  • Single sound absorbers such as porous materials, panels, and Helmholts resonators have limited performance with some extents of frequency region. For example, porous materials do not attenuate low frequency sounds, while panels do not absorb high frequency sounds. Composite absorption structure with coverings, porous materials, and air gaps are an alternative for wide band sound absorption. Slits, panels, perforated panels are those materials for coverings, glass wool, mineral wool, polyester, and polyurethane are frequently used porous materials. Air gap between the porous material and background surface is one of major factors which governs the absorption characteristics of composite absorption structures, especially in the low frequency area. Calculations and measurements show that the absorption coefficients of composite absorption structure, in mid and low frequency bands, are getting higher with increased air gaps. Perforated panels rather than slits and panels are good coverings with higher number as far as absorption coefficient is concerned. Perforated panels with porous materials and 37 cm of air gaps in background have high absorption coefficients for all frequency bands, above 0.7 to 1.0. All measurements are performed in reverberation chamber, Mokpo National University, according to ISO 354 and ISO 3382.

  • One of the major problems in glass fiber reinforced epoxy (GFRE) composite pipes is the durability under water absorption. This condition is generally recognized to cause degradations in strength and mechanical properties. Therefore, there is a need for an intelligent system for detecting the absorption rate and computing the mass of water absorption (M%) as a function of absorption time (t). The present work represents a new non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technique for detecting the water absorption rate by evaluating the dielectric properties of glass fiber and epoxy resin composite pipes subjected to internal hydrostatic pressure at room temperature. The variation in the dielectric signatures is employed to design an electrical capacitance sensor (ECS) with high sensitivity to detect such defects. ECS consists of twelve electrodes mounted on the outer surface of the pipe. Radius-electrode ratio is defined as the ratio of inner and outer radius of pipe. A finite element (FE) simulation model is developed to measure the capacitance values and node potential distribution of ECS electrodes on the basis of water absorption rate in the pipe material as a function of absorption time. The arrangements for positioning12-electrode sensor parameters such as capacitance, capacitance change and change rate of capacitance are analyzed by ANSYS and MATLAB to plot the mass of water absorption curve against absorption time (t). An analytical model based on a Fickian diffusion model is conducted to predict the saturation level of water absorption ($M_S$) from the obtained mass of water absorption curve. The FE results are in excellent agreement with the analytical results and experimental results available in the literature, thus, validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed expert system.

  • This study investigated the effect of water absorption on the tensile properties of carbon-glass/epoxy hybrid composites at room temperature and $-30^{\circ}C$. To investigate the effect of the position of glass fabric in the hybrid composite on the tensile properties, the stacking pattern of the fiber fabrics for reinforcing was created in three different ways: (a) glass fabrics sandwiched between carbon fabrics, (b) carbon fabrics sandwiched between glass fabrics and (c) alternative layers of carbon and glass fabrics. They were manufactured by a vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. The results showed that there was surprisingly little difference in tensile strength at the two different temperatures with dry and wet conditions. However, the water absorption into the hybrid system affected the tensile properties of the hybrid composites at RT and $-30^{\circ}C$. When the glass fabrics were at the outermost layers, the hybrid composite had the lowest tensile properties. This is attributed to the fact that the composite had a relatively high water absorption rate.

  • Hygrothermal aging at the elevated temperature induces the long-term degradation of the epoxy resin. We investigated the effects of hydrothermal stress on the dielectric breakdown phenomena of epoxy composite filled with natural zeolite. The cured specimens absorbed the moisture in the autoclave at $120^{\circ}C$. $T_g$ of the deteriorated composite by moisture absorption decreased. The dielectric breakdown strength decreased with the moisture absorption cycle. It was concluded that the thermal stress and the high water-vapour-pressure deteriorated the natural zeolite filled epoxy resin system, consequently and the tree growth rate increased.

  • Hybrid composite strut tower was designed to prevent permanent deformation of upper mount by the impact from the uneven road. When exceeding energy absorption capacity of tire and suspension systems, residual impact is delivered to upper mount. Especially, in case of using high-rigidity suspension system for high driving performance, the conventional strut tower can be easily deformed due to reduction of energy absorption capacity of suspension systems. In this study, optimal design of hybrid composite strut tower which made of back-up metal and carbon fiber reinforced composite was suggested by using finite element analysis, and low velocity impact test was performed to investigate their dynamic characteristics. Also, 3D measuring and ultra c-scanning methods were carried out to diagnose damages in the strut towers.

  • In comparison to metal alloys, braided composite features a high impact resistance and crash energy absorption potential, and also it still remained competitive stiffness and strength properties. Braiding angle is one of the most important parameters which affect the mechanical behaviors of braided composite. This paper presents transverse low velocity impact failure behavior analysis on the carbon 3D triaxial braided composite tube with the braiding angle of $20^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$ and $80^{\circ}$. The flexural behaviour of 3D triaxial braided composite tube under bending loads was studied by conducting quasistatic three point bending test. Also, the low velocity impact responses of the braided composite tubes were also tested to obtain load-displacement curves and energy absorption. Consequently, the increase of the braided angle, the peak load also increases owing to the bigger bending stiffness.

  • Application of the steel ring as a type of seismic fuse has been one of the efforts made by researchers in recent years aiming to enhance the ductility of the bracing systems which in turn, possesses various advantages and disadvantages. Accordingly, to alleviate these disadvantages, an innovative bracing system with a diamond scheme equipped with a steel ring is introduced in this paper. In this system, the braces and yielding circular damper act in parallel whose main functionality is to increase ductility, energy absorption and mitigate drawbacks of the existing bracing systems, in which the braces and yielding circular damper act in parallel. To conduct the experimental tests, specimens with three types of rigid, semi-rigid and pinned connections were built and subjected to cyclic loading so that their performance could be analyzed. Promisingly, the results indicate both great applicability and efficiency of the proposed system in energy absorption and ductility. Moreover, it was concluded that as the braces and damper are in parallel, the use of a steel ring with smaller size and thickness would result in higher energy absorption and load-resisting capacity when compared to the other existing systems. Finally, to assess the potential of numerically modeling the proposed system, its finite element model was simulated by ABAQUS software and observed that there is a great agreement between the numerical and experimental results.

  • Near infrared spectroscopy techniques were used to study the cure reactions of epoxy resin system based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) resins cured with 4, 4' diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) hardner. Stoichiometric DGEBA/DDS resin formulation was involved in this study. The infrared absorption spectra of the prepared formulation were obtained on an FTIR spectrometer operating in the region of 11000 to 4000$cm^{-l}$. The chemical group peaks of interest in a DFEBA/DDS spectrum were identified by a comparative study with individual spectra of DGEBA and DDS monomers. Where necessary, special model compounds were used to identify unknown bands, such as the primary amine band at 4535$cm^{-l}$. The absorption bands of interest were integrated to quantify the areas and then converted to molar concentrations. This series of quantitative analyses of the major chemical groups led us to understand not only the reaction mechanism but also the cure kinetics. In this paper, the reaction mechanisms observed in stoichiometric DGEBA/DDS resin formulation and the various properties of the resin system as a function of cure temperature are described.

  • Cured epoxy resins are extensively used for the electrical insulation in high-voltage equipments. The bisphenol A-based epoxy resins lured with azine show, especially, good thermal properties and mechanical resistances. For the technical and economic reasons, varing amount of inorganic fillers are added to endow the required special properties. In the large generators and motors of power plants, epoxy insulation is disclosed to the harsh conditions like the superheated steam and abrupt temperature variation. Hygrothermal aging at elevated temperatures tends to induce degradation in epoxy resins. To predict the effect of this degradation in DGEBA/MDA/SN/zeolite system, we proceeded the forced moisture absorption experiment using the autoclave. The thermal properties of the untreated and treated specimens were analyzed by DSC and TGA under the nitrogen flowing condition. The moisture absorption results showed a weight increase during hygrothermal aging at 1207. At the initial aging period, the system leaded to more or less postcuring but more prolonged environmental aging leaded the discoloration of specimen and lowering the T$_{g}$./.

  • In this study a hybrid safety barrier system consisting of steel rail and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) post is considered. W hile CFRP post is selected for impact energy reflection due to its high strength, steel rail is selected for impact energy absorption due to its high ductility. A numerical model considering the elastoplastic behavior of steel is formulated to simulate the dynamic responses of the hybrid system subject to an impact load. A hybrid roadside guard rail system of steel rail and CFRP post is proposed and analyzed with a case study. The numerical model for the hybrid roadside guard rail system is used to find optimized design of the proposed hybrid system.
