Since the diffusion rate of sewage treatment plant is about 30% of the country. It is not enough to cope with entire sewage treatment of the community. Therefore, the septic tank is introduced which is connected with water flush toilet only. It is estimated that the large portion of water pollution has occured due to untreated sewage such as pollutants of kitchen, laundry and bathtub water, etc., which are not go through the existing septic tank. However, the construction of community plant which is could treat most of household run sewage should have flexibility in type, treatment method, effectiveness and economy which are adoption of the community. Without the treatment of combined household run sewage, the improvement of water pollution will be hardly expected.
This study conducted a result analysis on operation of 26 Rural Community Sewage Treatment Plant (RCSTP) newly constructed in Yeong-yang, Bong-hwa and An-dong areas which are located at the upper region of An-dong Dam and Im-ha Dam. Based on operation result, an analysis on characteristics of sewage in each area and the treatment efficiency of the installed treatment process was conducted. The result of analysis on characteristics of sewage has shown the difference in concentration of the sewage according to area characteristics. Sewage in areas with frequent occurrence of agricultural water and livestock wastewater had high concentration. It is important to select the most suitable treatment process when selecting a treatment process for RCSTP according to properties of sewage in each area. As a result of operation, the disposal efficiency for organic matter and suspended solids was stable with less fluctuation, but the disposal efficiency for nitrogen and phosphorus showed high fluctuation. This signifies that it is necessary to pay attention to operation condition management of nitrogen and phosphorus when operating RCSTP.
Traditional wastewater research mainly focuses on 1) estimating the amount of waste entering sewage treatment facilities, 2) evaluating the treatment efficiency of sewage facilities, 3) investigating the role of sewage treatment effluent as a point source, and 4) designing and managing sewage treatment facilities. However, since wastewater contains a variety of chemical and biological substances due to the discharge of human excreta and material used for daily living into it, the collective constituents of wastewater are likely a reflection of a community's status. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), an emerging and promising field of study that involves the analysis of substances in wastewater, can be applied to monitor the state of a defined community. WBE provides opportunities for exploiting indicators in wastewater to fulfill various objectives. The data analyzed under WBE are those pertaining to selected natural and anthropogenic substances in wastewater that are a result of the discharge of metabolic excreta, illicit or legal drugs, and infectious pathogens into the wastewater. This paper reviews recent progress in WBE and addresses current challenges in the field. It primarily discusses several representative applications including the investigation of drug consumption across different communities and the management of community disease and health. Finally, it summarizes established indicators for WBE.
Individual sewage treatment system is classified into a sewage treatment system which treats all the domestic sewage and a water-purifier tank which treats only effluent flushing from the toilet. The number of registered manufacturers has increased rapidly since 2001. As a result, price competition has increased among the manufacturers and has caused the problems such as the inappropriate production of individual sewage treatment system, the unreasonable permit for building completion and the shortage of the professional technology of the community's public officials in charge. This study collected the problem cases that are related with existing individual sewage treatment system and operation. Efficient improvement plan for the stable supply, installation, maintenance of individual sewage treatment system were suggested.
In order to examine the tailorability of advanced sewage treatment of a separated sewer pipe, we observed the quality of leaked water in a reactor. A2C affiliation and MBR affiliation decreased by over 78% in cases of BOD, COD, and SS. SBR affiliation decreased by 79.1% in a case of T-N. Overall, the efficiency of T-N on the above affiliations was low. SS had the high efficiency in MBR affiliation. In the end, examination of water quality improvement showed that the quality was improved from 20% to 90%; hence, it is expected that this treatment can protect the water resources of the Hongcheon River and makes it easier to use the water of the river.

This paper calculated advanced sewage treatment efficiency and reduction pollution loads to estimation contribution ratio of for community sewerage in Hongcheon-gun County. The A2/O and SBR methods showed overall high treatment efficiency of 95% and 94% respectively, and SS was 80%. On the other hand, T-N and T-P showed relatively low processing efficiency of 56% and 60% respectively, but it was observed that SS showed high 96% in the MBR method. Next, by the result of yearly water change analysis on water quality of Hongcheon River which is the discharge river of community sewerage, it was observed that water quality was greatly deteriorated by COD, T-N and T-P. However, installation and operation of community sewerage showed high pollution load reduction in general water quality item by more than 80%, and in T-N and T-P by 58% and 68% respectively. It is expected that community sewerage will greatly contribute in water quality improvement of Hongcheon River.
The effects of three different irrigating water qualities(clean water, life sewage and animal sewage) on the pattern of arthropod communities in the rice fields were investigated at Banwol, Kyonggi-do, mid-western part of Korea from 1994 to 1996. The total density of arthropod was highest in the rice field which was irrigated with clean water(clean water field), and the arthropod community was mainly composed of aphids and collembolans. Each functional group was found in the order of 'pests>non-pests>natural enemies' in its density. The dominant taxa in the pest group were aphids, planthoppers(Delphacidae), leafhoppers(Cicadelidae) and rice water weevil(L. oryzophilus). In the non-pest group collembolans, non-biting midges and dipterans were main arthropods, and in the natural enemy group Araneae was the dominant taxon. In the early growth stage of rice plant the dominant functional group was pests, and in the mid growth stage both the pest and the natural enemy group became dominant. But in the late growth stage none of the functional group was dominant over the other functional groups. The densities of spiders were much more higher in the clean water field than in the other fields. And through all the growth stages of rice plants the density of spiders in clean water field kept increase in contrast to the others. The species composition of spiders in the life sewage field was similar to that in the animal sewage field, but in the clean water field it was different from the other two fields.
Sediment bacterial communities are critical to the biogeochemical cycle in river ecosystems, but our understanding of the relationship between sediment bacterial communities and their specific input streams in rivers remains insufficient. In this study, we analyzed the sediment bacterial community structure in a local river receiving discharge of urban domestic sewage by applying Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the bacterial communities of sediments samples of different pollution types had similar dominant phyla, mainly Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi and Firmicutes, but their relative abundances were different. Moreover, there were great differences at the genus level. For example, the genus Bacillus showed statistically significant differences in the hotel site. The clustering of bacterial communities at various sites and the dominant families (i.e., Nocardioidaceae, and Sphingomonadaceae) observed in the residential quarter differed from other sites. This result suggested that environmentally induced species sorting greatly influenced the sediment bacterial community composition. The bacterial co-occurrence patterns showed that the river bacteria had a nonrandom modular structure. Microbial taxonomy from the same module had strong ecological links (such as the nitrogenium cycle and degradation of organic pollutants). Additionally, PICRUSt metabolic inference analysis showed the most important function of river bacterial communities under the influence of different types of domestic sewage was metabolism (e.g., genes related to xenobiotic degradation predominated in residential quarter samples). In general, our results emphasize that the adaptive changes and interactions in the bacterial community structure of river sediment represent responses to different exogenous pollution sources.

Alternative sources of energy take a higher interest in order to reduce the greenhouse gas under the Climate Change Convention, fossil fuel consumption, and lower social anxiety about nuclear power such as crisis involving the Fukushima plant, problem of obsolete equipment. The energy consumption of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in South Korea is 3,082,000toe by 2011, reliance on electrical energy(35%) and oil(57.2%) is very high with 92.2%. In this study, we examined reserves and available capacity of temperature difference energy for thermal discharge from plant, treated sewage, river water, dam, and agricultural reservoir in rural community. Reserves of unutilized energy are 455,735Tcal/yr in rural community, these accounts for 78% of total reserves 582,385Tcal/y. Thermal discharge from plant has the most reserves of unutilized energy in rural community, it is estimated that it has the reserves of 277,410Tcal/y. Available capacity of unutilized energy in rural community is total 134,147Tcal/y, thermal discharge from plant available for heating is the most 128,035Tcal/y, and it shows in the order of treated sewage 4,318Tcal/y, river water 1,653Tcal/y, and reservoir 141Tcal/y. Elevating temperature area of green house by 2012 is 21,208ha. The amount of energy required for heating the greenhouse a year is dbout 11,365Tcal/y with 8.5% of the total available capacity of unutilized energy.

The analysis and quantification of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) is crucial, as they initiate the biological removal of ammonia-nitrogen from sewage. Previous methods for analyzing the microbial community structure, which involve the plating of samples or culture media over agar plates, have been inadequate because many microorganisms found in a sewage plant are unculturable. In this study, to exclusively detect AOB, the analysis was carried out via denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis using a primer specific to the amoA gene, which is one of the functional genes known as ammonia monooxygenase. An AOB consortium (S1 sample) that could oxidize an unprecedented 100% of ammonia in 24 h was obtained from sewage sludge. In addition, real-time PCR was used to quantify the AOB. Results of the microbial community analysis in terms of carbon utilization ability of samples showed that the aeration tank water sample (S2), influent water sample (S3), and effluent water sample (S4) used all the 31 substrates considered, whereas the AOB consortium (S1) used only Tween 80, D-galacturonic acid, itaconic acid, D-malic acid, and $_L$-serine after 192 h. The largest concentration of AOB was detected in S1 ($7.6{\times}10^6copies/{\mu}l$), followed by S2 ($3.2{\times}10^6copies/{\mu}l$), S4 ($2.8{\times}10^6copies/{\mu}l$), and S3 ($2.4{\times}10^6copies/{\mu}l$).
