Objective : This study was performed to compare needle acupuncture combined herbal acupuncture therapy with only needle acupuncture therapy in VAS and pain threshold. Methods : We used pressure algometer to evaluate the change of pain threshold before and after treatment. The numberical value of pressure algometer is obtained twice and averaged by identical acupuncturist. Visual analogue scale(VAS) was used to estimate the efficacy of needle acupuncture combined herbal acupuncture therapy. Result : The following results were obtained; 1. The significant difference in VAS was showed before and after treatment in only needle acupuncture therapy. 2. The significant difference in pain threshold and VAS was showed before and after treatment in needle acupuncture combined herbal acupuncture therapy. 3. In the pain threshold, the significant difference between only needle acupuncture and needle acupuncture combined herbal acupuncture therapy was not showed. 4. Needle acupuncture combined herbal acupuncture therapy showed the more effective change of VAS than only needle acupuncture therapy. Conclusions : In the pain control, needle acupuncture combined herbal acupuncture therapy is more effective than only needle acupuncture therapy.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate clinical trends of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on combined treatment of acupuncture and relaxation therapy. Methods: Clinical trials based on acupuncture and relaxation therapy searched and were selected from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). In this study we selected clinical research articles using acupuncture and relaxation therapy as intervention. Studies were assessed by Risk of Bias (RoB) tool, and Jadad scale. Results: Eleven randomized controlled trials on combined treatment of acupuncture and relaxation therapy were selected, and these studies were published in China. Most studies have targeted psychiatric disorders such as insomnia and anxiety. Manual Acupuncture (MA) was the most used acupuncture treatment, and in five studies two or more relaxation therapies were used in parallel. Although the treatment result using acupuncture and relaxation therapy was superior, heterogeneity of the control group was high and it was difficult to estimate additional effects of relaxation therapy. Conclusions: Qualitative analysis revealed that the combination of acupuncture and relaxation was more effective than control in most studies. However, quality of most studies was low. Therefore, higher quality clinical research on combined treatment of acupuncture and relaxation therapy is required.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the therapeutic effect of acupuncture treatment of acute ankle sprain combined with positional release therapy. Methods: A prospective randomized single blind study between positional release group and knee flexed supine position group was conducted. Patients with ankle sprain within 48 hours were evaluated by Ankle injury grade chart(AIGC). In group A, positional release therapy was combined with acupuncture, whereas in group B, acupuncture was conducted in knee flexed supine position. The treatment was planned for a duration of 1 week, 3times a week. In AIGC scores, VAS, weight bearing time and weight bearing time in blind were followed up and compared. Results and Conclusion: The VAS score decreased in both group. Weight bearing time increased in group B, weight bearing time in blind increased in group A. Comparing the therapeutic effect of each group, group A had significant effectiveness in weight bearing time in blind. So we may conclude that Acupuncture treatment combined with positional release therapy is effective and recommandable at early stage of ankle sprain.

The purpose of this study is to report the effect of combined acupuncture treatment on acute ankle sprain patients. The subjects included in this study were 15 acute ankle sprain patients who visited Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine from Oct. 15th, 2012 to Feb. 8th, 2013. We treated 15 patients with combined acupuncture treatment. The treatment consisted of Hwangrunhaedok-tang (Huanglianjiedutang) pharmacupuncture, electroacupuncture (applied to GB39, ST36 on the affected side), acupuncture (applied to TE17, SI6 on the unaffected side with Dong-Qi therapy). To assess the effect of treatment, the numeric rating scale (NRS) was applied before and after treatment. After first combined acupuncture treatment, the NRS scores significantly decreased from $8.33{\pm}0.94$ to $2.26{\pm}0.44$ (p<0.01). We suggested that Combined acupuncture treatment are effective and useful on acute ankle sprain. And, further studies will be needed.

Objectives This study aims to evaluate the effect of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation treatment for cerebral palsy in children. Methods 7 electro-database (PubMed, CENTRAL, CNKI, DBpia, KISS, OASIS, KJTK) were searched for using the keywords "cerebral palsy AND acupuncture" which study is designed in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Results 10 out of 303 studies were included in analysis after screened. Acupuncture combined with rehabilitation treatment had a significant effect on motor function. Only 1 study reported minor adverse effects. Conclusions All of the studies have shown acupuncture combined with conventional rehabilitation treatment was effective in cerebral palsy. Additional well-designed studies are needed to justify the effectiveness of acupuncture in cerebral palsy.

A 57-year-old female diagnosed with L5-S1 lumbar intervertebral disc herniation, suffering from severe pain despite taking tapentadol received combined Korean medicine treatment, including acupotomy, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal therapies for 53 days. To assess pain, Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and lumbar range of motion (ROM) were checked daily from the day of admission. Moreover, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) were used to evaluate function and quality of life. After combined Korean medicine treatment, reabsorptioin of intervertebral disc was confirmed by radiological examination; pain reduced from NRS 5~7 to NRS 1~2; lumbar ROM in extention increased from 20° to 30°; and function and quality of life improved. The results suggest the possibility that a combined Korean medical treatment, including acupotomy, can be used as an alternative to opioids for pain management of lumbar vertebral disc herniation.

Background and Objectives : This case report aims to determine the effect of acupuncture and herbal medicine as a treatment for tinnitus. Subjects and Methods : 11 patients with tinnitus were treated by acupuncture combined with herbal medicine. Patients were evaluated with verbal numerical rating scale scores for loudness, annoyance, and awareness of tinnitus before and after treatment. Results : 9 patients reported reduction of loudness, annoyance, and awareness of tinnitus after treatment. Among them, complete suppression of the tinnitus was obtained in 1 case. 2 patients reported no improvement. Conclusions : This case study presents clinical possibility of acupuncture and herbal medicine for the treatment of tinnitus.

This study aimed to report the effect of moving cupping therapy (MCT) on peripheral facial palsy (PFP). Four patients with PFP treated with MCT combined with integrative Korean medicine treatment (KMT). Patients were hospitalized for < 17 days. House-Brackmann Grading System (HBGS), Yanagihara grading score (Y-score), and Sunnybrook Facial Grading System (SBGS) were used to assess the changes during treatment periods, and facial photos were taken at admission, interim, and discharge. Facial paralysis symptoms and HBGS grades improved in all patients (Patient 1: HBGS of IV to II; Patient 2: HBGS of V to III; Patient 3: HBGS of IV to II; Patient 4: HBGS of IV to II) following an average of 14.5 days of treatment. The mean (± standard deviation) Y-scores and SBGS scores also increased (Δ[Y-score]: 13.75 ± 3.50 and Δ[SBGS]: 40.00 ± 13.11) from baseline to end of treatment. These findings suggest the clinical effectiveness of MCT combined with integrative KMT in treating patients with PFP.

Objectives : We investigated the efficacy and safety of miniscalpel acupuncture (MA) treatment combined with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for chronic neck pain (CNP) in an assessor-blinded randomized controlled pilot trial to establish a basis for larger-scale randomized controlled studies on this subject. Methods : Participants (n=36) were recruited and randomly allocated to the MA group, NSAIDs and combined treatment group. The MA group received MA three times over three weeks. The NSAIDs group was administered orally with zaltoprofen 80mg t.i.d. over three weeks. The combined treatment group received MA and zaltoprofen in the same manner as MA and NSAIDs groups. The primary outcome was pain as assessed by a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the secondary outcomes were assessed using the Neck Disability index (NDI), EuroQol 5-dimension questionnaire (EQ-5D), and Patients' Global Impression of Change scale (PGIC). Assessments were made at week 0 (baseline), 1, 2, 3 (primary end point) during treatment and at week 7 (4 weeks after the end of treatment). Results : 35 participants completed the study. No serious adverse event occurred and blood test results were within normal limits. The improvement of VAS and NDI was significantly greater in combined and MA group than that in NSAIDs group (p<0.017). The combined group showed better outcomes in EQ-5D at visit 2 and 5, in PGIC at visit 4 than the NSAIDs group (p<0.017). No significant differences were found between combined and MA group. Conclusions : Our results suggest that both combined and MA group can be more effective in improving pain control than NSAIDs group. A large-scale clinical study is warranted to further clarify these findings.
