  • The importance of the evaluation and verification of small-size cogeneration system has been emphasized because there is no KS-code related to the small-size cogeneration system. The evaluation method of small-size engine cogeneration system was investigated by the reference of Japan evaluation code, JIS B-8122 and international standard organization, ISO-8528. Evaluation method was introduced such as start-test, rapid-load-up and rapid-load-down, etc. The evaluation method was applied to the 300kW small-size gas engine cogeneration system newly developed. The precise and strict evaluation and verification of the system will help the developing cogeneration system to optimum condition. It will also be a base document of KS-Code.

Economic Investigation of Small Scale Cogeneration System in a School Dormitory of Busan Region (부산지역 학교 기숙사에서의 소형열병합발전 시스템의 경제성 분석)

  • The cogeneration system can operate at efficiencies greater than those achieved when heat and power are produced in separate. The optimal system can be determined by selecting the auxiliary system combined with cogeneration system. In the present study, economic investigation has been conducted with the cogeneration electric heat pump(EHP) system and the cogeneration absorption chiller(AC) system to install in a school dormitory. To analyze life cycle cost(LCC), cost items such as initial investment costs, annual energy costs and maintenance costs of each system have been considered. The initial investment cost is referred to the basis of estimated costs, and annual energy costs such as the electric power and gas consumption are based on the data in a school dormitory. LCC is evaluated with the present worth method. Considering investigated results, the initial investment cost of the cogeneration EHP system is more profitable about 24% than that of the cogeneration AC system. The energy cost of the cogeneration EHP system is more profitable about 8% than the cogeneration AC system. The LCC shows that the cogeneration EHP system is the most effective system in the school dormitory.

Development of High Efficiency and Low Pollutant Cogeneration Hybrid System (고효율 저공해 열병합발전 하이브리드 시스템 개발)

  • The importance of the more efficient cogeneration system is emphasized. Also the more clean energy is needed at recent energy system. The cogeneration system using Lean burn engine is more preferred to the system using Rich burn engine because of the electrical efficiency. Although the cogeneration system using Lean burn engine is economically preferred, because of the NOx emission level, the system using Rich burn engine with 3-way catalyst can only be used in Korea. The NOx regulation level is 50ppm at oxygen level 13%. The cogeneration hybrid system is consist of Lean burn gas engine, afterburner, boiler, economizer, DeNOx catalyst, combustion catalyst, absorption chiller, cooling tower and grid connection system. The system was accurately evaluated and the result is following ; 90% total efficiency, below 10ppm NOx, 50ppm CO, 25ppm UHC. The cogeneration hybrid system can meet the NOx level and exhaust gas regulation. It can achieve the clean combustion gas and efficient cogeneration system.

  • The unpredicted worldwide oil price makes the energy efficiency technology be more importance than any other period. The small cogeneration system is one of the most representative technology among the energy efficiency technologies, and recently, the household cogeneration system has been the center object of attention because of the loss of power transmission and the reasonable energy consumption relative to the household (condensing) boiler producing heat only. A tiny, 1kW of electrical output, gas fueled internal combustion engine cogeneration system was investigated. The electrical efficiency and thermal efficiency of the system were measured. With the emission characteristics, the cogeneration system was analyzed. It was showed the gas engine cogeneration system produced the lowest NOx level compared any other cogeneration system due to the three-way catalyst.

  • The importance of the evaluation and verification of small-size cogeneration system has been emphasized because there is no KS-code related to the small-size cogeneration system. The evaluation method of small-size engine cogeneration system, regarding Japanese standard JIS B-8122 and international standard organization, ISO-8528, was applied to the system. The evaluation methods, start-test, rapid-load-up and rapid-load-down, etc. were executed at the system, and reasonable results were acquired. The electrical and thermal efficiencies were executed and analyzed at various load conditions. The NOx emission at various load condition was also measured. Finally, the gas engine cogeneration system was installed to a site for actual usage and it was continually operated during more than 6 months as the site condition.

  • This paper analyze the bus voltage sags in the power distribution system with a small scale cogeneration system when the superconducting fault current limiter was introduced. Among the solutions to decrease the short-circuit current considering the locations of the small scale cogeneration system, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been announced as one of the promising methods to reduce the fault current because the installation of the small scale cogeneration system which increases the short-circuit current. According to the application locations of the small scale cogeneration system in a power distribution system, it has caused the variations of voltage sag and duration which depends on the change of the short-circuit current, which can make the operation of the protective device deviate from its original set value when the fault occurs. To investigate the voltage sag when a SFCL was applied into a power distribution system where the small scale cogeneration system was introduced into various locations, the SFCL, small scale cogeneration system, and power system are modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC. In this paper, the effects on voltage sags are assessed when the SFCL is installed in power distribution system with various locations of the small scale cogeneration system.

The cogeneration hybrid system using Lean burn engine is up to be optimized because of the large amount of the extra-fuel at the after-burner system. The after-burner system at different concept was applied. The reduction time for the activation temperature of the DeNOx catalyst was achieved by making a hole between the combustor and boiler. Because of the lowered fuel consumption, the lowered temperature level was optimized by blocking the hole of the boiler The optimized cogeneration hybrid system consumes $76Nm^3/h$ LNG to produce 150kW electricity compared to before optimization $103Nm^3/h$ LNG. The system was accurately evaluated and the result is following ; 90% total efficiency, below 10 ppm NOx, 50ppm CO, 25ppm HC. The cogeneration hybrid system can meet the current NOx level and exhaust gas regulation. It can achieve the clean combustion gas and efficient cogeneration system.

The small cogeneration system is one of the most representative technology among the energy efficiency technologies, and the Stirling engine cogeneration system has been concerned and investigated due to the preferable characteristics - low toxic emission, low noise and vibration level, and the various form of fuel. A tiny, 1kW of electrical output, gas fueled Stirling engine cogeneration system was investigated. The electrical efficiency and thermal efficiency of the system were measured. The experiment was executed at an independent Stirling engine mode, independent secondary burner mode, and the combined mode. Part load characteristics of the Stirling engine cogeneration system were investigated also. With the efficiency characteristics, the $O_2$ and NOx emission characteristics were measured.

  • This paper analyzed that the coordination of recloser-fuse when a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is installed to a power distribution system linked small scale cogeneration system. As a rule, the recloser to properly protect against both permanent and temporary fault is installed to upstream of fuse. Therefore, in a power distribution system linked small scale cogeneration system, the fault current is increased by adding fault current of small scale Cogeneration system when a permanent fault occurs, and the fuse could melt during the first fast operation of the recloser because of more sufficient heat from the increased current. However, when SFCLs are applied into a power distribution system linked small scale cogeneration system, the coordination of recloser-fuse could be accomplished due to decreased fault current as the effect of the impedance value of the SFCL. Therefore, to solve these problems, we analysed the operation of recloser-fuse coordination in a power distribution system linked small scale cogeneration system with SFCL using PSCAD/EMTDC.

A Study on the Economic Evaluation with Super-Micro Fuel Cell Home Cogeneration System by Varying the Floor Area of House (주택면적의 변화에 따른 가정용 초소형 연료전지 코제너레이션 시스템의 경제성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The fuel cell system is environment-friendly and energy efficient system. Especially, the fuel cell cogeneration systems providing heat and electricity to buildings have been developed and applied to a lot of sites in the world to cope with the global warming and $CO_2$ emission problem. This paper presents the result of study on the economic evaluation with super-micro fuel cell (SMFC) cogeneration system by varying the floor area ($132m^2{\sim}331m^2$) of the house, whose system capacity ranges from 0.10 kWe to 0.50 kWe. The electricity demand, heat demand, saved energy cost, and the simple pay-back period have been simulated for the various capacities of fuel cell cogeneration system. As a result, this study suggests the fuel cell system’s capacity decision strategy for a given house area. Contrary to conventional design assumptions, the smaller capacity fuel cell cogeneration system is appropriate for the house of large floor area to defense the progressive electricity tax, and the larger capacity fuel cell cogeneration system is appropriate for the house of small floor area to sell the electricity.
