  • This study is to improve the efficiency of BTL (Build Transfer Lease) project operation by comparing the infiltration rate based on the data of 5 years of infiltration of the separate sewer system and combined sewer system. In the survey site, the separate sewer system area consists of eight flowmeters in seven treatment basins, and the combined sewer system area consists of eight flowmeters in five treatment basins. The infillration rate was analyzed by night-time domestic flow evaluation method, and the average infiltration rates of the separate sewer system and combined sewer system were 13% and 16%, respectively. Combined sewer system was about 1.3 times higher than the separate sewer system. The average BOD of separate sewer system was 233 mg/L, which was about 2.4 times higher than the combined sewer system was 107 mg/L. In the comparison of the average pipe diameter-length infiltration of separate sewer system and combined sewer system, the separate sewer system and the combined sewer system were about 0.150 ㎥/d/mm/km and about 0.109 ㎥/d/mm/km, respectively. The floating population in mixed residential and commercial areas has been identified as the cause. Therefore, we propose a method to calculate the infiltration rate in consideration of the margin ratio in the area where the night active population is concentrated.

  • In this study, the characteristics of nonpoint source pollutant loads from separate sewer overflow (SSO) and combined sewer overflow (CSO) were evaluated during 2016 in Namyangju city, Korea. Five rainfall events were monitored during 2016 with ranging from 14.5 mm to 121.5 mm. The runoff ratio of CSO was higher than that of SSO because only design volume of maximum sanitary sewer ($1Q_h$) was transported and treated and $2Q_h$ was overflowed to waterbody during rainy day although combined sewer system was designed to transport $3Q_h$ to treatment system. The event mean concentrations (EMCs) and pollutant loads from CSO were higher than those from SSO. BOD and COD of CSO, and TOC and TN of SSO represented distinct first flush phenomena. The inadequate management in combined sewer system from which the untreated $2Q_h$ from CSO was overflowed to waterbody during rainy day could influence on high pollutant loads and first flushing. Treating $2Q_h$ from CSO, source control such as low impact development, and treating outflow from SSO were strongly recommended to control non-point source pollution in urban area.

  • Discharged pollution load is varied as rainfall changes in the area with combined sewer system. Changes in discharged pollution load are directly related with those of sewer transfer flow. Therefore, it is important to identify the pattern of sewer transfer flow for the analysis of changes in discharged pollution load. This study reviewed the type of distribution of sewer transfer flow for 17 sewage treatment plants and developed simple formular to estimate sewer transfer flow as rainfall changes. 11 facilities showed to have some relation with rainfall in the change of sewer transfer flow but 6 facilities to have no relation. Relationships between rainfall amount and sewer transfer flow showed that 6 facilities out of 11 had relatively strong relationships above R2=0.5, which were considered to be affected directly by rainfall changes. The formular which explain the relationship between rainfall and sewer transfer flow can be applied in the analysis of rainfall effects on discharged pollution load, therefore, the more appropriate evaluation will be done.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate CSOs(combined sewer overflows) control in the combined sewer with/without separation wall. There is the high correlation between sewage velocity and suspended solid(SS) loading in the sewer without it. The SS/BOD ratio was about 3 times in the area with it, while it was about 5 times in the area without it. Therefore, the accumulated deposit within the sewer has influenced high SS loading in the sewer without it. This study showed that the separation wall installed acquired an acceptable efficiency in controlling the accumulated deposit in the combined sewer. According to this study, the BOD control effect was about 38 % in the sewer with the separation wall, whereas it showed about 24 % in the sewer without it. In this case, it was anticipated that the high pollutant control effect would be expected if the separation wall was installed in the combined sewer.

  • Most of domestic city is served combined sewer system among various sewer system like as separate sanitary, combined sewer system and storm sewers. During the wet weather, sewer and rainfall have been overflowed because it is over capacity of the combined sewer system; that is called combined sewer overflows(CSOs) This research was carried out to investigate runoff characteristics of combined sewer and to evaluate the effective CSOs volume in Hong-Chun gun. During wet weather, SS load of first rainfall at H-1, H-2, and H-3 were 600kg/event, 370kg/event, and 289kg/event, respectively. 55 load of second rainfall were 216kg/event, 113kg/event, and 37.2kg/event. When the first rainfall, event mean concentrations(EMCs) at each site were 702mg/L, 816mgjL and 861.5mg/L. The second rainfall's event mean concentrations(EMCs) were 99.9gm/L, 161.9mg/L, 103.6mg/L. Rrst flush coefficient b at each site were 0.237,0.166, and 0.151. When the first rainfall, the flow containing 80% of pollutant mass of CSOs at each site were 0.55, 0.23, 0.48 in first rainfall, respectively. The case of second rainfall were 0.79, 0.83, 0.81. Most of all, characteristics of rainfall like as analysis of first-flush, CSOs volume, pollutant loadings is investigated to decide intercepted volume for control of CSOs.

  • Generally CSOs (Combined Sewer Overflows) are regarded as one of the most serious nonpoint pollution source in the urban watershed, Particularly, the water quality of the Oncheon stream is seriously affected by CSOs because the capacity of interception sewer system connected to the Suyoung wastewater treatment plant is too small to intercept most storm water discharges. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of nonpoint source on an urban stream with regards to combined sewer system and separate sewer system using GIS (Geographic Information System) and SWMM (Storm Water Management Model), and to provide an insight for the management of urban stream water quality. In order to consider the effect of CSOs on the receiving water quality, the flow divider element in SWMM was applied. The model calibration and verification were performed by the measured data of quantity and quality on the Oncheon stream. The quantity data acquired from the Suyoung wastewater treatment plant were also used for this procedure. In case of separate sewer system, the modeling results showed the increased tendency in streamflow compared with the combined system in dry weather, In addition, the water quality is remarkably improved in rainfall events at the separate condition. The results imply that the construction of separate sewer system should be taken into first consideration to restore the quality and quantity of water in urban streams.

  • The effect of Combined Sewer Overflow on the river system was investigated throughout three preliminary field tests and three main ones. As a result of the study, Combined Sewer Overflow did not affect water qualities on the main stream since the concentration of the main stream did not significantly changed during rainfall events although the water quality of tributaries has rapidly deteriorated due to the influence of the Combined Sewer Overflow during rainfall events. The main cause of the result is that the flow rate of the tributaries is considerably lower than that of the main stream, so that the tributaries with deteriorated water quality during rainfall events did not significantly affect the quality of the actual main stream. Therefore, the water quality of the Kumho River is more affected by the wastewater treatment facilities that discharges water continuously to the main stream than pollutants from non-point pollution sources during rainfall events. As a result, managements for discharges from wastewater treatment facilities should be strengthened in order to improve the water quality of the river.

  • A combined sewer system can quickly drain both storm water and sewage, improve the living environment and resolve flood measures. A combined sewer system is much superior to separate sewer system in reduction of the non-point source pollutant load. However, during rainfall. it is impossible in time, space and economic terms to cope with the entire volume of storm water. A sewage system that exceeds the capacity of the sewer facilities drain into the river mixed with storm-water. In addition, high concentration of CSOs by first-flush increase pollution load and reduce treatment efficiency in sewage treatment plant. The aim of this study was to develope a processing unit for the removal of high CSOs concentrations in relation to water quality during rainfall events in a combined sewer. The most suitable operational design for processing facilities under various conditions was also determined. With a designed discharge of 19.89 m/min, the removal efficiency was good, without excessive overflow, but it was less effective in relation to underflow, and decreased with decreasing particle size and specific gravity. It was necessary to lessen radius of vortex separator for increasing inlet velocity in optimum range for efficient performance, and removal efficiency was considered to high because of rotation increases through enlargement of comparing height of vortex separator in diameter. By distribution of influent particle size, the actual turbulent flow and experimental results was a little different from the theoretical removal efficiency due to turbulent effect in device.

  • Some data into combined and sanitary sewer system were collected in order to find out the characteristics of discharge from first flush rainfall inflow. The inflow ratios of combined and sanitary sewer system were 0.46 and 0.27 during rains from various survey data. The average inflow ratio 0.31 was appropriate for general application because many watersheds were not classified clearly as combined or sanitary sewage treatment areas. The percentage of first flush loads in the whole BOD load was about 10%. This result was thought some meaningful, comparing with similarity of first flush pollution load contribution previous surveyed by KECO (2004).

  • Urban sanitary sewer systems can aid in preventing inundation, and can improve civil health by effectively disposing stormwater and wastewater. However, since sewage odor can cause adverse effects, numerous technical and administrative studies have been conducted for reducing such odor. European countries and the United States of America (USA) built modern sewer systems in the late 19th century, and have since been endeavoring to eliminate sewage odors. Several cities of the USA, such as Los Angeles (LA) that has a separate sewer system and San Francisco (SF) that has a combined sewer system, have produced and distributed odor control master plan manuals. Features common in the odor reduction plans of both these cities are that the odor reduction programs are operated in all the respective local regions and are supported by administrative systems. The primary aspectual difference between the two said programs is that the city of LA employs a sewage air purification system, whereas the city of SF controls the emission of major odor causing compounds. Compared to the existing sewer odor reduction systems of these two cities, South Korea is still in the initial phase of development. Through technical studies and policy implementations for sewer odor reduction, a foundation can be laid for improving the civil health quality.
