  • With the difficulties in increasing the efficiency of conventional crank-driven compressors due to mechanical loss, compressor manufacturers have investigated new kinds of compressor such as a free piston compressor mechanism. This study investigates the energy efficiency of two different types of compressor for a household refrigerator. One is the conventional crank-driven compressor, and the other one is a linear compressor. The energy efficiencies of these compressors are evaluated. Experimental results show that the linear compressor has 10% lower power consumption than the brushless direct-current (BLDC) reciprocating compressor. The linear compressor demonstrates excellent energy efficiency by reducing the friction loss. Furthermore, a motor efficiency exceeding 90% is achieved by using a linear oscillating mechanism with a moving magnet. Additionally, the compressor stroke to piston diameter ratio of the oscillating piston in the linear compressor can be adjusted in order to modulate the cooling capacity of the compressor for improved system efficiency.

  • A study to improve the accuracy of a map-based compressor model with experiment was performed. Corrections on the effects of suction gas superheat and heat leakage from a compressor shell are required to apply the compressor amp model based on the empirical performance data(map) of compressor manufacturers to the actual system. So experiments to assess the effects of superheat and hat leakage were performed and the corrected equations were made. Compressors and refrigerant used in the experiment were the high pressure type rotary compressor and R-22, experiments were performed by compressor calorimeter. From the experiment, a volumetric efficiency correction factor$(F_ν)$ showed the value of 0.77, slightly higher than 0.75 proposed by Dabiri and Rice for low pressure type reciprocating compressor, and the heat leakage from the compressor shell turned out to be a factor that influenced the discharged mass flow rate. The relation between heat leakage of compressor shell and the variation of discharged mass flow rate from compressor was considered in compressor map modeling as an empirical function. With this function, the prediction accuracy of compressor model in system conditions was improved.

  • Numerical performance analysis of the vane-roller integral type swing compressor was conducted. The swing compressor has been investigated for the highly efficient air conditioning system. Performance analysis results of the swing compressor were compared with those of a conventional rotary compressor. Mechanical and gas losses of a swing compressor were larger than those of a rotary compressor. However in case of mass flow rate from the discharge port, the swing compressor was about 6.68% higher than the rotary compressor. Hence the EER, the cooling capacity and the compressor work of the swing compressor were about 3.71%, 6.69% and 2.90% higher than the rotary compressor respectively.

  • Vibration and Noise of air conditioner are entirely determined by compressor vibration. Compressor vibration transmitted to the enclosure of air conditioner or pipes connected compressor with heat exchanger. Enclosure generate(noise and vibration. Therefore, the analysis of compressor vibration analysis is considered significant technical issue. For the reduction of vibration of compressor, it is necessary to grasp correctly vibration transmission paths and excitation sources in the compressor shell. Because, shell ( Surface of compressor ) shows whole vibration characteristic of compressor mechanism. In this paper, vibration intensity was applied to measure vibration energy flow on the shell .From this technique, it is possible to catch the path of vibration propagation along the one cycle and the location of vibration energy sources may change with time on the shell.

  • An efficiency of a refrigeration cycle and a reliability of a compressor can be reduced if a refrigerant including excessive lubricating oil is exhausted from the compressor. Thus, the analysis of the oil behavior inside the compressor is required to prevent the problem. A tested rotary compressor with visualization windows has been manufactured. in this study to investigate the oil behavior using developed visualization techniques. The oil behaviors at various operating conditions have been quantified to obtain the relationship with the outlet pressure inside the compressor. Also, the effect of the operating conditions on the quantity of the exhausted oil from the rotary compressor has been investigated using a manufactured test model.

  • In this paper, we propose a high speed parallel multiplier with a hierarchical architecture using a fast 4-2 compressor and 6-2 compressor. Generally, the performance of parallel multiplier depends on the processing speed of partial products summation tree with CSA adder. In this paper we propose a new circuit of 4-2 compressor and 6-2 compressor which reduces the propagation delay time, compared with conventional one. We Propose a hierarchical multiplier architecture in order to improve the execution speed of 16$\times$16 parallel multiplier using proposed compressors in this paper and make layout design easily by regular structure. The propagation delay time of the proposed 4-2 compressor circuit was 14% reduced as a result of SPICE simulation, compared with the conventional 4-2 compressor. The total propagation delay time of proposed 16$\times$16 parallel multiplier was 12% reduced using proposed 4-2 compressor and 6-2 compressor.

  • Various efforts have been initiated to reduce the energy consumption of the compressor as it is one of the approaches to saving a large portion of the fixed cost of the production site. Various results of reducing the energy consumption of the compressor have been reported, but to reduce the energy consumption of the compressors fundamentally, regular management of the compressor should ensure optimum operation. This requires periodic on-site visits by experts, but is often overlooked as a cost issue, resulting in the use of the compressor in low-efficiency conditions. Thus, it is necessary to develop a low-cost evaluation technology for compressor condition monitoring and efficiency analysis to ensure that the compressor is always driven at the optimum efficiency without imposing undue burden on the compressor user. In this study, a sensor was installed at the inlet, outlet, and power supply of the compressor, and a method for evaluating the energy consumption of the compressor using the minimum sensor was derived. The experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed method. It was confirmed that the energy consumption of the compressor can be easily as well as efficiently evaluated by using the method developed in this study.

  • The major source of noise in air-conditioner is a compressor. Therefore, noise reduction in a compressor is quite significant as an element technology in air-conditioner field. Recently, a scroll compressor is widely used, because a scroll compressor features lower noise, due to less pulsation of gas pressure, than that of the rotary compressor. During a past noise reduction effort on a scroll compressor, noise radiation from the discharge portion of the hermetic shell was identified as the major contributor to overall noise. For a reduction of noise, the source of noise at the discharge portion must be identified. This paper presents detailed analyzes for the discharge pressure pulsation and cavity resonance at discharge space, which will make possible a low noise design of a scroll compressor.

  • This study presents an aerodynamic design and an experimental performance test of a turbo air compressor consisted of mixed-flow impeller and curved diffuser for the PEM fuel cell vehicle application. Many studies compare the efficiency, cost or noise level of high-pressure and low-pressure operation of PEM fuel cell systems. Pressure ratio 2.2:1 is considered as design target The goal of compressor design is to enlarge the flow margin of compressor from surge to choke mass flow rate to cover the operational envelope of FCV. Large-scale rig test is performed to evaluate the compressor performance and to compare the effects of compressor exit pipe volume to stall or surge characteristics. The results show that the mixed-flow compressor designed has large flow margin, and the flow margin of compressor configuration with small exit volume is larger than that with large exit volume.

  • Reducing the losses of the tip clearance flow is one of the keys in an unshrouded centrifugal compressor design and development because tip clearances are large in relation to the span of the blades and also centrifugal compressors produce a sufficiently large pressure rise in single stage. This problem is more acute for a low flow high-pressure ratio impeller design. The large tip clearance would cause flow separations, and as a result it would drop both the efficiency and surge margin. Thus a design of a high efficiency and wide operation range low flow coefficient centrifugal compressor is a great challenge. This paper describes a recent development of high efficiency and wide surge margin low flow coefficient centrifugal compressor. A viscous turbomachinery optimal design method developed by the authors for axial flow machine was further extended and used in the centrifugal compressor design. The compressor has three main parts: impeller, a low solidity diffuser and volute. The tip clearance is under a special consideration in this design to allow impeller insensitiveness to the clearance. A patented three-dimensional low solidity diffuser design method is used and applied to this design. The compressor test results demonstrated to be successful to extend the low solidity diffusers to high-pressure ratio compressor. The compressor stage performance showed the total to static efficiency of the compressor being about 85% and stability range over 35%. The test results are in good agreement with the design.
