  • A cleaner has trouble with too much noise and power consumption. To solve these problems, the investigation for motors, which are the main component of vacuum cleaner, is required. However, it is difficult to analyze the flow by the experimental means because of the high speed of the fan rotation ranging from 30,000 rpm to 50,000 rpm. Moreover it takes much time to perform the numerical simulation for the flow. In this research, it is aimed to analyse the flow through the centrifugal fan which is believed to be a main noise source, by the computational method. The efficiency of the centrifugal fan is affected by friction loss, shock loss and so on. Those losses depend on factors like the velocity of impeller, blade shape and etc. Accordingly, the influence of the shape of impeller on the flow is investigated in this study. The computational analysis was done by changing impeller shapes. The flow around the centrifugal fan is simulated by applying the moving mesh. To verify the validity of the computation results, the air flow rate and the pressure field to the cleaner is compared with the experimental data. All simulations are performed by using commercial code SC/Tetra. The calculated results show good agreement with the experimental ones qualitatively and it is believed to be promising to use computational simulation in the improvement of the vacuum cleaner performance.

  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was introduced to investigate the flow field improvement of an indoor RAC chassis consisting of a rear-guider, a stabilizer and a cross-flow fan. This unsteady three-dimensional numerical analysis was carried out by the commercial SC/Tetra software. The edge blocks were adopted in this study as a tool for the flow field improvement of an indoor RAC. In view of the results so far achieved, the edge blocks cause the center of an eccentric vortex to be stable along all length of a cross-flow fan, and then, the static pressure and the velocity vector show a stable distributions. In consequence, because the edge blocks eliminate a reverse flow near the edges, an exhausting flow becomes to be stable and uniform.

  • The present study aims to investigate quantitatively the hydrodynamic effect on combustion process of pulverized coal particles in large scale combustion chamber using computational analysis, with a general purpose computational fluid dynamics code. Burner hydrodynamics include swirl and turbulence intensity from the burner. To understand the phenomena which are difficult to observe how flow has influence on the combustion process, comparative effect of combustion related coal properties and hydrodynamics is evaluated on flame formation and development in burner flames.

  • Regarding the aircrafts with a rotor blade system, the miniaturization of them is limited due to the rotor blade length and the tail rotor system. To miniaturize an aircraft, an equipment is required that increases thrust and also shortens the length of the rotor blade. The present study will conduct the flow analysis for miniaturizing the aircraft by applying a duct to the coaxial rotor blade system without tail rotor. First, the verification on the calculated results was conducted through the computational flow analysis on the coaxial rotor blade system without a duct. Then, the flow analysis for the coaxial rotor blade systems was performed including Ka-60 duct, Single duct, Twin duct, and Double duct, respectively. From the numerical results, the thrust coefficient appeared higher with the duct than without a duct for the coaxial rotor blade system. Especially, in the case of Double duct, the thrust was improved due to the increase of incoming flow and the extension of the wake area. These results will be used as the basic concepts for miniaturizing the aircraft with the rotor blade system. The flow analysis on the coaxial rotor blade system including the fuselage remains as a future work.

  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a sirocco fan under the maximum flowrate condition. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used for this unsteady and three-dimensional numerical analysis. In consequence, because a flow is unstable within the range of about 50% of a housing depth from a bellmouth around the cutoff region, the passing flow through the blade cascade occurred on the X-Y plane is a slow or a reverse with approaching to the housing inlet. Also, the secondary flow shows on the radial plane of a housing, and its vortex center exists within about 33% of a housing depth from a bellmouth except the cutoff region. Moreover, the flow occurring on the exit plane of a sirocco fan shows a complex secondary flow.

  • The blood flow characteristics have been closely related to various cardiovascular diseases, it is very important to predict them accurate enough in an efficient way. Thus, this paper proposes a one-dimensional spectral element model for the blood flow through blood vessels. The spectral element model is formulated by using the variational method. The nonlinear terms in spectral element model are all treated as the pseudo-force and an iterative solution method is applied in the frequency domain.

  • The computational efficiency of flow simulations with Multi-resolution analysis (MRA) was enhanced via the boundary treatment of the computational domain. In MRA, an adaptive dataset to a solution is constructed through data decomposition with interpolating polynomial and thresholding. During the decomposition process, the basis points of interpolation should exceed the boundary of the computational domain. In order to resolve this problem, the weight coefficients of interpolating polynomial were adjusted near the boundaries. By this boundary treatment, the computational efficiency of MRA was enhanced while the numerical accuracy of a solution was unchanged. This modified MRA was applied to two-dimensional steady Euler equations and the enhancement of computational efficiency and the maintenance of numerical accuracy were assessed.
