The Growing and Spawning of tile Catfish, Clarias batrachus in the Aquarium (수조내에서의 열대산 메기, Clarias batrachus의 사육과 산난부화)

  • Fry of a Siamic catfish Clarias batrachus was brought to Korea on August 14,1979 and exper-imentally reared for a whole life cycle in a small water recycling aquarium. After 29 days since start of feeding the fry were measured 5 cm in 1ength and 1.43 g in body weight and after 260 days they were measured 205.7 g average. Chorionic gonadotrophin (2 IU) was injected to a healthy female (224 g) and after 63 hours fertilized eggs were obtained in a small water recycling aquarium. About 1,300 fry were hatched out 20 hours after spawning at $30^{\circ}C$ constant water temperature. The fry began to feed on water fleas 53 hours after hatching. Newly Developed Microsatellite Markers of Mystus nemurus Tested for Cross-Species Amplification in Two Distantly Related Aquacultured Catfish Species

  • The work reported here is an attempt to explore the possibility of DNA microsatellite loci transfer (cross-species amplification) to other economically important aquacultured catfish species other than its source species. A total of 25 new microsatellite loci developed for riverine catfish, Mystus nemurus were successfully cross-amplified in two distantly related catfish species within the suborder Siluroidei. Five out of the 19 loci that successfully cross-amplified in Pangasius micronemus were polymorphic, while for Clarias batrachus, cross-amplification was successful using 17 polymorphic loci. The observed heterozygosities were high for all the three catfishes. The results indicated that microsatellite loci could be as polymorphic in non-source species as in the source species.

An Experiment on the Optimum Growth Temperature and Wintering Temperature of the Catfish, Clarias batrachus, in the Aquarium (열대산메기, Clarias batrachus의 수조내사육시의 적정사육 수온과 월동수온에 관한 연구)

  • From 1981 to 1982, a series of experiments on the optimum growth temperature, wintering temperature and lethal minimum temperature of the walking catfish Clarias batrachus, of about 12 to 40 g yearlings, were carried out using indoor recirculating aquariums at water temperature between $14^{\circ}C\;and\;34^{\circ}C$. The results are as follows. The optimum temperature of this species was turned out to be approximately $25^{\circ}C$ with highest feed intake and growth rates, and lowest conversion rate than at any other temperatures. The minimum temperature at which the fish can show growth turned out to be $18^{\circ}C$, At this temperature daily growth rate for 62 days was about $0.1\%$ and all fish survived. When this species was kept at $16^{\circ}C$ or lower, no fish survived more than one month and at lower than $14^{\circ}C$ all fish died out in 1 to 7 days. In accordance with these results it could be inferred that $18^{\circ}C$ is the minimum wintering temperature. Rearing this species at the minimum growth temperature for a long time, for wintering for instance, the sudden change of water temperature, especially decreasing to lower than $15^{\circ}C$ can be lethal for all fish.
