attempted to compose images in 3D space using depth keying method which uses high resolution depth information. High resolution depth map was obtained through camera calibration between the DSLR and Kinect sensor. 3D mesh model was created by the high resolution depth information and mapped with RGB color value. Object was converted into point cloud type in 3D space after separating it from its background according to depth information. The image in which 3D virtual background and object are composed obtained and played stereo 3D images using a virtual camera.

  • As an important part of virtual production, In-camera VFX is the process of shooting actual objects and virtual three-dimensional backgrounds in real-time through computer graphics technology and display technology, and obtaining the final film. In the In-camera VFX process, there are currently only two types of medium used to undertake background imaging, LED wall and chroma key screen. Among them, the In-camera VFX based on LED wall realizes background imaging through LED display technology. Although the imaging quality is guaranteed, the high cost of LED wall increases the cost of virtual production. The In-camera VFX based on chroma key screen, the background imaging is realized by real-time keying technology. Although the price is low, due to the limitation of real-time keying technology and lighting conditions, the usability of the final picture is not high. The short-throw projection technology can compress the projection distance to within 1 meter and get a relatively large picture, which solves the problem of traditional projection technology that must leaving a certain space between screen and the projector, and its price is relatively cheap compared to the LED wall. Therefore, in the In-camera VFX process, short-throw projection technology can be tried to project backgrounds. This paper will analyze the principle of short-throw projection technology and the existing In-camera VFX solutions, and through the comparison experiments, propose a low-cost solution that uses short-throw projectors to project virtual backgrounds and realize the In-camera VFX process.

  • Robot performances in public places are conducted for the purpose of promoting robot technology and inducing interest in events, exhibitions, and streets instead of dedicated stages. This paper extracts robot images in real time from a robot operation in front of a green chroma key cloth, and synthesizes them on various stage images. A simple and robust method for extracting a foreground robot from a chroma key background without a user's preset is proposed. After increasing the color difference between the background and the foreground, this method automatically removes the background based on the histogram of the difference information, thereby eliminating the need for a user's preset. The simulation shows 98.8% of foreground extraction rate and experimental results demonstrate that the robots can effectively be extracted from the background.

  • A virtual studio is a new video production environment using interactive computer graphics and imaging media technology. The traditional chroma-keying with two-dimensional background is replaced by an advanced keying method with a dynamic computer-generated, three-dimensional background. We have developed a virtual studio system that is practical to use in the real production environment. It has not only essential features that are common among various commercial virtual studio systems, but also unique feature that help the producer to construct virtual studio sets and scenarios efficiently such as span graph, robust backup controller, and 3 dimensional character generator supporting all languages. Our virtual studio system was used in live broadcasting and proved that the system was practical enough. In this paper, we will introduce the structure and the major features of our system, called VdreamSet, and application examples to broadcasting.

  • This study is on the precision of the optical scanner which is suitable for shape modeling and non-contact equipment, comparing with a razer scanner. The optical scanner not only has all merits that non-contact methods have but also improve a veil phenomenon which is a razer scanner's demerits. However, the optical scanner has not been used extensively because the measurements are not very precise and there are not the definite methods of measurement. Hence, this study is to find out how parameters such as camera's hight, angle, luminous intensity, distance to object, and so on have an influence on measuring using the optical scanner and to establish the methods of measuring precision.
